I know that this isn't exactly TFC or MLS related but I think that it's a great write-up of the US/MEX game. This is exactly the type of mainstream exposure the game of soccer needs in the US (and in Canada).

Great article and I like the fact that the writer is not a soccer writer but more of a mainstream American sports writer who like he mentions use to be one of those sports writers who never liked the sport but he does now. Here is a guy that has attended every big league American sports event but nothing compares to what he experienced at Mexico City in the Mexico/USA game. I even like the fact that he seems to understand the strategies in soccer by the way he anaylyes both teams style of play and the way he compares it to the strategies of the other big time American sports. If you watch soccer just for the goals then you will be dissapointed there is so much other things happening in a game in the build up to a goal and trying to not get scored on, this writer seems to undertand this, not bad for a guy where soccer is a sport he never realy followed before.

I want to go to Azteca. But disguise my pro-American soccer bias.

Bill Simmons is pretty bullish on soccer. I've heard a couple of soccer related interviews with him and listened to his ESPN show and he truly thinks (like most of us) that soccer is the next big thing in America. There was a good article he wrote a couple years ago about what EPL team he should pick as 'his team" and went over all the pros and cons for each. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/060719 In my opinion it's a must read for new footy fans in north america.

I have a friend who was inspired by that article to pick a team to follow. Rather brilliantly, he chose newcastle! At least it's been interesting for him.
