Well, for one thing, you're counting their "Guaranteed Compensation" as their salary, which is not the case. Only the base salary counts toward the cap.

I count their team salary at $2,585,501.50

Yeah Edu and Wynne for some reason only have a base of like 50k even though they're guarenteed to make 150k

The "base vs guarantee" issue, there are a number of people on here who swear that only base counts, but I can't find that anywhere and it doesn't seem to make sense. If that were the way it worked, why would every team pay all it's players' some miniscule base, and make 99% of the pay "guaranteed". It would make the cap a farce.

Steve Goff of the Washington Post said not to take any of those numbers as the true amount against the cap. There are calculations done behind the scenes that we don't know about that modify those numbers for cap purposes. I've basically given up on calculating a cap number.

They can't do that for the simple fact that all contracts are with MLS and have to be approved by the MLS FO.

There's only two types of pay in life - that which an employer is contractually obligated to pay, and that which is contigent (ie based on achieving some objective, or at mgmt discretion)

According to the union:

In the survey, all player salaries are broken down into two numbers. The first is the player's current base salary. The second is characterized as annual average guaranteed compensation. The annual average guaranteed compensation number includes a player's base salary and all signing and guaranteed bonuses annualized over the term of the player's contract, including option years.

So the difference is a bonus divided over the years of the contract. But if the player is released before the end of the contract, they've essentially lost a portion of their bonus that was spread out over the years of the deal.

It's definitely true that the first number is not guaranteed to be the number that applies to the cap. Since teams pay down some of their contracts with allocation, they could choose to pay down any portion of the compensation in that way. This report is simply the details the union has on how much somebody is paid and not the internal details of cap management by the league. I doubt the league would even want the union to know how they use allocations to offset things.

It could be because Base isn't guarenteed like if we release a player they keep the bonuses but not the base salary?
