Just got a call from Donmin8r,

WE'RE A GO

the Exhibition place board of directors has passed the motion.
The guys voted and only 1 person wasn't in favour of grass.
This means that Mayor David Miller, Depty Mayor Joey Pants
and the local counselors all voted pro grass.

Now it's going to city council for the next round of voting on Sept 30th.

Also, Danny Dichio and Adrian Serioux were there for the vote on behalf of the team.

GREAT JOB!!!

Dear all the people involved in pushing for grass and players like JDG,

Thank you! Thank you for taking the long term success of this great club as seriously as we do every single day. This is all we're ever expected from you.

We will continue to do our part in the stands as always. Keep up the good work.

Very good, as long as nothing comes out of the woodwork and bite us in the *ss.

That's why I suggest that everyone try to get ahead of sports talk radio and call the Fan and AM640, etc. and talk this up as a great thing for Toronto and soccer enthusiasts accross the GTA.

Play up the increased community use at Lamport (bulble) and the new pitch that will be built in Etobicoke and that

MLSE is paying for everyhting 100%!

i'm a little concerned about the federal election talk now. Normally I'd love to get a chance to turf out Harper, but let's do it a bit later in the fall, eh? ;)
I see that fed parliament returns Sept 14, and the Globe is speculating the Libs could basically bring down the gov late Sept/early Oct. MLSE is expecting to get fed approval on Oct 1.

Are you sure that step is necessary?

The Province and the Feds kicked in money for the construction but ownership resides with the City. I presume that the Feds (and Province) have no veto power if the owner of the facility opts to make a change.

Well, the other thing to ask then is it the federal government itself that is to approve it or was it handed over to a "Ministry" portfolio?

If it was the latter, beaucracy survives any change in government.

Dear friends and neighbours,

I wanted to share this good news about a major investment in community and professional soccer in Toronto. If there is anything else I may help you with at City Hall, contact me at 416-392-4009 or at councillor_pantalone@toronto.ca (councillor_pantalone@toronto.ca).

Sincerely,
Joe Pantalone
Deputy Mayor
City of Toronto

As you know, I spend a good amount of time ensuring our 192-acre Exhibition Place continuing to evolve as Toronto's outstanding Waterfront, park-like, entertainment, environmental, sports and exhibition facility.

Two years ago, with Mayor David Miller's support, I spearheaded the building of BMO Field. It is an amazing success and has done wonders for Toronto's soccer community and our image.

I am now pleased to let you know we are taking the next steps in building on this success:

By replacing the current artificial turf with a natural grass field (this will allow for international players and teams to play here), and
By placing the winter bubble (from November to April) of each year at Allan Lamport Stadium.

Today, Exhibition Place Board of Governors approved the above which will see Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Limited (MLSEL) invest $5.5 million dollars. Toronto City Council will now consider this proposal, which I expect will be approved, at our meeting commencing September 30, 2009.

I kinda thought so.
You just wait, no sooner than real grass is in place those boatmen will want in.
The one excellent arguement would be that American football will tear the pitch up as it did at Wembley.

Lacrosse at BMO is entirely dependent on whther or not the Nationals surivive or can afford the rent at BMO. If they want out, I can't see BMO Field holding them to an agreement that the team cannot afford.

As for the Argos, I choose to believe that their ownership is intelligent enough to not commit this type of incredible public relations disaster!

I don't think Cynamon and Sokolowski are stupid enough to do something so foolish. A lot of us go to Argos games but if they were to do anything to hurt the TFC game day experience, the Argos would be dead to me forever!

Argos...F**k them...they had their chance..let them stay at the dome.

Once they put in the North Stands, they won't be redesigning the stadium to make it accessable for the Argos. And there is no way in hell you could fit a CFL sized field in BMO without major renovations once they go up... and they have already said that North Stands are going up. I would consider the whole "Argos playing in BMO" 99% closed at this point.

only 1 CFL team plays on grass..... for a reason (cost savings, more predictable field).
the addition of grass to BMO puts another cost in the face of the Argos. TFC is footing the bill for all of this, and the Argos would immediately ruin the field, which would need resodding before the next soccer season. I doubt they can do that every year in this climate and not have a perpetual start-of-MLS-season problem.
I remember when Becks and the Gals played at Edmonton in May of 2008 -- the field was a joke... and that was long after the CFL season had ended. They went and completely resodded it shortly after.

and this doesn't even begin to consider the problem of field dimensions, seating capacity, renegotiation of the operating agreement for the stadium.

