Rudi has requested that I publish the following letter that was sent to the Crew in April. It details the thinking behind the boycott of future road trips to Columbus.

They believe their restrictions on banners/flags/etc. will aid in the security problems, though. Which is pretty dumb.

SOOOOO WHAAAATT! its not a perfect world, this shit happens all the time, specially at a football event! So if our Boys have their first playoff game in Colombus, and possibly the CONCACAF group stage this year we wont go and support them. I dont agree, this is not curling. Thats just my opinion!

meaning, they chose the cop out and easy route

instead of actually getting a competent security, Crew FO hopes that ban on everything is going to solve the problem

all I know is that in most business, if you did something that pissed off 1000+ paying customers, you'd get fired

The Columbus newspaper said a Crew management type suggested that if the Toronto people don't like their cops they should bring their own. Take the RCMP musical ride, and make banners like, We Won the War of 1812, stay home..

The announcements of restrictions imply that by controlling opposing fans, problems can be contained. With that rationale, the opposing fans are to blame for the events in Columbus.

By saying its all our fault, they're indicating that the actions and measures they took were appropriate and justified. Which is bullshit.

I hope we meet the Crew in CONCACAF... It will be the roadtrip to end all roadtrips.

Yeah, I got The Kingpin to edit it first. :D

Seriously though, what is wrong with it (aside from some redundancies that I noticed this morning, the first time I've read it in months)? It's a professional-type letter sent (physically) to the Crew front office. I wasn't going to type it as if it was an MSN conversation.

That said, I don't really see any "big" words, so I honestly have no idea what you're on about.

I honestly wonder if this would have had a different outcome if the SGs involved were Americans instead of from Canada. I doubt the Crew FO and local Police forces would be as uncooperative. Not enough "my fellow Americans" in it.

Its a good letter, expresses our grievances in a professional manner and allows them an opportunity to respond / make changes.

Its a shame that the Crew dont need our ticket / beer / food money and the state of Ohio dont need our accomodation / travel / tourist money.

What would MLSE have to do with any of this?

When their fans come here, the TFC FO is top notch in dealing with them. They provide increased security in their section, and escort them through the stadium concourse to their buses.

We get nowhere near the same courtesy from the Crew FO, despite the fact that during the past two games we represented 15 to 20 per cent of the total attendance in their building.

TFC can talk to them and give them advice on how to handle away support professionally, and they have done so, but that's really all they can do. It is entirely the responsibility of the Crew and Crew Stadium to provide a safe environment for all paying fans, regardless of which team they happen to cheer for on the day.

The problem is, they think they won the War of 1812. The fact that the main goal of the war was to kick Great Britain out of North America is conveniently forgotten as they tend to focuss on other factors such as the British support of the Indians and the stoppage of US ships by British ships and the impressment of sailors.

Secondary issues.

They wanted the British out, it didn't happen!

Happy to oblige, and sorry to hear you live in Columbus, ...unfortunately somebody has to.

And a quick favour, perhaps even a hint as a reminder, could you do something about the other dozen or so of your colleagues who periodically venture north - we'd like those seats for our own. We here in Toronto have a high demand for tickets to support our team every game.

I'll be completely honest with you, I wrote it in all of 15 minutes, and barely touched it afterward (which is very rare for me).

I wanted everything (including the emotion of the event) to be fresh in my memory as I wrote it, but at the same time I was aware that I was writing a letter that was intended to convey some very important information to the Crew FO. Generally I'm a huge stickler for proofing (and re-proofing) anything I write, even these posts.

That all said, the only real error that I see of the ones you pointed out above is "singular" exit. I also shouldn't have used the term "of the opinion" so much, but as I said I wanted it to be raw and concise at the same time and that's honestly the way I think the language.

Either way, the points got through, in my opinion. Jack and Pedro agreed when they saw it, so that was good enough for me.

The reason they are banning drums is because "priviledges" need to be removed? WTF?

The reason they are banning flags is because they give "cover" to those lighting flares?

Who is this joker? Is he serious or did he decide to invest stuff on the spot when asked for a quote? The retards employed in this league are mindblowingly inept.

Mr. Soccer69 you are entitled to your feelings. No one is saying that you have to like us especially if "one of us" was rude to you.

You may notice that lots of people on the board don't like Columbus either. In other words, we don't like your sh*thole of a town b/c of the same reasons you use to justify your opinion of TFC fans.

Many of you were quite rude to us (especially to our visible minority brothers) when all we were trying to do was "watch the game."

apparently no tifos ban goes only for TFC fans, not any other away supporters

you guys sure you want to go to Columbus?

I agree with Yohan we should never go back to Columbus, regardless if its a CCL match...

those idiots know we cant stay away, which is why they want to take away our privileges of bringing drums and banners...

I say no more Columbus. It will hurt Columbus not us. Whos with me?

We'll go back for a playoff game or something of that nature and I am sure a compromise will be worked out.

The point of a supporters group is to be a good 12th man. If we are in a playoff or CCL game, you can bet your ass I will be there.

If it requires me to put some money into the local Columbus economy, I can get over that. It's supposed to be about our team, not the opposing fans.

it makes sense to me
if we can't have fun in their stadium, why the fuck would we let them at ours?

because it's not the Crew supporters at fault here, but Crew FO

We should start a petition.

Any Columbus fan that comes up here should leave their flags, banners and drums home until their FO wakes up and takes their heads out of their collective asses.

I doubt our FO will take this initiative on their own so we need to do it for them.

Don't use big words in front with Crew fans. Especially French ones. Their inbred asses don't have the brainpower to comprehend.

well, looks like only 100 to 150 toronto fans made the trip to Columbus

not that it really hurt Crew attendance as they still got 13500 ish, and this was with a really bad weather prediction (storm passed few hours before kick off)

It's AMAZING what people consider to be big words. But as Exiled said to me, consider your audience. So in essence, people here are supposed to "dumb things down" to ensure that the sensitivities of others are considered. It has been baffling since I began posting way back... Decent letter though.

Great letter Rudi... has anyone though of ccing it to MLS offices or the the soccer don himself?... just an idea but i think that in light of the new MLS 2.0 that anything causing a reduction in attendance anywhere would be something of importance to MLS.

I should have made it more clear

wait for Crew FO's response, after seeing lack of travelling TFC fans to Columbus last Sat.

perhaps they may be more willing to listen now (not that I'm having high hopes on this)

My gut tells me it will take more than 1 game, but you never know I guess.

Only a small group of TFC supporters went down there, but it was still more away support than they get for any other game except for weekend games vs. Chicago.

What stood out about the supporters that went (and this was pointed out to me at the pub) were their scarves. During the frequent camera pans of the Toronto few, there were no supporters scarves readily visible. All that were visible seemed to be the adidas team scarves.

Time to get past this and look forward. I'm tired of hearing about Columbus.

Makes me wonder if we could take 2000+ to Philly next year if someone in KKK f/o who's higher up might start asking questions...........

Then again I shouldn't really care if they notice or not, worrying about it is seconds of my day I'll never get back.
