Gilberto has contract cancelled by Tottenham

July 24, 2009

Brazilian defender Gilberto (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/profile?id=65539&cc=5901) has left Tottenham after his contract with the club was cancelled by mutual consent.

The 33-year-old arrived at Hertha Berlin in January 2008 but struggled to make an impact and only made 10 appearances.
We need a defender and we're talking a lot about a DP. He could probably last us 3 maybe 4 quality years and then a leadership role off the bench for the next 1 or 2 if everything goes well.

Thoughts?

contract was cancelled....33 years old...struggled to make an impact.

i don't know the details and haven't seen him play in a long time, but simply going by what's quoted there, that's not what I'd want to spend dp money on.

Old and wise player past his best, but can still help organise a defence and contribute a bit. He'd maybe be worth a go at 100-200 thousand, but then isn't that what we've got Garcia for?

Didn't he sign with Cruzeiro?

designated player rule was put in place to draw fans and sell jerseys, gilberto silva wont do that, and considering our owners are the greediest in the league, he would never be signed for dp money

"DP Money" can mean different things to different players.

To Beckham, it means $6.5M.

To Ljungberg, it means $1.3M

To Schelotto and Emilio it means about $750k.

exactly what im trying to get at, many would argue that schelotto has been a bigger asset to his club on the field that beckham and ljundberg, but his contract is considered dp as far as i know, and thats cuz he doesnt create the same revenue those other guys do with thier names

Hey, just read Panucci is still without a contract! I know he's 36 but I'd rather have him...a proven defender on a good/great team then a guy trying to make a team at 33. I am not a Roma fan nor a fan of Panucci but I have been watching him the last couple of years(knowing his contract was coming up) and I believe he'd be a great fit on our D for atleat 2-3 years.

Just my 2 cents!

my point for posting this was that a DP defender might be a good idea. we need a defender and if we can get a stellar one then why not?

defenders can play until they're 40, just look at Nesta

I've said it a few times, but I can't imagine a team using a DP spot on a defender. A single defender won't have the same impact on a club the way a top-notch attacking midfielder or striker can....it doesn't make sense spend $1 million (or whatever) on a defender when the same money can bring you 20 goals.

umm im pretty sure mo said he'd never sign a DP older than 32

FC Dallas used DP on Mexican defender Davino

then again, he was shit and got released after one year lol

I do think that a good commanding CB is worth just as much as a 15 goal striker.

MLS defenders are shit on average. if you can find someone who can help to create a tight defence, it'll do well on your playoff runs

^ I think that it comes down to a $1 million defender playing with 3 shit defenders is still apart of a shitty backline, whereas a $1 million striker playing along side a shit strike partner is still apart of a pretty good partnership upfront.

Davino wasn't a DP.....

Comically bad, epically inept. Next time he gets into a game it will be with a ticket.

If we spend the DP slot on Gilberto, I'll seriously debate flying down to Toronto just to slap Mo in the face. :D

I kid, but wow...NO!

Gilberto will NEVER be a DP in MLS. If he did come, he would get a contract between $250K to $330K.

I brought his name up about a month ago.

Surprised he's still available as free agent. You'd think some Dutch team would have picked him up by now

edit: he rejected PSV. looking to play outside Holland for 2 more years

LOL if he rejected PSV than we don't have much hope. Why aren't Celtic re-signing him?
