Is that for real? haha! I'm just curious to know how in the hell he would ever come into possession of a Columbus Crew branded soccer ball in the first place.

Did he go to a Gold Cup match?

The Crew were in Washington today to meet the President...

Its a long standing tradition that the President welcomes Champions to Washington for a meet & greet - but to be honest, I didn't know MLS was part of that...

Good for the league to be treated the same as NHL, MLB, NBA, NFL etc by the President...

Politics aside, it is nice to have a US President that tries to acknowledge and embrace soccer, especially when talking to world leaders.

Its been so long since a Canadian team won anything, I don't know if the President brings them down...

Anyone remember if the Jays were at the White House when they won the World Series back-to-back, back in the day...???

Obama's approval numbers are plummeting. But that would be true for any sitting president during tough economic times. He'll have to turn things around fast before people turn on him the way they did Bush due to the Iraq war. War is one thing, but when people stay unemployed they get very, very angry.

Obama was apparently recently presented with a signed brazil shirt after the confed cup where brazil beat the us after being 2-0 down. i read that he didn't look very impressed, but he's got to be happier with a signed brazil shirt than he has with a KK branded ball, otherwise he has no hope as a world leader, none...

Aside from just the WH visits though, I've heard him mention he wants to get the US another World Cup, and apparently he mentioned to Brazil's President (?) this past week that the USMNT won't be conceding a two goal lead to them again.

And of course, there was the previous hullabaloo about him supposedly being a West Ham supporter, though my guess is that was bullshit.

I'd love to know if he's actually a soccer fan though.

I was just having a laugh, but it's an exageration of what is essentially true. Man U are (by far) the biggest club in the world, and they're in a city of about a half million people, and atleast half those people hate them.

Hitcho

^ it's not bullshit, and it's a generally accepted fact that at least 90% of man utd fans have never been to manchester let alone old trafford. it's nothing to do with mancuians, it's the man utd cafes they have in places like singapore and the string of places they are planning on opening up in india. utd fans get riled by that statistic, but i never understood why. it's probablt a similar amount for clubs like real madrid, and the game day fans can do nothing about it, so why do they care?

anyway, i call non-bullshit on this. i'm sure i even saw it acknowledged by the club in a documentary once too, when they were talking about their worldwide marketing etc.

Half a million? You make it sound like Hamilton or something.

The city is huge, you might draw population figures from the official delineated 'city' but in the real world the figure is closer to 3 million, maybe 5 if you're willing to include all the surrounding urban areas that have the word 'Manchester' in their name.

Manchester is the second largest city in England. It's the 16th largest city in Europe.

It would be easy to come up with a metroplex definition of Manchester that would be 4-5 million people (but Exiled, horrors, that might include Liverpool!)

Yes, and that's why its very common for people in say...Stockport or Prestwich to support their local club in addition to a larger EPL team.

Some people in Scotland I know support both a local club in addition to Rangers or Celtic AND usually have an English club they follow.

It varies, really. My friend Graeme was a Rangers Supporter and he also followed Chelsea. I'd say watched around the same number of live games at both Ibrox and Stamford Bridge. Another friend kinda supported Hibs but was more a Liverpool guy and watched loads of games at Anfield.

Myself, I casually watched Edinburgh City, followed Manchester United quite a bit, but still have Hibs as my most favourite team out of all of them.

A team in Scotland and a team in England I understand completely (it's not unlike me liking TFC and Leeds). The issue is teams in the same association, more specifically living in a subburb of Manchester and following the local team, and also following Man U or City.

Brian Mulroney had the Blue Jays up at Parliament Hill in '92 after they won the World Series. I remember many puckheads were indignant about not extending the same courtesy for Canadian based NHL teams that won the Stanley Cup.

This White House tradition started under Reagan, and has carried on today. Obama seems to have taken it to a different level by inviting some of his hometown Chicago teams, the Bulls and the White Sox, to the WH.

IMHO, these White House invites are nothing but opprotunistic photo ops. Someone should just put an end to them.
