Gerba flashes skills in Toronto FC debut
Cameroon-born striker scores on penalty, creates chances during regulation time
Dan Girard
It was a mean-nothing game, an international friendly sandwiched between a string of matches that will determine if Toronto FC's season is remembered as a good one.
But for a handful of members of the home side, last night's game against River Plate of Argentina was a chance to audition for more playing time when matches matter.

Reds come unstuck in the shootout
The Canadian Press
Ali Gerba hopes he showed enough in his Toronto FC debut to stay in the starting lineup.
The 27-year-old from Montreal scored in the shootout and had two great chances to put his team ahead in the first half, but it wasn’t enough as Argentina’s River Plate beat Toronto FC 4-3 on penalties to claim the Carlsberg Cup international friendly at BMO Field on Wednesday night.

The club trotted out two newcomers in a friendly against Argentina's River Plate on Wednesday night. The result was a familiar one.

Several positives for Reds in close defeat
By Mark Polishuk
TORONTO -- Toronto FC came up short on the scoreboard on Wednesday night, losing the Carlsberg Cup on penalty kicks in a friendly against Argentinean side River Plate. But the exhibition match might prove to be a victory in the long run for the Reds given that it allowed several reserves to get some playing time, and it gave two new members of the TFC strike force a chance to take the field without any pressure.

Reds dealt penalty-kick loss by River Plate
By Mark Polishuk
TORONTO -- Argentinean powerhouse River Plate added the Carlsberg Cup to its long list of trophies after a penalty-kick victory against Toronto FC in a Wednesday night friendly at BMO Field. After 90 minutes of scoreless play and a penalty kick shootout knotted 3-3 after the first five shooters, Gustavo Fernandez made no mistake by converting a goal on River's sixth attempt of the shootout. TFC defender Marco Velez needed to score to keep his team alive, but put his attempt over the net.

I didn't know Carlsberg Cup mattered so much. This dude make it sound like TFC just lost a major tourney and Gerba and White sucked beyond belief in their first game:facepalm:
