Because you are part of the reason it's happening, you should know...
After negotiations with the City, the Ex Place Board is meeting in public tomorrow to vote on a new deal with MLSE that will see grass replace the turf at BMO Field in exchange for improvements at other soccer facilities in the city.
More news later today...
You can thank the Mayor (who was behind this) in person at Saturday's game.

I think that we should keep our powder dry for the time being.

City officials and the Board of Governors are not expecting grass at BMO enthusiasts to attend this meeting. So let's not blindside them.

I have it on good authority that this will likely go smoothly. We may need to get involved in the coming weeks as this moves through other approval processes. Maybe we can become more involved then.

This proposal is a very good one - for everyone. Our physical presence will not make an impact other than to distract. Let's just see what transpires tomorrow night.

Football, Argonauts at Tiger-Cats, Monday, TSN: 844,000

Toronto FC's television audience: next to nil

There are few doubts that Toronto FC is a success at the box office. On the field, there are strides to be made but the team has at least become a contender for a playoff spot early in its infancy.
But as a TV property, it has a very long way to go. Ratings are abysmal, as witnessed by Saturday's game in Seattle that couldn't even draw 100,000 viewers to CBC. That's not far out of line with what TFC has drawn all season and throughout most of its brief existence.
It' s a bit of a mystery why the team hasn't fared better in the ratings. The games are interesting and the home crowd puts on a pretty good show. The road games aren't much to look at, especially when the other team's feed is used and broadcasters call things from a Toronto studio. But that's to be expected until ratings start to rise.
So why aren't more people watching? Where are all those soccer fanatics we keep hearing about?
My theory is that too many soccer fanatics have little interest in Major League Soccer because they find it inferior to the big European leagues. .

So it drew 1/8th.

Yes it looks bad at first, but the CFL is pretty entrenched here and its going to be a while before we get those numbers.. especially when matching up against a home derby like Toronto-Hamilton. The reality for Toronto FC is that they are a third year team that gets less than minimal coverage in the main stream media. Add that to the fact that there's no other Canadian teams (yet) and you should be able to figure out where he short fall lies.

I don't blame you for playing the numbers game though. If I were supporting a league in decline, I'd be looking to shit on anything new as well.

David Miller isn't everyone's favorite politician but he has stuck to his guns regarding the stadium and the introduction of grass. I've spoken twice to him personally - Stu once - and the message never wavered. This will be a big step forward in helping the team add talent down the road.

No one gives Joe Pantalone much credit on here, in fact he's had some undeserved nasty abuse dished at him. But Joe, head of the CNE board, signed off on the stadium specs that created a playing area too small for the CFL to consider using without forking over prohibitive fees for renovations. He had his head in the game before the first sod turning, fought hard to ensure the stadium was jam-packed with soccer rentals to turn away other sporting interests and has skillfully balanced the city's financial needs vis-a-vis the stadium without hurting soccer's interests. A job well done.

As for CFL'ers whistling past the graveyard?

I had to visit my son's high school yesterday and was standing in a hallway chatting with two teachers as students passed by. Soccer shirts everywhere, caught plenty of banter about the WC qualifiers. Teachers say, despite a quality baseball park next door, the school doesn't even field a team in city play and that the future of the two football teams is constantly in doubt. But soccer? They could field two senior and two junior squads in each of the boys and girls city leagues.

The game is running away from other sports with regard to the interests of young people. The MLS TV numbers will come the minute Vancouver and Montreal join. I'll also bet that next year's World Cup comfortably sets viewing records, being on our national network.

Mayor David Miller’s five favourite things to do in Toronto: 1. Attending a Toronto FC game at BMO Field. “Fantastic. Packed, showing the face of Toronto, people from every background, all on the same team. Not only that, this year when you go to a TFC game you’re going to see the team that’s going to win the championship of MLS.” ;)

i wouldnt worry about the CFL either..Jerry springer pulls in a lot of people too and the CFL is the jerry springer of sports..Lack of quality, mind numbing entertaining at best..CFL is inferior to the NFL, NCAA and pop warner football..TFC will be fine once the brand grows, maybe Vancouver will help? time will tell..

