down 1-0 on the road, no excuses - time for Toronto FC to step up!!!

People won't like this formation, but it allows Wynne and Brennan to go forward more (not that they haven't done so in the past):

I think JimmyB going forward are the least of our concerns

The flanks need to track back - 1 conceded is not an option in my books

A 2/3-0 hammering needs to happen - Someone needs to light Gaudette up like a christmas tree.. and remind him of the time spent rollin on the floor at BMO where PRI could have been attacking.

Really going out on a limb here, but we need a performance from this team that we haven't seen in some time. The last few leagues games just have not cut it. We need the 'Pre Gold Cup' TFC to show up in PR.

I predict a 3-0 win. We played a good game in New England, and I really think the team is pretty pissed at this point over missed opportunities. There is still a little miracle dust left over from Montreal, and Puerto Rico will feel it.

this won't be another montreal . they were under strength and inept that night, with nothing to play for other than the chance to piss off TFC. PRI do not fall into any of those brackets. they are organised, will play their strongest team and have everything to win. i expect some resolute defending from them and more swift counters. if it's still 0-0 at the 70 min mark, i will be nervous. amado is key in this game, he HAS to be fit...

It all depends on whether or not we'll be able to get that first goal. If we get it in the first half I think we might be able to blow them out of the water. We dominated them in Toronto, but they defended so hard that we got shut completely out of the game. Hopefully we learned from the game.

Gomez---Serioux---Wynne

jloome
08-03-2009, 02:26 AM
They're going to double-team DeRo all game long, and key against Marvell at right back on the counter. We should play an offensive look, but instead of playing wide, which clarke would expect as they defend a lead and pack the box, we should take advantage of their keying on dero to open up front space.

------------Frei------------
Cronin--Gomez--Garcia--Serioux
----------Robbo--------------
---Vitti------------Guevara--
----------Derosario-----------
-------Dichio------Gerba-------

Vitti and Amado can still drift wide when necessary, but in the meantime the Puerto Rico defense has to collapse centrally somewhat to properly double cover Dero, allowing much more space for balls in behind to Dichio and Gerba.

Meanwhile, we play a relatively flat back four, keying the distribution shorter than our normal head-man play, through vitti and guevara instead.

I'm not expecting much but will hope we can pull this off. Heart says 2-1 to us, head says 0-0 with them putting 10 men behind the ball and that Gaudette wanker time wasting worse than at BMO.

By the way, anyone know of a PR joint in Manhattan where I can watch this game?

If that was a question then please let me retort.

No. That's not our best lineup if everyone is healthy. You have 5 defenders out there. Six if you count Robbo, which is essentially how he plays. Please don't tell me that Wynne and Brennan are mids either. They're bad defenders yes, but they're worse midfielders.

isn't DeRo a USL killer (hat trick vs. MTL :p)

DeRo is a killer period. Big games is where he shines.

4 MLS Cups prove that.
Multiple MVPs.
The Hatrick in Montreal.
8 league goals on a TFC team that is as shaky as a parkinsons patient.

This season has only cemented DeRo as a great player.

I agree he should be playing an advanced role. Maybe behind a target man? Imagine Dichio knocking down balls for DeRo bury?

Also, Gerba's linking plays with DeRo have already made me excited, just a few games into their partnership.

Those 3 should be up front.

Barrett seems to do better on the wing.

For the first time, in the history of our club, we are entering a match tonight that could end in penalties. (Please don’t mention the Carlsberg Cup!)

Our apparent deficiencies from the spot are about to graduate from annoyance to horror.

I’m really hoping it doesn’t end PRI 0-1 TFC, with us being sent home on penalty kicks.

I say we put this out ...

------------- Frei -------------------
----Gomez* -- Garcia -- Serioux-------
------------ Robbo ------------------
---- Vitti ----Guevara-----Brennan---
-- De Ro ----- Dichio ------- Gerba --

*or Nana if he isn't hurt

Subs:
1.
Cronin for Robbo (about 70-75)
2.
OBW for Dichio (if it is raining and humid like some have said then this will be needed)
3a.
Wynne/Gomez for Gomez/Nana (you can figure out what i mean)
3b.
Barrett for Gerba (still thnk Gerba isn't up fitness wise to Winsper's methods yet)

a formation of 3-1-3-3 i think can push the offensive pace for us as well as i think our three best defenders at the back right now
(mainly because i haven`t put Marco in at all!)

