I couldn't find this posted but a hotel on the exhibition grounds (south of the Direct Energy Center and beside the Automotive building) is close to approval, which would cut down on availble parking aroudn BMO

It has been posted before. Its been talked about since 2007 (?)

If its close to happening then it will change the area around BMO for sure.

the hotel is going to be on the east side of the Direct Energy Center (near the Automotive building) so parking shouldn't be cut down too much. It's about as far from BMO as you can get while still being on the CNE grounds.

But yes, good find.

And now it will be easy to find the visiting players!!!

I thought it already was approved?

A proposal for a 26-storey boutique hotel on the grounds of Exhibition Place has received unanimous approval from the board of governors of the city agency.
At a special meeting on Thursday night, the Exhibition Place board voted 8-0 for plans by HK Hotel of New York for a 320-room glass tower to open in 2013. It will be on a site a few steps south of the Direct Energy Centre and adjacent to the new Allstream Centre.
The proposal goes to city council for approval in December.
"The ambience for this project is more favourable than it has ever been," said Joe Pantalone, agency chairman and deputy mayor. He cited increased activity at Exhibition Place and growth in residential development nearby.
Three previous attempts to build a hotel at Exhibition Place fell by the wayside.

Nevermind.. city council still...

Most likely... but it's a higher end Hotel... so expect it to be pricey. It WILL NOT have a Casino as originally planned in the first few attempts.

If they build a hotel perhaps they will build a large # of underground parking spots.

The Professor

One key sticking point on this project getting off the ground will be the cost of the heritage preservation and display. The proposal promises the moon and the stars, but do they really know what they're getting into? Will they put up with the delays caused by proper digs? The costs of creating and maintaining a mini-museum? etc. etc.

This is a pretty important heritage location (currently preserved - in typical Toronto style - by a layer of pavement). If it's not done right, a fresh layer of pavement for continued parking would be the better approach.

Agreed, but from the renderings that mini museum would be fucking sick!

Sure, parking spots might be sacrificed, but we have GO and the TTC! Accessibility wise, BMO Field fairs quite well, when we compare it to Chicago and Dallas...

Would the hotel not have a parking garage? If so, in theory, there could be more spaces... it would take 24 hours to exit but at least you'd have a space.

Already answered. They propose +/- 400 spots in an underground garage.

We'll rent a suite and pile fifteen 75MBs in there, very nice.

Sweet - bring on the bar. Better choice of beer, spirit based drinks also available for post game celebrations (once a season only) and no matter what the prices, it's unlikely to be much worse than BMO prices. Plus, you don;t get wet when it rains.

What do you reckon an upmarket hotel bar would make of 150 TFC fans decked in shirts and scarves all singing out loud together (on the count of three...)

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, THE RED BULLLLLS.....

Of course they know what they are getting into, i have worked for the ex, on and off for the past 4 years, and they are pretty adamant about the hotel, it will generate $ and create jobs.

LOL they can't put another layer of ashpalt down, without grinding it out first, and fixing/rebuilding catch basins most of the catch basins, need to be rebuilt, as some are over 40 yrs old, and in time one by one they will get done.

its only a matter of time before Condos get closer and closer to the ex grounds, you can see Condos slowly making there way along near the lakeshore.

I don't understand why every building has to be made of glass.

As was said in the Urban Toronto thread the City needs to keep this open space b/c it will be much more valuable (to the community not$$$) as time goes on and the condos and housing keeps coming.
