I think they will be able to... especially considering how nice it is.

Remember back when the SkyDome was the "cool" place to be?

The Skydome is downtown Toronto right next to the (then) world's tallest freestanding structure.... not in jersey.

It still looks like a cool place to watch a match, but is it really only 25,000 seats?

That's the thing too. 25,000 people is easier to fill than 75,000.

I guarantee if TFC played out of Giants Stadium... it would be getting the same type of crowds even if Giants Stadium was in downtown Toronto.

see Montreal Alouettes - Molson Stadium vs. Olympic Stadium, concept, same.

why not for for like .... (pulling a compromise number out of a hat here)... 35,000.

That way they can also host friendlies without having to charge people twice (see Real Madrid in Toronto)

I appreciate that it's a soccer specific stadium, but I with they'd think just a big bigger. It's New York after all!

i dont think they'll fill it regularly unless travelling fans come out in numbers.

LA doesn't always fill the Home Depot Center.. so no reason 25000 are gonna schlep out to the swamps to watch the New Jersey Shite Bulls. I could see them getting 17-20K on average though, and perhaps 25K for TFC, DC, Philly games.... With those easy/cheap Porter Airlines flights to the airport right near the stadium, this would be an easy trip for the TFC fan.

but you can bet that their friendlies could sell out 40,000+

I agree. You'd think they would at least have made it 30,000 like HDC. I suppose the argument is that if you have a big event that requires hosting a lot of people you can still use the Meadowlands.

Should be a fun road trip. As much as I hate the New Jersey Aluminum Cans, it's shaping up to be a nice stadium.

And stadiums like this just help lend legitimacy to the whole league. I hope to see more.

25,000 seats is perfect. 30,000 would be alot harder to sell out tickets on a reguler basis. Sure they could sell out tickets for any friendlies or in big matches like playoffs or vs rival teams but i bet the average game it would be hard to keep selling 30,000 seats every game. They want this stadium to be as full as possbile like in Europe, they want this stadium to look European and feal European you could bet on that and wIth 25,000 seats they can keep demand high and availability lower, making it the place to be.

james

any team in MLS can sell out 40,000+ when you are playing big clubs like Real Madrid Chelsea!

That stadium is awsome and i hope to go next season. But im not sure if we could ever get as big travelling numbers as we had in Columbus, flying to New York still iquite a bit more exspensive then going to Columbus. Though if we ever got 1,000-2,000 New York that stdaim noise would be rocking, would be madness!!

People havent really said anything about Madejeski Stadium because its all the way in England and most people here will never go visit this stadium where as Red Bull Arena is a very doable away trip and it is the first type of European stadium built in America. Red Bull Arena really adds creadability to the league and the Red Bull Club. Where as Madejeski stadium is in Europe where there is lots of stadiums like this built all over Europe.

I really don't think 30,000 seats would be that bad because if the stadium is a great enviroment, people will want to start going, I really don't think you can use their current attedance at Giants Stadium too much, because it really does suck watching a game there with say 8,000-10,000 in the house. I mean if TFC was at the Rogers Centre do you think they would get 20,000 a game like they do now, or even 25,000 if you consider how many people are on the waiting list.

Red Bull Arena is going to be the crown jewl of the MLS, it is going to be amazing to see next year when the Reds going marching in and still prove New York is shite.

I was in New York & Newark over the weekend and passed by the new stadium. It's on the PATH train (as mentioned in the article), not out in the swamp. That means very frequent, 24/7 access from a bunch of locations in Manhattan (20 min travel time), as well as Newark & Hoboken, & cheap ($1.75/trip). The WTC PATH station is open again, although still temporary at the moment.

Getting there from Newark airport will be easy. From Laguardia & JFK, you're dealing with the regular airport access problems in New York, but they couldn't have done much better.

This could be part of a great weekend trip to NY. Some guys I met from NY & NJ mentioned it's a short walk from a neighbourhood with good bars etc. Only issue, this is supposed to be the centrepiece of a major redevelopment of former industrial lands. Due to the economic crash, the rest of the development will take a while -- and it does look post-WWIII in the vicinity. However, I'm sure they will tear down more of the rusty factory remnants soon, so at least the area will just be wide open in the meantime. (Lots has already been torn down in the last few years.)

At least it's easy to get to, and the stadium itself is nice. Hopefully it will be much more attractive for urban footy fans in NYC & NJ, who don't necessarily own cars or want to deal with the hassle of traffic to get to a game...??? I think having a stadium with good atmosphere in the NY area is crucial to MLS.

Looks like all the grass is in today.
I really like the fact the grass pretty much goes right up to the stands, unlike here where we have metres of concrete floor leaving just a sliver of warm up from the touchline.
I really hope they change that for the installation of grass this winter.

It probably has to do with the bubble. When you play in the bubble at BMO in the winter, the turf goes right to the edge of the turf.

Think about how you would feel if TFC became the Toronto Jolt Colas.
