From Paul's tweet:

Paulbeirne (javascript:void(0);): YAY! http://twitpic.com/hawgd (http://twitpic.com/hawgd) (7 minutes ago (http://twitter.com/Paulbeirne/status/3910743161) from Tweetie (http://www.atebits.com/))

It looks like the pic was taken underwater, but that hair tells me that this is a pic of JDG signing his papers. There's also a twitpic of Mo in the room... I think this is confirmation!

TFC just sent out a release, saying only that the team's "first Designated Player" will be introduced at a press conference at BMO Field at 1:!5 this afternoon.

Big day for TFC today! Follow me I'll try to stay on top of things here.

and then this pic of Mo http://twitpic.com/harqm, posted at like 7:30am so they were working early!!!

How fast could MLS ratify a contract once signed? I can imagine a holdup of some nature due to the size of the contract, but I'd love to see him tomorrow.

At least we don't have to worry about immigration crap!

Ben, you MUST ask Mo if Dwayne was guaranteed to be the highest paid player on the team and, if so, how will Julian's signing impact that.

that would be some hard hitting journalism.
We know that Ben knows the tough questions, but we also know that some people don't want anyone to rain on their parade.

I'm sure the MLS FO had to approve before the final signatures were given.

BTW, for a DP signing, not just MLS FO but the Board of Governors must approve.

JDG is a professional athlete why would he not be match fit and ready to go ?

He hasn't played since Canada was "eliminated" at the Gold Cup in mid/late July, so it's been about 6 weeks, so he can probably play, but only 45-55 minutes or somethig like that. Remember when Ricketts first came? He too wasn't match fit following a similar layoff and typically played 45-55 minutes in the beginning so it's not unreasonable to expect something similar from de Guzman.

True but in the mean time he was in Germany and trialled/trained with Mönchengladbach. So I doubt he's THAT much out of shape.

Exactly. he only has U21 caps. Until he actually suits up for Holland, he technically still could be convinced. So listen to my plan.

Start working on JDGII. Get him to sign for TFC in the next year or two. Playing alongside Julian, Gerba, Serioux and DeRo might change his mind to play for Canada. :D

Exactly. he only has U21 caps. Until he actually suits up for Holland, he technically still could be convinced. So listen to my plan.

Start working on JDGII. Get him to sign for TFC in the next year or two. Playing alongside Julian, Gerba, Serioux and DeRo might change his mind to play for Canada. :D

Huh? Huh? I like it anyway.

i hope so too... with so many friendlies to go between now and the WC tho, im expecting holland to cap him at least once to try out some new players and see who they will take with them. one injury or two in the dutch midfield and it may be too late. i hope im wrong!

Amado just behind JDG. It will work, those two running the midfield will be insane.

EDIT: See it doesn't have to be so structured. You put both Amado and JDG in the middle. you let them cover each others ass when one is attacking. In a 4-4-2 this can work. As long as both understand that one always has to help the defense.

The f*ck are you on about ... he partners Hutch in team Canada in a fairly basic 4-4-2.

He's always deep picking up balls and interrupting opposing attacks.

I would say he advances up the field maybe 10% more than Hutch does.

He's fits the characteristics of a box-to-box player (which is when he plays his best) rather than a pure central attacking player.

You play him as a central attacking player and you're only using half of his attributes.

Not to mention we already have two ball hungry players whose instincts are to gravitiate towards the hole.

So facepalm yourself. ... k :)

No I didn't, but I'd rather have the players in their natural positions - DM for JDG and AM for Guevara - but I'm more against having Guevara as a DM in MLS.....just don't think he can be physical or motivated enough to be a ball winner against bigger MLS opponents than in CONCACAF.

I see Robbo going at the end of the season, and don't think Wynne or Jimmy B will be moved up to permanent midfield......especially Jimmy.....he is our captain so unless he'll be getting the full 90 in mid (which I doubt.....Amado, Cronin, JDG, and Sanyang look to be our mids), he'll stay on D......Wynne and Jimmy may spend some time in midfield, but nothing permanent.

Formation's aside, Im still not too optimistic ... I mean the coach still has a huge impact on how a team plays, its structure, style etc. Players need direction .... otherwise they're just running around aimlessly, regardless of how talented.

Not sure Cummins is up for it.

Case and point ... look how Maradona is butchering the Argentinian national side .... and closer to home, Canada with and without Dale Mitchell .... well ... ya ... obviously.

Why? You have two DM's clearing up the crap the comes up the middle. Wynne and Brennan taking out the wings and a strong, quick CB to smash the shit out of anything that comes into the box.

I've seen it work plenty of times, with teams worse than ours.

Well, Guevara's more of a space eater and positional player when he's deep in the middle ...

He's not really rugged enough to do dirty work ... nor should he be expected to.

Tbh, Im not sure Guevara takes direction pretty well ... he seems to have more of a free role wherever he plays. But I think that's probably advantageous.

