Keep in mind that Yallop is also the most well known (to soccercentral viewers) on the list.

If TFC hires Yallop, we're sunk.

^^no way...Nicol's record is far better and over a longer period. Plus, Preki has personality problems.

Do elaborate.

From my POV both do extremely well in teams where they get poor support from management.

Difference being New England plays effective, but perhaps the most un-attractive football in the entire league.

+1

Preki would be better fit for TFC Locker room with bad apples, and Chivas is playing much more attractive soccer than NER.

i've never really thought New England played unattractive football (as opposed to TFC, letsay).

they have a bit of a rag tag crew at times (like Wells Thompson), and some of them aren't particularly talented, but Nicol seems to get the best out of what he's got.

also, Sigi Schmidt was fired from LA years ago for playing a boring style even though he did well in the standings. Seattle doesn't play a boring style. So he changed based on his players' abilities.

My point is that I think as a coach you have to work with what you got. If you don't have DP or necessarily high priced/high talent players, maybe you have to play "unattractive football" to win games. It's funny that DC's boss complained about other teams not playing attractive football. He named RSL as one... but RSL looked fine to me in the two playoff games against Columbass. And there's no point playing attractive run and gun football if you keep losing.

That said, I've never been bored watching Nicol's teams. They certainly play a crisper, more fundamental game than TFC does. Preki's teams have good fundamentals.... although Chivas had a lot of trouble scoring this season.. went on a run there with not many goals.

Some very good points, Rocker.

As someone who'se coached myself (at an amateur level), you do indeed modify your strategy based on the team that you have. My teams looked very different over the years.

I remember coaching an indoor team that had a few amazing players. They had a really good understanding of each other, were anchored by a great striker, and had wonderful positioning ability. So what did I do? Mostly stepped out of the way and let them develop a "total football" style of play. They won the table that season. Other years, I've had to do a lot of intensive coaching on positioning with not-so-talented players just so they could play a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Sometimes my main strategy has been "damage control." So it all depends.

100% CORRECT...

That goes for the coach, and for the GM as well...

A GM builds around his strengths and uses them to make the overall product better...

The coach sets up his system and style of play based on the players and strengths he has...

I just would like to see the fundamental play that we see with Nicol, Preki, Kinnear, Arena, and Schmidt's teams. I don't care if that's boring or attractive. Schmidt's team this year didn't score a lot actually (goals are attractive, right?) but I did like watching their style because they did the little things correctly.... obviously when in positions to suceed they shot the ball over the net or whatever (Sigi probably can't coach that). Jacqua and Zakuani were particularly suspect -- the team would get them into positions to score but they'd often fail.

But all three TFC coaches never seemed to stress those fundamentals that would at least put players in those positions to succeed or fail.. it was just a bunch of individuals out there. But no smart passes, no running off the ball, etc. I don't think that comes from the players Mo chose. For example, De Ro worked GREAT in Kinnear's system... Guevara fits so nicely into Honduras's fundamental play.... but on TFC they look like a bunch of individuals out there with no sense of the basics. It can't be the players' fault completely, can it?

In terms of coaches, I'd have to place them in the following order of preference:

1. Nicol
T2. Soehn
T2. Preki
3. Hart
4. Williams (interim at RBNY)
5. Spencer (assistant at Houston)
6. Yallop

Here are my explanations for my ranking:

- Nicol has a good, prolonged track record
- Preki does as well but over less time and he might still have a grudge against Guevara
- Hart has proven what he can do with the CMNT (but doesn't have MLS experience)
- Williams has done a great job at New York and the team was playing very well since he took over (but I'm less enthused about repeating the assistant-becomes-coach-for-the-first-time)
- Spencer is another like Williams but has been on a very successful team lately so he'll know that's needed to win. But can he do it as a head coach?
- It seems people like Yallop just because he's Canadian. I haven't seen anything from him lately that suggests he's good at his job.

Keep Hart away from TFC...we need him for the CMNT
