A new league set to rival USL I that looks as if it become a recognised tier II (perhaps pushing USL I down to tier III) could be a link between USL and MLS that might lead to promotion/relegation...

Please no system where all they have to do is avoid the last two places to call the year a "success."

Relegation battles can be most invigorating. Plus, survival in the top flight means greater revenues (mostly) and can be quite rewarding. For a newly promoted side survival can be regarded as success, not so much for established sides.

Yeah, I get that (though I don't really see why a relegation battle is any more exciting than fighting for a playoff spot - it still comes down to that 'must-win' game at the end of the season) but given the history of MLSE I think we would quickly end up with a team that's safely in the middle of the table, year after year. This is, after all, an organization that looks at the minimum requirement for "success," rather than aiming for the very top.

At least with this system we have a chance to get into the playoffs and make a run to the Cup.

I think it would just put teams out of business in the US/Canada. The revenues are so great in terms of sponsorship/crowds/etc that putting 50million up to join the league then being relegated here would be catastrophic.

but isn't it just "PHEW, WE SURVIVED RELEGATION!"?
I mean, it's a positive, but it's a negative too, cuz you almost got sent down.

Playoffs are more like "WOW! WE MADE THE PLAYOFFS!!! A CHANCE AT MLS CUP!!"

I'll take the latter.......

exactly...new owners would not want to be relegated after investing heavily in franchise, stadiums etc. what could happen in a mls 2 where
it could be a feeder league for mls, and could take part in a mls league cup format with current mls teams, that way mls could get rid of the superliga..the winner of MLS 2 could get a appearence in the qualifying rounds of the concacaf champions league?

Man, all this talk about 7 or so USL teams pulling out and forming their own entity is just crazy. Firstly, how would this even benefit Vancouver if they are gonna be playing in MLS for 2011? They'd be taking part in the formation of an entirely new league that they, by all accounts, will be in competition with a year later? Doesn't add up to me. Would that be why Portland is staying put for the moment?

And what the fuck is going on with Montreal? I just want someone from the organization to come right out and say whether or not they are interested in playing in MLS.

I don't want to sound cynical, but this whole deal sounds rotten.

Indications are that due to MLS restrictions on academy players, Vancouver is planning to continue to field a team in the second division (USL-1, or the new division 2 league). That way, they can further develop players that they can later move to the MLS first team.
