Carlsberg Cup friendly still holds importance
Most important game of season for some TFC players
By Mark Polishuk
TORONTO -- Wednesday night's Carlsberg Cup friendly against River Plate might not impact the MLS standings, but for some Toronto FC players, it is the most important game of the season for the simple reason that they'll actually get to play. TFC interim head coach Chris Cummins has said that he'll be limiting the minutes of his usual starting XI on Wednesday, thus opening the door for some of the reserves to get on the pitch.

TFC gets an injection
Gerba, White will play in friendly
By STEVEN SANDOR

River Plate has a proud history, but the club is just a shadow of what it used to be.
So, tonight's friendly against the Argentine side offers TFC the perfect time to bring two new strikers into the fold.
Coach Chris Cummins has two massive games following the River friendly. TFC visits its most-heated rival, the Columbus Crew, on Saturday, then is home next Wednesday for the first half of its CONCACAF Champions League qualifier against the Puerto Rico Islanders -- maybe the most important fixture TFC has played so far in its short history.

Samsung Scouting Report - River Plate
Toronto FC face River Plate in the Carlsberg Cup on Wednesday

Toronto FC braces for the visit of River Plate for the Carlsberg Cup on Wednesday. Los Millonarios are one of the most storied clubs in the world and have only a handful of rivals who can come close to matching their rich history in the Americas. The Argentine giants last hoisted silverware in 2008 when they won the Torneo Clausura (closing tournament) of the 2007-08 season. In total, River owns 33 First Division titles in Argentina, a domestic record.

Pardon my ignorance...

For friendlies such as the River Plate match do regular FIFA substitution rules exist (3 substitutions from a bench of 7 or 8 players) or can the clubs make/use more players if they so choose?

There are usually unlimited substitutions in these games, or at least limited by the size of the bench. But teams may dress more than the normal 18.

This doesn't really belong here. But I refuse to start another thread about Becky.
David Beckham ready to defy LA Galaxy to play England friendly

David Beckham is adamant that he is available for England's friendly against Holland next month despite suggestions from the Los Angeles Galaxy that they do not want him to play.
