we need help today from Chivas is we want to stay close to the Revs..
New England has not been as strong away from home this season and
thats good for TFC...2-0 Chivas.

tie is best.. yes... but sadly, a tie ties both of them with us... but that's better than either NE or Chivas winning at this point. Who knows which one we might be fighting with til the bitter end.

Chivas has two games in hand as well.

I notice Chivas has a pretty decent schedule for those final 8 games while NE does not.

i think we can catch Chicago so a NE loss would be best result

Chi town is away at columbus then we face them in 2 weeks back to back losses for them and if we win away at LA and Chi town we could see ourselves in 2nd place

We're gonna need 3 wins and probably a tie, or it will come down to tie breakers, and I don't like our chances on tie breakers.

I'm watching this game and hoping it's a boring nil nil result.

A result is better for us than a draw.

A draw is only better for us in a scenario where we finish ahead of both Chivas and NE. But given the games in hand, the odds that we will beat out both these teams are very very low.

We want someone to lose this game, and then we want that team to keep losing.

Man, I hate watching Chivas games unless I'm trying to fall asleep. MLS should just forget to tell Chivas, Colorado and Dallas when the league starts next year.

A draw is only better for us in a scenario where we finish ahead of both Chivas and NE. But given the games in hand, the odds that we will beat out both these teams are very very low.

We want someone to lose this game, and then we want that team to keep losing.

Look at it this way:

Us: @LAG, @CHI, SJE, RSL, @NYR
DC: SJE, CHV, CLB, @KCW
Seattle: CHV, @NER, @CLB, @KCW, FCD
Chivas: NER, @SEA, NYR, @DCU, KCW, SJE, @CHI, HOU
New England: @CHV, @NYR, SEA, @FCD, @COL, CLB, CHI, @CLB
Colorado: @SJE, SJE, @KCW, NER, @FCD, @RSL
RSL: @HOU, @FCD, NYR, @TFC, COL

Except for Chivas, most of the close pack have majority of their remaining games away -- and everyone, including ourselves, have a wretched road record. Only Seattle and New England have somewhat okay records.

Assuming home wins and road losses, and that Columbus/Chicago/Houston/LA are the top 2 of each conference:

CHV: 48 = W3
DCU: 45 = E3
SEA: 43 = W4
TFC: 43 = E4
=========
NER: 42
COL: 42
RSL: 40

43 is the bare, bare minimum -- let's get more than that. Cummins, if you're reading this, don't you DARE hold back and aim for 43. It likely won't be enough, period.

And even if everyone's games against New York end in a win...New England would sneak in ahead of us (they have 1 away game against the Red Craps @ Giants Stadium). Therefore, one is sickly, two is shocking, three is not okay, four is wobbly and five is heaven. Let's go to heaven!

Con't...

And let's even look at Dallas and KC...

FCD: @KCW, RSL, NER, @SJE, COL, @SEA
KCW: FCD, COL, @HOU, @CHV, SEA, DCU

Again assuming all home wins and all road losses:

FCD: 36
KCW: 39

Again note that KC actually has 4 wins away from home this year, making them by far the best road team of the chase pack. I wouldn't count out KC either...

Still, after all's said and done -- a result is good for us ONLY IF the losers keep losing. A draw will remove two points off the table for Chivas, but gains NE one. One (or the other) then must start losing, and that isn't always guaranteed.

Yohan
09-13-2009, 03:18 PM
i would count out KC, just because they are more inconsistent than TFC all year, and seems to have not found it under new coach

Terry Vaughn has his moments, ditto Silviu Petrescu...I think the only person whom has really avoided shite a lot is Michael Kennedy and Alex Prus, even if the latter called "handball" on Wynne a couple times.

And yes, for failing a fitness test Kennedy is not going to be assigned to any more games this year.

Ya, it reminded me of Donovan running at Tyrone Marshall in Seattle. He runs straight at him, ducks inside him and takes to the air even though Marshall had backed off and there was no contact. Referee bought it and Marshall had his second yellow of the night.

What makes a penalty is not always a straight dismissal. Hell, it's not even always a card.

Easy. That card was given for a foul that occurred earlier in the play. The official played avantage, and carded Attakora when the play ended, before the next restart.

Agreed, but Reis was the last man and took away a scoring opportunity, so if it is called a penalty, and not a dive as the replay seemed to show, I think the ref has to give a red.

Straight from the FIFA Rule Book:

A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any
of the following seven offences:
• serious foul play
• violent conduct
• spitting at an opponent or any other person
• denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring
opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply
to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
• denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent
moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a
free kick or a penalty kick
• using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
• receiving a second caution in the same match

There was no advantage played. The whole thing happened while the ball was out of touch.

Not to mention that Toledo seemed content not to book Attakora at first (literally didn't reach in his pocket for about 30 seconds), and then did only after guy on the ground started acting seriously hurt.

We needed a tie. Chivas winning puts them in and us out. Conferences don't matter in MLS past the first two in each division, so as things stand, the playoffs would include:

Columbus 42 pts
Chicago 39 pts
Houston 40 pts
Los Angeles 38 pts
Seattle 37 pts
Colorado 36 pts
Chivas 36 pts
DC 36 pts

If new England had won, we'd be no better off. A tie was the only result that helped us, as both New England and Chivas had points in hand.

ensco

^Sorry jloome, but the question isn't "what makes us better off today" but "what makes us better off overall"

What doesn't factor in to that table is the games in hand. Both teams are statistiscally quite likely to finish ahead of us, because of the games in hand. We were actually likelier to overtake DCU, Colorado and Seattle, than either NE or Chivas, prior to yesterday's game (and it may still be true even after NE's loss). What we want is one of Chivas or NE to fall out of bed and lose most of their games. The odds that both collapse, while this possibility exists of course, are much smaller. It's only in this latter, more unlikely case, that the tie helps.

It's only a three game swing. THey don't have to "collapse." Both are close to .500 teams, so it's entirely possible they'll drop two or even all three o those games. So really, this is a very hypothetical look at things. I'll worry about points in hand. A tie yesterday gives them both 34 but that's better than a full game for the eighth spot, which is what we're fighting for.

Now, we're a full game back of EVERY one of the teams we're chasing.

ensco
09-14-2009, 11:55 AM
OK maybe not a collapse, I take that point, but we need a couple of teams to take a good stumble. We need 3 of the teams we're fighting with to lose some games.

This chart shows what I was talking about. Before yesterday, both Chivas and NE had about a 25% chance of missing. NE was actually ahead of Chivas. Both were much lower than our 61% chance of missing. It's now been updated for the result, so Chivas has only a 13% chance of missing, while NE has dropped closer to us at 46%. We're now at 59% because of the result.
