Mornin,

Battle of top teams in MLS this weekend
Reds look to avenge loss to Houston earlier this season
MLS.com
Fresh off a victory in San Jose that moved them to the top of the Eastern Conference table, Toronto FC return home for a quick stop to take on the best in the Western Conference, MLS overall leaders Houston Dynamo. The Reds have won three of their last four, this their only BMO Field appearance in a five-game span. The shorthanded Dynamo have just one win in their last four after a five-game winning streak. The teams have met already this season, Houston rolling to a comprehensive 3-0 victory at Robertson Stadium.

Barrett happy to be finding form
Striker has now scored four MLS goals this season
By Mark Polishuk
TORONTO -- Chad Barrett has been a target for some criticism in Toronto this season, as the striker's season-long finishing problems had resulted in just two goals through his first 15 games. And, true to form, even after Barrett scored a brace in Toronto FC's 3-1 win against the Earthquakes in San Jose last Saturday, his finishing prowess still received some barbs -- though of a slightly more good-natured variety.

White nears debut for Toronto FC
Striker was drafted No. 4 in 2009 MLS SuperDraft, hasn't played due to ACL tear
By Mark Polishuk
TORONTO -- When Toronto FC conclude their morning training sessions, O'Brian White is still going. As other players leave the pitch to do some gym work or to grab a bite in the change room, White can be found at one of the end of the field in a group that includes strength and conditioning coach Paul Winsper, athletic therapist Carmelo Lobue and perhaps one or two other players getting in a bit of extra work themselves or just helping put their rookie teammate through his paces.

Barrett discovers scoring touch
Striker breaks out of early-season slump just as competition for jobs starts to heat up
Daniel Girard
Toronto FC striker Chad Barrett is not known as a troublesome sort of guy. But he's causing some headaches for his boss, Chris Cummins.
And the coach couldn't be happier.
Barrett, maligned for much of the first half of the Major League Soccer season, had his best game in a TFC jersey last Saturday, netting a pair of goals in a 3-1 victory in San Jose and bagging player-of-the-week honours for the first time in his five-year career.

Time off helped Toronto FC's Barrett
'I came back with a huge smile on my face and it's been there since'
John Molinaro
It's a right of passage for students who are about to go away to school for the first time. But in Chad Barrett's case, a summer trip proved to be the perfect tonic for his scoring woes.
Having gone eight consecutive Major League Soccer games without a goal, Barrett finally found the back of the net last weekend, scoring twice in Toronto's 3-1 road win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Gerba feeling at home with Canada
THE CANADIAN PRESS
PHILADELPHIA -- Ali Gerba has always been a soccer nomad, looking for a home. He seems to have found it with the Canadian national team and hopes Toronto FC will be an equally comfortable fit.
It's been a long road getting there for the 27-year-old from Montreal.
He is Canada's top gun at the Gold Cup with two goals in three games heading into Saturday's quarter-final with Honduras (Rogers Sportsnet, 5 p.m. ET).

Canada soccer all Hart
By STEVEN SANDOR
Canadian national team coach Stephen Hart is keeping his plans for tomorrow's Gold Cup quarterfinal match against Honduras awfully close to his vest.
He doesn't want the Hondurans to have idea of who he plans to start or what formation he's going to use.
Will Canada play a 4-4-2 in Philadelphia? Or will forward Ali Gerba, who scored winning goals in two group-stage matches, be alone up front?
"We have come up with something we like -- for the first half, anyway," said Hart, giving nothing away.

Live and learn
TFC to take lessons from loss and turn tables on Houston
By FRANK ZICARELLI (frank.zicarelli@sunmedia.ca)
Adrian Serioux is serious when he says he has yet to see the video evidence of Toronto FC's most recent game against the Houston Dynamo.
When a team gets spanked 3-0 and yields all three goals in the blink of an eye, Serioux feels no need to review the carnage.
The scars, afterall, from Toronto's May 30 visit to Texas are so fresh that the defender doesn't require any reminders.

So, I guess MLS commissioner Don Garber really does read that Twitter thing.
Last week, Houston Dynamo player Brian Ching reacted to a blown call during a Dynamo v Seattle Sounders game by doing what any reasonable person does today - he lashed out on Twitter. Ching, who was not at the game, but away on international duty, loaded up the internets and blasted this out to his followers:

"Ref in Seattle just cheated the dynamo. What a joke. Not even close. Ref is a cheat."

Ching followed it up the next day by issuing an apology, once again through Twitter. Twice in fact. But that was not good enough for those at MLS head office, as yesterday they levied the standard $500 fine for abuse of an official.
Or in this case Twitterabuse of an official - which, for the offending tweet, works out to about $7 a character ($6 if you count the spaces.)

MLS officiating being poor? What else is new?

He has a point though. I don't believe the ball ever did cross the line.

Nice to see lots of TFC press! And good Canada press!

Saw this on BBC's rumor page this morning.

"Hodgson is also considering a move for Columbia international forward Fredy Montero who plays for Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders. (Daily Star)"

It's his editors I have a beef with. When TFC play on the road, they often just use the wire service reports which give you the bare bones story but no quotes from our players or any particular insight into things a local reporter would include if it were a home game.

I know the newspapaer business is affected by the economy, but how expensive can it be to simply hire a freelance reporter in an away-game city to provide a proper story? $100? We deserve that.

well, I guess Chi is looking for a striker now, or an attacking midfielder

I think if you're on a long term disabled list, your salary comes off the cap. McBridge maekes 350k per year. 175k can net you a very competent player

i don't know about that.. the MLS regs say:

(J) SEASON-ENDING INJURY REPLACEMENTS
A team with a player lost to a season-ending injury can replace that player on its roster, while remaining responsible for the full amount of the injured player's salary

(K) SHORT-TERM INJURY REPLACEMENTS
A team with a player who has a short-term injury can replace that player on its roster, while remaining responsible for the full amount of the injured player's salary.

since the league pays the salaries, I'm assuming "responsible" means it still counts against the cap. The rules also imply this as well -- any replacement player can be brought in provided the team has budget space

sounds like chicago is fucked.

last time we had Sutton on DL, didn't his roster spot and salary got freed up?

damn confusing MLS rules! ARGH!