No. If there is any place the feds end up sucking up to time and time again when an election is called, its Quebec.

True although it will be a fairly small stand and truthfully, the south stand could be demolished in no time at all. It's little more than a large bleachers.

What a great week this has been, well except for the Legend that is DD retiring. TFC forever!

While true, the grand staircases at both sides of the west stand would present another obstacle toward field lengthening. In order for the Argos to move in, BMO would require significant structural changes.

Just received the following email from Toronto Sports and Social Club:

Dear James,
We have received news from the City of Toronto and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) that could potentially impact all leagues currently playing at (a) Lamport Stadium and (b) BMO Field (indoor starting in November).

A proposal is set to go before Toronto City Council on September 30, 2009 regarding the installation of natural grass at BMO Field. If this proposal goes forward, this will impact TSSC leagues in two ways:

1) There will no longer be a sports dome over the BMO field. Instead, the field at Lamport Stadium (King/Dufferin) (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Lamport%20Stadium,%20Toronto,%20ON&sll=43.654508,-79.404964&sspn=0.06595,0.131664&ie=UTF8&ll=43.64974,-79.421883&spn=0.13191,0.263329&t=h&z=12&iwloc=A) will be covered with a sports dome. Consequently all “November- starting” BMO leagues will be moved to Lamport Stadium. New field turf was installed at this facility in 2008 and will be of comparable size and quality of BMO Field

2) Construction at Lamport Stadium would begin on October 5th to install the necessary infrastructure needed to erect the dome. This may force us to delay, move or cancel games for the current Lamport leagues during the weeks of October 5th and October 12th. For the weeks of October 19th onwards, all current Lamport leagues would then be moved to BMO Stadium (outdoor).

Of course, if the proposal is rejected by City Council, no changes will likely be needed for the rest of the fall season.

This is what we know at this time. As you can appreciate, we have been monitoring this situation for quite some time now in an effort to ensure that TSSC members are well represented.

Once we hear the result of the Sept 30th vote, we will be in touch again to let you know exactly how your leagues may be affected. As always, we will work hard to find solutions that minimize league disruptions.

Sincerely,
TSSC Admin Team

To be honest, I'm a bit blindsided by all of this.

My understanding was that David Miller was going to run. I heard it from several reliable sources last week. These same sources have informed me that we have the votes for the MLSE proposal to pass Council.

I can't see a reason why this would change because the mayor will only be in office for another 13 months.

IMO - The proposal is good for everyone. Therefore, is should pass next week.

If anyone knows anything or has an opinion I would be happy to hear/read it.

Yeah - it's a brilliant plan by MLSE IMHO. Key factor is that they are adding 2000+ hours of community use over what we have now. The City is basically turning down an increase in revenue if they say no.

It's the same thing at Toronto City council. The so-called right will oppose the so-called left on whatever the issue not because it makes sense but because the hate each others guts.

Today is a great day for Toronto! David Miller needs to go - he has done nothing good for our city (garbage strike, taxes, blocking Island Airport). Yeah, he's a big TFC fan but that doesn't get him off the hook for being a shitty mayor. The grass project is a commercially viable one and will go through because it makes sense, not because of David Miller. Besides, MLSE will carry all political and financial clout needed for the project to move along.

Doug Holyday might be the exception here. He's fiscally conservative, but his political decisions tend to be based more on sound logic than on ideology. He did vote in favour of funding the construction of BMO Field - albeit with potential use from the Argos in mind - so I doubt he'd be opposed to any plan that would increase revenue for the city while increasing the number of hours of community-use soccer.

Sorry, the truth is David Miller have a minimal impact on the existence of TFC. The City of Toronto put in $10 million of the $63 million. If you want to thank a politician, why don't you thank Stephen Harper - he put in $27M.

Although Toronto did contribute the land, the city has ownership of the stadium. Had we not build the stadium, that place was sitting idle anyways. The $10 million investment in the stadium was easily recovered by the impact of the U20s tournament alone. If you know you are getting a new stadium with less than 1/6th of the cost and an anchor tenant for years to come, anybody with a brain will say yes.

Ultimately, MLSE gave us TFC. They were the ones who pulled the strings between the three levels of government and the CSA.