I'd rather have players more disciplined to shut down the opposition ... which is why I posted a midfield three of JDG, Cronin and Sanyang.

Guevara can partner JDG in the midfield, but then Sanyang won't have a spot, which I think is a bit of shame.

D? Dmid! He's basically been playing it this year anyway. Most of his time on the ball has been inside our own 1/2 anyway.

Yes this is what I mean....should've been more explicit....

I don't think Amado is focused on the defensive side of the game enough to be reliable as a ball winner playing in a DM spot.....not for TFC anyways.....he would die for the Honduras shirt.....many feel he doesn't have the same feeling playing for TFC.....I think its just too much of a gamble to rely on him to be a steady defender, especially with the physicality of MLS play.

He's been on the defensive half for TFC this year out of necessity, not choice.

I like Sanyang because he can cover a lot of ground in the middle, is not afraid to get stuck in, and can make the short passes required from DMs (although I've seen him increase his range recently with positive results)

Any formation going forward needs to include him occupying a deep central position.

I think he'd be wasted out wide.

You're right. A classic example of a talented team with somebody inept at coach ruining the potential.

the hand of god is giving Maradonna a prostate exam right now.

sorry, back to topic.

Good signing. Can't see why the guy is considered a DP though. He is Canadian after all...

What does nationality have anything to do with DP status?

I always hated online players like that

I think he won't be reflected in the game, but will be in the first roster update (probably early October, since that's when the UK gets the game).

According to Gamespot the game releases on Oct 20th...that should be enough time to get JDG in FIFA 10 with a TFC jersey. FUCK IT, that's enough time to get him on the front cover :)

As per sportsnet, TFC signed Hulian De Guzman (pronounced it that way).

As per TSN, Julian De Guzman played for Deportivo La Corona (pronounced it that way). His salary won't count toward the cap at all.

That's how they pronounced it on CTV as well!

Don't they realise he is from Toronto and not somewhere in Spain?

Formation's aside, Im still not too optimistic ... I mean the coach still has a huge impact on how a team plays, its structure, style etc. Players need direction .... otherwise they're just running around aimlessly, regardless of how talented.

Not sure Cummins is up for it.

Case and point ... look how Maradona is butchering the Argentinian national side .... and closer to home, Canada with and without Dale Mitchell .... well ... ya ... obviously.

Well said.

And still no international clearance certificate.

We get JDG for 5 matches.

Now that's a hell of a midfield when we're down one goal.

Nothing. However, when I look at the players on the Canadian Men's National team, none of them jump out as a DP-type individual except, obviously, DeRo. Of course, we don't know how much De Guzman is getting paid anyway.
Personally, I had hoped we would eventually sign a goal-scorer as a DP.

JDG won't be playing and they are blaming the time zones! :picard:
"Julian de Guzman, Toronto FC's newest and highest paid player, is unlikely to make his debut today, a victim of time zones as the work week came to a close in Europe before his international transfer paperwork could be completed."

We do in the long run. DP = price hikes on all tickets and concessions.

So in a way...we do.

i don't see any direct correlation between ticket prices and DP. ticket prices have always gone up even without a DP.

in most sports ticket prices are set at what the market will bear, not simply to cover expenses. So expenses could be low, but the team will set the price at what the market will bear to make more profit.

First of all I meant us as a team are not paying it. Second of all a players salary will not affect ticket prices lol. Not to mention it would make a difference if we knew how much he's getting paid anyway lol. Anyway we'll find out soon.

Here's how TFC pays for JDG. Jan transfer window comes around and a Spanish team at the bottom of table table approachs TFC and say,"JDG would really help us avoid relegation", TFC replies "No problem, it will cost you a $1M loan fee plus a friendly in Aug". Spanish coughs up the money and TFC subsidizes the cost of JDG. JDG earns two salaries and gets to play both in Europe and for TFC. TFC still gets JDG for the important part of the season and the Spanish team is paying a big chunck of his salary. Its feindishly brilliant on the part of MLSE.

Thanks to Bekham for showing MLS a new model for acquiring DP's.

Why think negative. Be happy that there's been an improvement to the team. Not to mention if he plays somewhere else in the off season it keeps him in shape, he's still used to the ball and he gets all around training at a probably higher level than ours. Not to mention that he only gets one salary lol. I don't know why it's "fiendishly" brilliant it just makes sense.

This is just ridiculous as a whole, why would you want MLSE to lose money when this is good for De Guzman and us anyway.

JDG finished his la liga season in May....since then just Gold Cup games. Now he only has 5 games more to go, before he is off again til next March/April.

Very true. Injury is a big problem, can't believe I missed that.
It really is a two way street though. I know I would really like to see us try and make more use of loans in the future. Particularily if we get alittle more cap room this winter. Obviously any team lending a player to us would be taking the same risk with regards to a potential serious injury.
I wouldn't have much of a problem with us loaning out JDG as long as the timing was right.
That actually raises a good question. If we loan out a player to another league, is there anyway we could make some money off of it and use it as allocation?