Grass will be nice..its what football is suppose to be played on..if its next season great more likely 2011 with undersoil heating, drainage work to be done..but the
team should be able to get players in to to with grass, if they cant then there is a bigger issue then just the turf.

CFL is not in a "decline". TV Numbers, attendence is up again this year.
This years Grey Cup is sold out, and the fastest selling grey cup in history.

Why do some TFC fans insist on bashing the CFL at any chance they get?

I enjoy both kinds of "football", but in my short expereinces between fans bases the most CFL fans are more approachable and friendly

^ wouldn't worry about the TV numbers. TFC is still a regional product.

They typically don't get national coverage in the lead up to games. I'm speaking about coverage in the Sports newscasts (Sportscentre, Sportsnet Connected) and other national media.

The sport is popular with youth and once networks start to realize that (and promote their own coverage of games) the ratings will pick up.

TV numbers being up is a waste of time right now. BBM Canada changed the way they track viewership to get a more accurate picture. Apparently the rankings are about the same, just shows more viewers amongst sports properties since they now know what you watch when you go out to bars or friends places.

I would say wait a few months before drawing any conclusions to see a trend emerge, and wait a year so you can have a year over year comparison to truly claim viewership is up.

The cfl cannot grow beyond what they have now. Ottawa if in will be another disaster for the league, that fact the league is even considering Ottawa again is a joke in it self..then you have a team like Hamilton playing in a toilet bowl of a stadium, Tor and BC playing before half filled/half empty stadiums...I enjoy gridiron football too only NFL, or NCAA type the CFL is not worth supporting..i would rather take bus trips to Buffalo, Detroit the attend a close CFL game in either Toronto or Hamilton. its sort of like pro hockey in Canada it cant grow anymore either, Hamilton has been deabted to death..Not Happing in our lifetime,
the NHL will never return to Winnipeg or Quebec as the audience is not there. So the NHL is done expanding i Canada..their only interest is now in the states.

You are blaming the league for having bad stadiums? ie Hamilton? I think Ivor Wynne is a wonderful stadium to watch a game. There is not a bad seat in the place. Yes the concessions are a joke but the city owns the stadium not Bob Young.

Ottawa coming back is not a "Joke" either. You obliviously have no knowledge why they "failed" the first time, or the second time. Read up on the Gilbermans.

As for half full stadiums, If that's a reason why you don't like the CFL. No Comment. It's a stupid reason.

Just admit it that main the reason why you don't like CFL is that you've never had fun at one of the games, or you don't have knowledge about the little differences about it that make it uniquely Canadian, then I challange you to come to a game and sit in Section 121.

yes it;s uniquely canadian..end zones so wide even evil kenevil failed to cross it....but when a league has no talented receivers you need as much room as possible.. do they still have the point for missing a field goal, point for failure..thats very nice very canadian..Ivor Wynne is a dump,
the colored seating is an eyesore on its own. Ottawa we can have two roughriders again...canadian eh!! No i have never enjoyed a game..last game i went to was in 1972 between the Ti cats and Montreal Alouettes,
i promised my self then i would never be back..and to this day have not..
i would welcome the challenge, but lets face it spending $20 on greyhound, another $30 for a game ticket, $10 for a cab to the stadium,
another $20 on dinner/ snacks.. thats $80 i would spend only to leave shortly after kick off cause i know i hate the league anyways and could not stomach it..sorry i cant afford to waste money on that..Hey if you like the CFL, cool all the power too ya, please let us CFL haters enjoy our

the last cfl player i could name is angelo mosca of the ticats, and he was more known for his wrestling skills then a cfl player.. the canadian rules

So after reading the letter of intent -
http://explace.smallboxsoftware.net/database/rte/BMO%20Field%20-%20Upgrade%20to%20Grass%20Field%20Final%20Sept%201 0%202009(1).pdf

Plan - grass at BMO, bubble relocated to Lamport, turf field for the Toronto District School Board or the city.