Lastly, I state again - this is nothing political. I am simply diffusing any thoughts that grass will not grow at BMO if Miller is not here. And to do this, I have to show you why Miller had minimal efforts into the success of the club to date.

You have a right to your opinion but I think that if the Mayor wasn't a strong supporter of this it may not have happened... You really do need a mayor's support and if he viewed TFC as a minor league team on the world stage, with fad support that will wear off, then you could have had a hostile mayor... So yes his support has helped, if only to get it done faster.

More so there is no need to make such negative comments about the guy, you don't have to like what he has done, but he cares for the city and acted in the best interest of the city as he saw it as often as possible. It may not meet your view, but no view is universally correct, there is no need for the type of harsh comments about him personally. Particularly Most Mayors between 1890-and 1905 would have all been much worse, as easy example without research, then what ever your view of Miller is.

Mayors tend to provide a certain level of support to every team in their city. David Miller's affection for TFC does not give the team any additional political clout. Let me ask you a question - from the city's perspective, if the Argos are prepared to make the financial investments to move into BMO, do you think he will attempt to block it?I don't think that is the politically correct and the moral thing to do as the mayor. I don't think him putting on a kit and showing up at games had expedited the building of the stadium, or will expedite the grass process. He's not going to block the Argos for us, or hurry the process of expanding BMO.

Also, people attributed some of TFC's success and the team's existence to Miller. I rememberd him showing up in the first of second game of the inaugural season. But if he is worthy of the praise he is receiving here, he should have explicitly showed his support when MLSE was lobbying a franchise from MLS. He should have been promoting TFC before MLSE sold 14,000 season tickets. He wasn't visible until the TFC product was proven.

It's obvious you have an agenda here... there is always room for improvement... and your just looking for it.

Miller will be an NDP MPP, or write columns in the Star, and I will dislike 75% of what he stands for. But so what?

Miller fought with every fiber of his being for something I care a lot about. Something that, in the grand scheme of things, is not important to the vast majority of people.

The sheer weight of political muscle he threw into this is almost unbelievable. I mean, it's only soccer.

This, combined with the fact that he is an honorable person, makes him a special person here. I know I would buy him a beer anytime I see him at BMO. Anytime. I would wager the vast majority feel the same way.

If anyone doesn't like him, go pound sand somewhere else.

If you took a look at the premise of my arguments, David Miller didn't do the grunt work to obtain the MLS franchise, get the stadium built, sell 14,000 season tickets without playing a game, or create the atmosphere at BMO. Can anyone provide arguments otherwise?

Hence, my opinion is that when TFC moves forward and needs to install grass, expand the stadium, or block the Argos, whomever is in the mayor's office is going to at the financials and social uses. If MLSE is going to foot the entire bill, which they are doing with the grass, the mayor is not going to reject the project because they are not a soccer fan.

This is my last post on this topic...I am not going to bother to get your head out of the sand.

I think we all have an appreciation of the complexity of relationships required for this to happen. Yes, many people deserve credit for BMO et al too. If this is your point.

But you are totally, utterly, flat out wrong about Miller. Without him, it doesn't happen. This is just one small example that I referred to earlier in the thread.

The Mayor of Toronto is generally supposed to be competing with other municipalities for new business. Is it really true that backing Hamilton over Toronto is something "any" Mayor of Toronto would have done?

Miller decided to do something positive for MLSE at a tense moment in their negotiations over BMO, and he turned his back on the dollars that might come with a new NHL team, and the hockey community. This wasn't a costless decision - McCown ripped him on the Fan for it.

We soccer fans are eternally in his debt for this, and all that he did.

apparently I'm not a true TFC fan I didn't do grunt work either I'm not a member of any of the firms (though it'll change this winter) I got into the team afterwards, during that first season.. hell I didn't even know about the MLS prior to the 2007 season...

When you "got on the bandwagon" dosen't matter what matters is what you do once on it. Miller has put is support to the team.. he's not out there with Argo, Raptors and Leaf gear on regularly, he is a support of TFC he has shown that, and yes he has made things move faster because of that.

If the Argo's wanted to move to the National Soccer Stadium and were willing to put up some of the expanse for expansion and agree to get those lines of the field then ya I have no issue with it.

I'm still concerned about what is going to happen next year with the lacrosse lines on the grass
