Don't ask because I can't say who told me, but Mo has been in contact with John Arne Riise's agent and they're hoping to get a deal struck quickly for a possible DP slot for the remainder of this season + next season.

I'll keep you posted.

Wow. Holy shit. Here's something interesting in terms of how much money we might be talking about:

He was a regular member of the 1999-2000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_1_season_1999-2000) Ligue 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ligue_1) championship-winning side, however, he fell out of favour with coach Claude Puel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Puel) after admitting his desire to leave. Riise was subject of interest from English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England) Premier League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_League) clubs, especially Fulham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulham_F.C.) and Leeds United (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds_United_A.F.C.) that both tabled £4m bids in 2000,[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Arne_Riise#cite_note-1) though both came to nothing as Monaco wanted £6 million for him. He was then sold to Liverpool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool_F.C.) for £4 million the following summer.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Arne_Riise#cite_note-2)

Now there's something that came out of left field. I've seen him play outwide as a defender and a midfielder. Where do you think we'd use him if this is true?

This might be a clearer idea -

After being linked with moves to other English clubs, on 18 June 2008 Riise signed a four-year contract with A.S. Roma (http://www.redpatchboys.ca/wiki/A.S._Roma). The club reportedly paid a fee of £4m, which could rise up to £5m, with pay of €2.8m per year.

^ if he signed a 4 yr deal in 2008, this would mean he is still under contract...when was the last time the MLS paid a transfer fee to get a player? This is NOT happening

That would be absolutely great. But why would he leave Roma to come to TFC?

Maybe he's been told he's not in the plans. Maybe they'll release him outright? this would mean TFC won't have to pay a transfer fee and they can sign him anytime since he's out of contract no?

MLS would pay nothing in reality. Transfer fee would be paid by TFC I would think, under the MLS "One Entity" system or whatever the shit they call it, and then the salary would also be paid by the club.

This can most definitely happen if the money's there and if he's willing to leave Rome to come here. That, if anything, is the big question.

Could be. I suspect they'll try to get a transfer fee for him, though. If not from TFC, they'd likely get one from a lower level Premier League team if that was the case.

In the ase of JDG you could see where there would be conflicts because they were offering him a lot more money than he'll make in Europe. If this guy gets close to the same as he would in Europe it's unlikely that would cause any conflicts with the rest of the players. That's just the way the business works at that point.

Given that pretty much every preferable DP player isn't coming here, I'll take him. We need a good player at that position, our left is weak, and Riise's a bit more veratile than your giving him credit for.

And sure, scoring thunderbolts from out of nowhere, doesn't take much creativity, but it'll do.

I think any DP player, as long as he is significantly better than the player he is replacing, is absolutely worth the spot irrespective of what position on the pitch he figures to play in. It is hard to find as solid a player as him on the left side of the pitch for any team ... we would be only too fortunate to have him.

Hey guys, I'm back.

First off, The Keg is an excellent steak house. Pure class, seriously, you should try it sometime if you haven't.

Secondly, the couple are currently discussing their options. My friend, Alec, is Maria's first cousin, and he tells me that Maria (John's wife) wants to live in Toronto or New York. John however is happy at Roma and isn't too keen on a move to TFC (Let's face it...which major Euro star would be...) However, he is considering the move for her sakes. Alec tells me that Maria is also open to a move to the city while John stays at Roma, but she's not to keen on that. So basically, they're in bit of a limbo. So right now, we can file this under a very unlikely rumour, but because of the possibility that they're considering moving here, then we can't rule it out.

Finally, he tells me that his agent was in contact with Mo and not the other way around, and that the financial details were discussed briefly. Again, just talk I guess.

So, unless Maria grabs John by the scruff of the neck and drags him here, I don't see the move happening now. Alec did say he was open to a move to the MLS later in his career, but not now. So, we have three days to see what happens. Sorry if I got anyone overly excited.

Peace guys
