PHILADELPHIA, Pa (January 14, 2010) - With the 2010 Major League Soccer SuperDraft looming, Philadelphia Union continue to maneuver, making their second deal in as many days. The MLS expansion club announced that it has sent allocation money to FC Dallas in exchange for the #6 overall pick in today’s SuperDraft. Late last night, the club dealt its #1 spot in the allocation rankings to D.C. United for allocation money, Brazilian midfielder Fred and the #7 overall pick in today’s SuperDraft.
“These deals enable us to continue to shape our team to compete both now and in the future,” said Team Manager Peter Nowak. “But we still have a lot of work to do. The opportunity to move up again and select another player who we believe might help us build our foundation was a chance well worth taking.”
With this latest move, Philadelphia Union now have three of the first seven picks in the SuperDraft for collegiate players, with perhaps the best crop of young athletes ever to choose from.
“Conditions were not ideal at the combine in Florida last week, but Peter and his technical staff saw some things and some people that they targeted,” said Philadelphia Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “From that point on, we listened to others and have now made a couple deals that will give us a running start in establishing the kind of team and organization that gives maximum effort every time out on the pitch. That’s what our supporters want and deserve.”
The addition of Fred immediately gives Philadelphia Union an experienced midfielder to trigger the offensive attack.
“Fred is a quality footballer, with an attacking mentality and we took the opportunity to not only acquire him, but add the #7 pick overall plus valuable cash,” said Philadelphia Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “That will give us the opportunity to add even more players to further enhance our expanding roster.”
In three full seasons with D.C. United, Fred made 60 starts, played in 72 games and had 11 goals and 16 assists. His best season came in 2007, when he notched seven goals and seven assists.
