Yeah, I have no problem admitting that Drew Carey strikes me as the sort of owner all supporters are going to wish for. The guy is asking all the questions we've knocked about here on the boards for years now and he definitely gives off the vibe as a guy who "gets it". I certainly don't want to deride MLSE, but let's face the fact that whereas the Sounders are an intregal part of the consortium of Roth, Hanauer, Allen, and Carey; we're likely to remain an afterthought in the minds of our owners behind the Maple Leafs and Raptors.

Don't take offence, Paul, I think it's just the reality.

Anyways, Drew has brought up some great points and has made some pretty good suggestions, many of which have been mentioned on these very boards in the past. I certainly hope some of our thoughts and ideas will now garner the attention they deserve now that one of the MLS owners himself as made his feeling very pronounced at the Supporters Summit.

Agreed, and they did not broadcast the session after lunch, which is by MLS Disciplinary Committee on officiating. They have CSA's Joe Gaston and US Soccer's whatever the dude's name is answer SG's questions on the horrid MLS ref.

I'm trying to get a hold of a copy of their PowerPoint.

Basically if you guys remember, SJ's back up GK gave NEE 2 mid fingers at BMO. They suspended the kid and fined him after the fact.

MLS does not own any referees, it has to come from the federation level (US Soccer and CSA), there are only 4 full time refree in entire US Soccer. Everyone else is part time.

Wrongfully issued yellow/red cards will not be revoked per FIFA dictation. However, in the most recent transmission, leniency can be applied to flagrant wrong carding IF the suspension is 2 games or longer. Therefore, due to current MLS carding system. 1 game suspension for Red, 5 yellow accumulation for 1 game (Actually, 6 yellow cards, since when player receives 4 yellow, he receives notification, and will have 1 yellow card removed if he does not get yellow in the next three games), no wrong calls will be rectified because it was already too liberal. FIFA will allow the federation US Soccer + CSA to rectify wrongly issued cards if and only if MLS increase the duration of red card suspensions to at least 2 games and yellow cards accumulation in similar fashion.

Drew makes an interesting point about teaming up with a travel agency or creating their own travel agency to make it cheap for supporters to travel.

We suggested this to TFC in year one and they nixed the idea saying that there would be too much liability for them and not enough return (i.e. they don't make money from away games).

That's a fair comment. Why open themselves up to a lawsuit. I think the best way to go would certainly be for MLS to strike a deal with a specific airline for cheap airfare for those who have purchased tickets to away games.

The other point to consider is that Expedia.ca is a TFC corporate sponsor. So they would have to use them for travel. Such is the way of commerce. And, of course, Expedia would have to be willing to give discounts. Given the size and complexity of a web based B2B travel model that is nearly completely disintermediated, we don't represent a large enough opportunity for them - I can't see how this could fly.

I think that we will be left to our own device for the foreseable future.

Good man... Thanks :)

also, more sensitive questions are answered in the afternoon session

they do not have direct financial support to us soccer or special deals or the other way around

however, they do have both us soccer and csa senior folks on site as the plan to develop soccer in both countries is to officially create something that's lacking, a working academy system where players from age 5 and up can be developed and retained,

they blasted that NCAA is killing soccer player's talents by making them into good athletes but horrible soccer players (lack of game time, 3 months playing a year, 9 month to be wasted on chicks and booze etc). however, given NCAA is the mafia boss with both money and dictatorial power, they can't influence them at all.

therefore reserve league is back! if not 2010, 2011 season. the reason they scraped it is due to only 3-4 teams are making money and most can't afford a reserve team and their traveling and game cost (extended stadium rentals, staff on site etc). they may need to work the reserve league in regional basis to get deeper bench and have them match fit

TFC has a head start of both academy teams, other teams will follow soon, as an attempt to create alternative avenue for player development in both countries (Vancouver and eventually Montreal, according to CSA)

Also good to know.. I found it off that the grass roots funding was not addressed during the feed. To me, it should be priority number 1 if we want to grow the league using homegrown talent with a little international flavor to taste..

You might be right Mike, if we consider the aggregate for all their teams. Then again, it may still be too small for MLSE to care.

I have always found it interesting how companies try to stick to their core competencies to find new revenue/profit opportunities. For instance, MLSE diversified their holdings in recent years....some make sense. Others - less so.

From the TFC website....

MLSE has expanded its sports and entertainment brand reach through many city and community building projects and initiatives including the Maple Leaf Square development, a vibrant landmark that will be situated next to Air Canada Centre and includes a boutique hotel, condominium towers, restaurant and extensive retail offerings; a new 20,000 seat National Soccer Stadium on the grounds of Exhibition Place and the Oshawa Sports and Entertainment Complex that will become the new home to the OHL's Oshawa Generals.

I understand that Anselmi's background is in venues management which helps explain the Oshawa play.

But a condominium development? Boutique hotel? Because they own prime real estate? Talk about stepping outside your comfort zone. Makes one think that they must have partnered up with an entity that knows that line of business.

In any case, it will be a great watch - once the dust settles.

It's still a very good idea and I hope that the RPB leadership will continue to push the argument in the future when dealing with the club. Yes, there are some good reasons for the club to back away from the business of away game transportation and accommodations, but I personally think there is a lot of opportunity to make some good coin from away game trippers.

Think about it this way: Would we or would we not enjoy larger away trip numbers if we had one group (and I don't mean an SG) offering a package deal that included tickets, transport, and hotel room instead of multiple groups organizing things separately? Let's remember the trip the club organized to Columbus in 2008 and the thousands of fans we got out to that match.

BTW, I don't want to disparage the great crew we have working on the road trips already. I know how incredibly difficult it can be to organize these sorts of things and what sort of effort goes into making sure a trip is pulled off smoothly.

billyfly
11-24-2009, 12:20 AM
They spoke about away fans but did not really speak about how TFC essentially created the large traveling support. (Yes I like pats on the back and recognition) Were not our numbers unprecedented?

DOMIN8R
11-24-2009, 10:03 AM
The more I think about this, the more I think that MLSE should at least look at this. Not as a money making venture but more as revenue neutral, relationship with supporters enhancing opportunity and to demonstrate that they are willing to work with SGs to support the team when they play away.

Carey said the Sounders will consider working with their own travel agency to make it easier and more affordable for Seattle supporters to travel to away games. He also said when Vancouver and Portland join MLS in 2011, Seattle should consider buying a large number of season tickets in those stadiums and sell them to their own supporters to ensure they have a large contingent of Sounders fans in great locations.
