Reds ready to face world's best
Toronto take on Real Madrid on Friday at BMO Field
TorontoFC.ca
TORONTO -- With such legendary players as Raul, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo on the roster, it's hard to avoid feeling a bit star-struck at the idea of Real Madrid coming to BMO Field for a friendly against Toronto FC. While the Reds themselves are delighted and excited to be playing the Spanish giants, the idolatry will be withheld for at least 90 minutes on Friday night.

Toronto FC focused on playoffs 1st, Real Madrid 2nd
John F. Molinaro
It's not as though Toronto FC players aren't excited about their exhibition match Friday against Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid.
It's just that they have more pressing concerns right now, namely helping the team qualify for the Major League Soccer playoffs for the first time.
To be sure, Toronto players are enthusiastic about Friday's showdown at BMO Field against Real Madrid, the legendary Spanish side that boasts a roster of glittering superstars - Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo foremost among them.

Local soccer fans get Real treat
BMO Field rocks as all-star Spanish side puts on practice show for paying customers
Daniel Girard
For Noah Costa, the Portuguese national team jersey with Cristiano Ronaldo's name and number on the back is still very much in fashion. But the Manchester United colours on the walls of the 8-year-old Brampton boy's bedroom have definitely got to go.
Such is the frailty of allegiance when your favourite player – "not just in soccer, all sports" – changes teams, as Ronaldo did this summer, moving from the English side to Spanish titan Real Madrid for the record-setting transfer fee of $132 million (U.S.).

Real Madrid draws 18,000 for Toronto practice
John F. Molinaro
Real Madrid sure knows how to draw a crowd.
More than 18,000 fans filed BMO Field Thursday night to catch a glimpse of soccer royalty and watch the Spanish club practise ahead of its exhibition game against Toronto FC on Friday.
Rabid soccer spectators hooted and hollered at the top of their lungs, especially every time reigning FIFA world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo touched the ball, as los Galacticos strolled through their paces during the 55-minute training session.

Kaka, Alonso may debut against TFC
By Gary Melo
TORONTO -- Two of Real Madrid's biggest summer signings could make their club debuts on Friday night when the team takes on Toronto FC in a friendly match at BMO Field.
Speaking ahead of the team's practice Thursday evening, Real Madrid manager Manuel Pellegrini hinted that midfielders Kaka and Xabi Alonso could factor into his squad selection for the game.

Spanish royalty

It was reminiscent of the scene in Rocky IV when Russian pugilist Ivan Drago and his promoters sat stoic at the head table while Rocky Balboa looked like a deer in the headlights at the opposite end.
Except on Thursday night at BMO Field the Russian ensemble were Spanish giants Real Madrid while Balboa was played by the Toronto FC pairing of coach Chris Cummins and captain Jim Brennan.

TFC keeps a lid on it
By LANCE HORNBY (lance.hornby@sunmedia.ca)
With a straight face, Toronto FC defender Marvell Wynne said he would treat tonight's game against world goliath Real Madrid like any other game. Until the final whistle, that is.
"Then I'll probably be like a schoolgirl, asking for an autograph or a sweater," Wynne said yesterday, as tiny TFC of Major League Soccer prepared to take on FIFA's team of the 20th century, a club recently infused with almost $400 million US in transfers.

Galacticos touch down to rapturous welcome
Paul Attfield
We’re not in Kansas any more. And as far as Toronto FC are concerned, not in Columbus, San Jose or any other Major League Soccer outpost either.
The eyes of the soccer world, on both sides of the Atlantic, will be trained on BMO Field in Toronto tonight when the hometown Reds take on the visiting Whites, better known as Real Madrid, the 31-time Spanish league champions.

Real madness infects Toronto
Storied Spanish club's scrimmage a thrill a minute for excitement-starved fans
Cathal Kelly (http://www.thestar.com/opinion/columnists/94561)
For several minutes, security and police held the bus up, nervously signalling to each other.
Apparently, they were worried about a stampede outside BMO Field, where several hundred supporters were waiting for Real Madrid's arrival. Now the bus, whose total worth temporarily exceeded half a billion dollars, was here. Nearly a hundred loose fans angled to be standing directly beside the door when it pulled up.

I don't know what's worse, an overpriced friendly, or Cathal back writing about soccer.

I still think we should rest some of our regulars and start some academy players. It'd give us and the coaching staff a good look at them.

Ronaldo drew a smattering of boos when he was fouled on the edge of the box and looked around for a foul call. It was a scrimmage

TFC coach Chris Cummins seemed taken aback by the scope of the event, including a packed news conference attended by 30 Spanish media travelling with the team and scores of others from across North America.

"Blimey, there's a lot of cameras here," he quipped. "The last time I saw this many was at my wedding."

It's Real Madrid, I'm sure their hardcore fans are following their pre-season pretty closely, especially since this is so close to the start of the Primera Liga season.

CANADIAN RILEY O'NEILL ON TRIAL IN GERMANY (http://torontomls.blogspot.com/2007/01/canadian-riley-oneill-on-trial-in.html)

Colorado Rapids supplemental draft pick Canadian Riley O'Neill is currently on trial in Germany with St. Pauli - looks like he scored a couple to boot. There may also be interest in Denmark and Belgium for the former University of Kentucky striker.

Apparently TFC had his rights in 2007 after Colorado drafted him 36th overall in the supplemental draft and Mo traded Conor Casey for his rights...don't know if TFC still has those rights

Cathal Kelly was certainly in full Eurosnob mood with his article on Real Madrid. Bet he cringes at the thought of Real playing a friendly against Toronto FC.

And YES! to today's SSG. Definitly more than makes up for yesterday's train wreck.

Funny enough I don't disagree with Catheter...other than the fact he still comes across as a complete douchebag in the article.

The only problem I have ever had with this game is how it affects our chances as a team to perform in games THAT MATTER.

Had this happened in a bye week or during an international break or outside the season schedule...game on baby.

But this game has already had serious implications on our playoff run and may yet have some more. It's a great business idea that severely clashed with what should technically matter, the development and success of this club.

yeah that's the only criticism I think is fair.

the positive side is from here on, it's just a game every saturday.. no fixture congestion.

rest will no longer be an issue. DC United now has 7 more games to play this season (1 US Open Cup + 6 CL games). Columbass has 6 CL games.... hopefully that helps our playoff run.