I agree except Gomez for Garcia, and Wynne at FB...Garcia is FAR TOO SLOW to have him playing with only 3 at the back....

and Wynne sucks at marking or positioning

I'd rather have Garcia at back than Wynne

If anything I think the rain will make Garcia even slower than he already is. His marking also isn't amazing... a lot of the time he's standing by himself in the middle of the box with (supposedly) Wynne's man in open space. As a center back he should be taking responsibility for those stray strikers when Wynne's not tracking back quick enough (which is a lot of times)

Right now Garcia and Wynne are both liabilities on the field, but I'd much rather have Wynne who can make up his space on the field, than Garcia who just gets outpaced day in day out.

exactly....both have liabilities but Wynne has the pace to overcome his....sometimes....

i dunno. I think Garcia's marking and positioning is way better than Wynne.

it just don't help that Garcia has to try to cover for both fullback's mistakes, and he doesn't have enough pace to cover for them, so gets exposed

TFC backline as a whole lacks pace, so better to play more deep, and not get exposed by pace of PRI attackers

either way, if Robbo and Cronin can't clog the center midfield, this will be an ugly game

3-0 TFC. We usually do well in the rain.

So, if it goes to penalties, who takes them?

Gerba's penalty against River Plate looked very good, but I can't imagine he'd still be on the pitch after 120 mins.

If Guevara starts, I doubt he'd be fit enough for 120 either.

I'd say De Ro definitely, and I'd be reasonably confident with Barrett if he's still on, but after that?
Garcia? Brennan? Vitti was awful vs RP but you'd hope he could do better. Cronin? I could see Serioux absolutely smashing one in, but again, would he still be on the pitch?

Hopefully we can win before it comes to this.

^ the penalty question is a great one...

If the game is 1-1 late, and we're sitting back, I wonder if Gerba would be left out as the lone striker to ensure he's available for penalties...

As for who takes all of them, considering we're 1-for-6 (or something like that in MLS play) going to penalties isn't our best option - but its better than losing outright LOL...

I'm actually pretty excited for this game. Nothing to lose, so I expect us to use a very attacking formation, and I can't wait to see what results from it. Another Montreal, maybe?

Damn right!!! 4 - 1 !!!!!

4-strikers! Gerba / Dichio in the middle... Guevara / Barret on either side...

Frie will be a busy man, and deRo / Barret will run their asses off - but we should create alot of action... :)

4 strikers? We're down by one goal to a (admittedly well organised) USL side. this will not be another montreal scenario. Even then, when we had to win by 4, CC didn;t go too hell for leather with his starting line up.

I expect a mroe conservative approach, with more drastic measures later in the game if we don't make the breaktrhough. going out too hard and being hit on the counter to go 2-0 down would be a nightmare (despite the Montreal comeback).

on another note what would people rather choose iof they ahd to pick one - qualify for CL group stages or make the play offs? I'd take the play offs I think.

If it is pouring raid we got to get Amado on the field, our best chances will come from his freekicks and corners. Without him our corners are just painful to watch.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, but I can't for the life of me understand why no one on this team can take a proper free kick or corner kick. Are these guys not all professional? I mean, really, I love De Ro, but hitting the ball off of a one-man wall? Really? Really? REALLY? Really?

Good point, but the short corners against PR were killing me! If we are getting killed in the air that badly, put Dichio in the game!

if the away goals rule is in place don't we only need to win 2-1 really?

although i'd prefer a good old fashion FC Dallas wooping (6-0), Dichio with 5 goals

Hey Guys

I just heard that Danny is not with the team. He flew home after the New England game. He is not injured as he didn't play.... WTF!!!!!!

On the most important game of the year we are without our best striker... I think the writing is on the wall Danny is probably going to be cut IMO.

If this is true I say Fuck Mo Fuck Cummins and Fuck MLSE.

"A lot of people are writing us off again and we sometimes thrive in that," said TFC striker Danny Dichio, who came on as a late substitute on Wednesday and forced Gaudette to make a brilliant diving save on a header. "It's going to be a very difficult place to go but I still think we've got a very good chance."

I had heard 25-30, mostly RPC & U-Sector were expected but I heard that from TO based folk.

Unfortunately,I am not down on the Island and couldn't come up with the ca$h to make the trip from DC so I didn't get the chance to try to talk to any of them.

On at a least a few occasions online Islanders supporters tried to reach out to provide to arrange some hospitality and assist with logisitcs but I don't think that the offers were ever acted on (know one travelling to support ever got in touch with me).

They will have to show them on tv. You can't have a TFC match (even away) and do it justice without giving them a shout out and a little camera luv.
