Today I read a really good article in The National Post in regards to Major League Baseball doing away with Artificial Turf.

"Nothing Like it"

Unfortunately I can't seem to find an online link... however the article gives chronological detail of how the Majors enbraced Astro Turf at full force over the decades, and now they have gradually gone back to grass... with the exception of 2 fields in North America.

Great Article! I encourage you to read it... but moreso the reason why I am posting this thread is to get a sense from you of why MLS doesn't see the faults that MLB went through... and enforce the use of grass more as opposed of Artificial Turf.

P.S. if you can find the link... post it... great quotes... great read!

I think MLS knows that grass is the only way to go but in a young league you take what you can get.

agreed.. sounds like garber wants this to happen, but realizes MLS isn't in a position to strong arm the franchises.

Always nice to see fake grass getting bad press.

I think I remember hearing that when Minnesota opens their new ballpark next year that Tampa and Toronto will be the only teams still using fake grass.

I think the truth is coming out... Baseball players are beign quoted as saying they prefe grass and do not want to play on turf in particular in their later years... I mean how much running do Baseball players really do =P and they still prefer Grass!

Health concerns aside... there is a certain romantic quality to playing on grass instead of turf.
It may be inside a big stadium, but there is still that sense of being in nature when you play on a natural field.
I'm not sure how baseball players can complain about their bodies hurting on turf (they really don't do much).
But from a purely nostalgic standpoint, it makes a big difference.
It may affect a players attitude on the field, perhaps making them play better even?

Whatever the case... grass is great!

I think Tampa has a new natural grass stadium on the way as well. So in about a decade (at most), Toronto will be the only team in the MLB with an artificial surface.

Tell that to the outfielder who sprints 30 yards and dives full stretch to snag a fly ball three inches from the ground. That's going to hurt whether you land on grass or FT but I bet the FT hurts more.

Also, it's the teperature issue. FT heats up like a furnace. Grass stays relatively cool.

Not true. Tampa is locked into their crappy stadium for another 20+ years.

I read that article too this morning. This link is pretty much the same article, including JP's comments and the chronological order of artificial turf in MLB.

Anybody remember who won the last all turf world series? The 1993 Blue Jays.

I don't think that it make the difference while you are playing on the Artificial grass or Natural grass. I think that both make the same conditions play on them. The only is to need that we should be make our mind set and just concentrate on the game.

The ball bounces differently on turf, and foot plant adjustments can be awkward - see Koevs ACL injury.
