Soccer fans unable to secure tickets for Toronto FC's friendly against Real Madrid, can at least watch world stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka practise with their Spanish team.
Toronto FC announced today that Real Madrid will hold an open practice Thursday, Aug. 6 , at BMO Field.
Tickets are $15 and go on sale to the public on Tuesday, July 28 at 2 p.m. There will be a presale opportunity for season subscribers and for fans on the Gold and Red wait lists.
The special presale begins Monday, July 27.
Toronto FC plays Real Madrid Friday, Aug. 7, at BMO. Tickets for the game sold out two weeks ago.
“We are very excited to have Real Madrid train, and allow us to open the gates to our fans,” said senior director of business operations Paul Beirne. “This is a great chance especially for the kids to come down, and see how Madrid runs their sessions. We’re delighted people will get another chance to see them during their short stay in Toronto.”
Gates will open at BMO Field at 6 p.m. with training slated to get underway at 7 p.m.

I was thinking a great TIFO would be to break into BMO the night before the match and acid the grass to say "against meaningless friendlies" So it wouldn't really effect anyones good times but still make a hell of a point on TV and to everyone there including the players on both sides.....anyone got giant quantities of lower grade acid?

They shut down the big acid producer years ago, now it's all about the crystal meth.

Brilliant move by MLSE. Charging $15 per person will help them recover some of the money they lost by handing out all those "loyalty discounts".

The nerve of them giving people an opportunity to see them practice for about a tenth of the ticket price to see them play.

you don't need acid to kill grass....

too much fertilizer....
steam/hotwater....
glyphosate (round up)...
goats.

although, my guess is that the grass will already be "dying" as it's temporary....just sod unfurled over the fieldturf....

Why wouldn't they charge $15, and then donate 100% to charity? That would be an excellent gesture.

I'm surprised they aren't charging for seats along the bus route from the hotel to BMO for the game

This is why MLSE is a money making machine. It is a good business move.

To those that think we can spend millions on a designated player without MLSE recovering their costs (through ticket price increases and other means)... think hard. They might not know how to build a winner but they know how to line their pockets.

The term goat?

I know there was a thread that called Jimmy the goat of the game... (apperantly someone thought it was his fault we didn't win)

Anyhow... to me goat = G.O.A.T or Greatest of All Time

Is there a particular significance to other people's usage of goat? or are we just grabbing funny looking animals?

07-24-2009, 04:24 PM
The term "goat" in sports is essentially short form for scapegoat, the guy who fucked up and caused a loss. Probably one of the more famous ones, in baseball at least, Bill Buckner.

Real Madrid will be holding an Open Practice, (http://mlsefans.com/index.cfm?n35167s3128c1458820t3127o31487) sponsored by OleOle.com on Thursday, August 6 at 7:00 p.m.

here's a thought...

an unpopular one because it's logical

they could just keep the practice closed, and then not have to pay for security.
I'm sure a large part of the money from the $10 or $15 entry fee is just to cover
the costs of the BMO field staff. There's no way in hell Madrid would let the gates
be opened without a security presence. They aren't going to risk having some
punter with a grudge running on the pitch and kneecapping their multi-million
dollar crybaby. How many security guards and ticket staff will be needed?
AND what's their combined salary? Yes it would be great if TFC FO covered
that cost, but it's not likely they'd do anything for a cash loss.

Well when the celebrities or TFC players or whoever shows up in these public places (malls, or wherever) sponsored by someone...they are getting paid for their time and by extension for the autographs they sign. My guess is that there will be RM memrobilia, signed stuff, shirts, all over the stadium for the actual game...and RM of course get a huge cut.

Except, the whole point of this trip for Madrid is PR - to increase their brand awareness. Other than that, there is no point in traveling this far for pre-season games when there are plenty of opponents closer to home.

Parkdale
07-25-2009, 10:35 AM

What I'm getting at, from their perspective a closed door practice makes no sense on a PR tour if they can host an open one.

-Sell tickets to cover the expense of running the stadium (gates, security, ,merch, ect).
-a lot more people see Madrid, CR9, ect. Brand awareness increases.
-a lot more people buy CR9 jersey's, all parties make a bunch more money.

Seems like a solid reason (from a business perspective) to me.
