Whitecaps to sponsor a tier 2 team in the new NASL II. They are not financing the team, however. It will be a feeder team for the Whitecaps.

A new Edmonton professional soccer team will emerge from the wake of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The team, Sun Media has learned, will play as the second coming of the Edmonton Drillers in the second coming of the North American Soccer League.
The Whitecaps will join Toronto F.C. in Major League Soccer in 2011. And an Edmonton team, it is expected to be announced within days, has been granted a franchise to replace the Whitecaps in the freshly-named NASL founded by teams breaking away from the USL including the Whitecaps and the Montreal Impact.
The Edmonton team will join the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Crystal Palace Baltimore, Miami F.C., Altlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, Minnesota Thunder, St. Louis Soccer United and Montreal in the league which will begin play in April with Vancouver involved for just the one season before Edmonton replaces the Whitecaps franchise.
When the Whitecaps were accepted to join Major League Soccer for the 2011 season, team president Bob Lenarduzzi said he believed the club needed to put together a pro development team and suggested Edmonton as the most obvious place to put it.

Congrats Edmonton. Hope they don't spend too long down there. They have supported Canada well and deserve a good team.

I think Canada could easily support 5 healthy MLS franchises in T.O., Vancouver, Montreal, Edmonton, and Calgary...

I dunno ...
if edmonton is suppose to be the 'feeder' team to the Caps then wouldn't be conflict of interest or something?

Edmonton had over 10K average attendance most years of the old NASL. It should make a good tier 2 market. It's a little too early to place it into MLS when places like St. Louis don't yet have an MLS team.

Good point. Should eliminate some of the problems with having a 3 team round-robin.

If Ottawa ends up in USL-1, then we'll have 5 potential teams.

My life would just not be the same without these links. SSG would turn heads walking into a room....but then they'd just turn back. Co-ed 1 is gorgeous. Co-ed 2 has some serious skills, yaaay Toronto girl.

It would be much harder for FIFA to throw games if they had video replay, so I dont see them ever getting video replay
