Perhaps I'm missing something: shouldn't Dallas have the final playoff spot at the moment? (Level on points but a GD of 4 as opposed to our -4)

That, and they took the season series against us.

Somebody please explain.

This plot makes no sense! Tell the people!

Dallas would technically have it...if TFC and Dallas were the only 2 teams tied.....The reason why TFC holds the spot is because of the 4 teams tied on 39 points.....I believe that TFC hold the best overall record against the other 3 teams....or something to that effect. :)

I understood it better after these guys explained it:

Hmm, I was in Koryo's boat, but this makes sense. As much as I believe head-to-head records being tie-breakers is the most fair, goal differential is just so much easier for scenarios like these.

Don't quote me on this.....I am only repeating what I think I heard someone tell me....:)

I'd love to see MLS adopt the MLB playoff tiebreaker...

If you're tied at the end of the season, and 1-game, winner gets into the playoffs...

If there was 3-4-5 teams tied, you'd need some annoying tie-breakers (goal diff etc) to narrow it down to 2-teams - but it would be worth it...

1-game playoffs are awesome... In baseball, they're better than a game-7 as they are a game-163...

And MLS teams might want it for the gate revenue (although I realise playoff attendance sometimes actually falls off from reg season due to lack of time to promote)...

Have the season end on Saturday - with the 1-game playoff being on ESPN that Wednesday... The team that wins, heads to playoffs that Saturday (short week, little rest, but that's what happens)...

Carts...

I think goal differential can only truly work when you play a balanced schedule. Since MLS doesn't play a balanced schedule at the moment, you can't depend on that as a tie-breaker.

1 game play off ,and who would be a home team in that case?
I think as it is right now is the best way to deal with it,head to head .

No one has worked out the permutations of these scenarios:

Dallas, New England, DCUtd., and Toronto all win, Chicago loses and we have five teams tied at 42 points.

Or we have Salt Lake winning and Dallas, New England, DC Utd., and Toronto all tieing their final games to bring these teams level with Colorado at 40 points in another five-way tie.

Luke Wileman, be a good chap and add this to your TFC playoff picture page. Please.

From soccer by Ives site....

TFC currently holds the tie-breaker among the four teams tied, based on its 2-1-3 record against the other teams tied on 39 points. New England and FC Dallas are tied with 2-2-2 records vs. the other 39-point teams. D.C. United is in last among the tied teams, with a 1-2-3 record. The only team D.C. United holds a tie-breaker on is FC Dallas, while FC Dallas only holds a tie-breaker on Toronto FC.

DC are the worst of the tied teams, but they hold the tie-breaker vs. the team ahead of them - FC Dallas. We're in first place, but FC Dallas has the tie-breaker against us. So, the worst team would win out vs. Dallas, but the top place team wouldn't. Only in the MLS :D

Thanks everyone for clearing up the scenario :)

I'll just stick to the "we need to win and Colorado&Dallas need to lose/draw" thing. It hurts less.