Who has to agree to it - The Ex Board, City Council, TDSB, Ontario and the Feds.
Responsiblities - MLSE to convince TDSB, board and city convince the province and the feds.

It looks like these are the milestone dates for the plan.

September 11, 2009 - The Ex board approves plan
September 30, 2009 - City agrees to plan
October 1, 2009 - Provincial and Federal agreement
November 27, 2009 - Drop dead date for moving the bubble to Lamport. If no deal reached, MLSE put up bubble at BMO
May 1, 2010 - NEW GRASS FIELD!!!
June 1, 2010 - Finish constuction of turf field for TDSA

Nov 27th sounds like a very important day.

Isn't Nov 29 the date for having the bubble up? There's construction work to be done in advance of the installation

Why is there a CFL vs NFL discussion here?

Facts:
Some like CFL better
NFL is richer, which also means bigger stadia, bigger players, etc.
This is a soccer forum. Or a football forum, if NFL/CFL are considered 'American (style) football'
No-one comes here to convince football fans to become soccer fans
Some soccer fans don't like the other football, and vice versa
Footbal fans are not going to convince anyone here that their game is better
This isn't even the right thread

this sounds almost too good to be true...but between TFC's last home match, assuming no playoffs can the undersoil heating and drainage
that needs to take place be done before May 1 ? or could their be a possible long TFC extended road trip to make sure the work is done on time? with our road record we dont want the team on the road any longer then necessary.

$5.5 million is a very serious commitment by MLSE

I think we can anticipate a long away stand at the beginning of the season either way. Of course by then all our away form woes will be long gone and we will blister the league.

Right?

Anyone?

That's right. There's a concrete bubble holder to be removed from BMO and installed at Lamport. Presumably that would be moved after the season, to be completed by the 27th. It could be started as early as Oct 1st if it doesn't affect games at BMO.

i,love real football not the canadian bastardization of the american game..
i have lots of reasons to hate the CFL.....No name players are an example,
the last cfl player i could name is angelo mosca of the ticats, and he was more known for his wrestling skills then a cfl player.. the canadian rules
are another turn off having to have a certain amount of canadian players on it..thats shite. and a 55 yd line? like WTF is the extra 5 yds need for ?

So us Canadians stole the sport from the Americans? Please ... if you're going to bash the CFL, at least cite reasons and facts that are actually true. The sport of football (gridiron) was invented in Canada and it took off in the US after Canadian universities such as McGill started competing against American universities like Harvard.

Yeah it's tight - keep in mind this is MLSE's ideal schedule. The letter from the Ex CEO and the Parks GM doesn't stress the timeline as much as MLSE's letter. But they think they can finish by may 1st if they can start at the end of the season.

I know nothing about grounds management so I don't know if this is possible.

With respect to the Provincial and Federal agreement. Will a federal election slow us down in any way?

Aside from the JDG news, there is also the EX agreement going on right now!

PB's twitter..

Question. How do you maintain? Answer: MLSE pays. Aeration, heat, moisture control etc.

Any risk, cost to Ex place? Answer MLSE is guaranteeing revenues ...rentals, parking etc

I hope it passes. Reading the letter it's a win win for the city and to Dom's point if this one doesn't pass it's going to be tough to sweeten the pot for the city and province.

As for federal approval - with the CSA backing letter and the commitment the stadium can continue being used for international competitions I don't see a problem. Same with the province in fact (OSA approving letter also goes a long way and they maintain the few guaranteed days they have)

The Ex doesn't lose any money due to the move as MLSE is going to cover the revenue that would normally be generated. Additionally if you note the fact that the promise of at least an additional international game would easily cover the majority of the revenue. So possible more "CNE" Cup style games.

Following this team and being its supporter is a roller-coaster ride of monstrous proportions.

Just a few days ago, everyone was steaming mad that Danny wasn't playing and whole cover-up story, then even more pissed that he might be traded/waived/booted out of TFC, then disconsolate and weeping when we found out he retired and now insanely happy to have JDG and grass on the right track.

Crazy stuff this team.
