There will be a two-leg preliminary round for 16 clubs, with the 8 winners advancing to a group stage. The other 8 teams will be seeded and begin the competition directly in the group stage. The winners of the preliminary round and the seeded clubs will play in the group stage in four groups of four, with each team playing the others in its group twice, both home and away. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout stages, which will consist of home-and-away elimination. The finals, in late April, will also be two-legged, home-and-away.

1. Pachuca did not qualify

3. The Canadian team is not seeded. They have to go thru the preliminary round to qualify for the group stage.

I'll take it for granted that TFC will be Canada's representative. I'm pumped for this tournament! I wish I was more familiar with many of the Central American and Carribean teams but that will happen over time. Barring a complete letdown, I fully expect TFC to qualify for the next few years until Montreal and Vancouver are promoted and the playing field is level...

Do the MLS teams get a pass on the 1st round? So, what happens next year if we win the league and qualify by winning Canada as well? Do we then qualify twice? I assume if this happens the 2nd place team (Vancouver/Montreal) would get in...

2 of them do. The MLS Cup champ and the Supporters Shield winner gets the bye to the second round.

Honestly, if TFC wins either one, Canada's rep should go straight to the group stages. A fitting penalty for the USA I reckon if we win their league...and damnit, it's gonna fucking happen! :canada:

Something to mention from the Canadian Championship match between the Montreal Impact and Toronto FC on May 27. During the Broadcast it was stated that for the preliminary round draw, the 16 teams will be places into two pots for the draw.
Pot A: Mexico3, MExico4, USA3, USA4, Canada, Honduras2, Costa rica2, Panama1
Pot B: Guatamala2, El Salvador 2, Panama 2, Belize, Nicaragua, CFU 1, 2, 3,

So TFC (if they end up winning Canada cup) will not play against a Mexican or American team in preliminary round.

It would be strange if we win the league, but qualify by beating Vancouver/Montreal and then we DON'T get a pass on the 1st round. I would hope that something would happen there to fix that issue.

biggest suprise for me is that probably the 2 biggest Clubs in Mexico (Chivas, and club America) didnt qualify for Champions League. As well as Pachuca who in recent years have been the most sucessful Mexican team winning many domestic and International Cups.

What's confusing me, is that the american teams have been decided already,

Arent the berths dependent on this seasons standing?

For some reason the seeds for Honduras an Guatemala have not been listed on the Wiki yet. Anyone know anything about that?

HONDURAS: The champions of the Torneos Apertura and Clausura qualify to the Champions League. If a team wins both tournaments (Apertura & Clausura) they automatically take the HON1 spot, while the HON2 place goes to the team with the next best overall record in the regular season standings from the Torneo Clausura. If a different champion is crowned in each tournament (Apertura, Clausura) then a two-game playoff will determine HON1 and HON2. CD Marathon has secured their place in the 2008-2009 CONCACAF Champions League™ after claiming the Torneo de Apertura 2007.

Honduras Qualifiers
HON1: Playoff Winner, champion of Torneo Apertura vs. champion of Torneo Clausura, or if applicable, the champion of both season tournaments
HON2: Playoff Runner-up, champion of Torneo Apertura vs. champion of Torneo Clausura or if applicable, the second place team in the Torneo Clausura if same champion for both Apertura and Clausura
(CD Marathon qualified as Torneo Apertura Winner)

GUATEMALA: The champions of the Torneos Apertura and Clausura qualify to the Champions League. If a team wins both tournaments (Apertura & Clausura) they automatically take the GUA1 spot, while the GUA2 place goes to the team with the next best overall record in the regular season standings from the Torneo Clausura. If a different champion is crowned in each tournament (Apertura, Clausura) then a two-game playoff will determine GUA1 and GUA2. Deportivo Jalapa qualified for the 2008-2009 CONCACAF Champions League™ after winning the Torneo Apertura 2007.

Guatemala Qualifiers
GUA1: Playoff Winner, champion of Torneo Apertura vs. champion of Torneo Clausura, or if applicable, the champion of both season tournaments
GUA2: Playoff Runner-up, champion of Torneo Apertura vs. champion of Torneo Clausura, or if applicable, the second place team in the Torneo Clausura if same champion for both Apertura and Clausura
(Deportivo Jalapa qualified as Torneo Apertura Winner)

Yes, those are the teams participating, but one from each country is supposed to get seeded directly into the Group Stage, and that hasn't been listed yet:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CONCACAF_Champions_League_2008-09#Format

So I was wondering if anyone knew which teams get seeded and which have to play in the prelims.

see my post just above yours

it has to do with the fact that the apertura and clausura winners were different.. therefore a playoff has to be played between the two to determine slot 1 (seeded) v slot 2 (prelims)

Joe Public is owned by that corrupt blatherskite, Jack Warner, the oily FIFA VP whose family was deeply implicated in ticket acquisition and scalping scandals for the last World Cup.

He also has a big say in who runs T&T's FA and has a strong hand to play in government elections.

Still want to support his team?

I'd find it even funnier if they played in Lee Marvin Stadium and we got to make all sorts of Dirty Dozen jokes.

I am a little surprised that all the CFU teams are in the game group for the prelim. round.

And while Pumas support might look threatening, the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City is really not that intimidating a place. It's a very wide, shallow bowl built for track and field and other sports. The fans are practically in the next area code.

Now Toluca, that's a hellhole of a bandbox, and at high altitude. As for bigger stadiums, the Azteca in MC and the Jalisco stadium in Guadalajara can be quite intimidating when full. You could get Club America or Chivas Guadalajara, respectively, in those parks.

Cruz Azul's stadium, where Atlante used to play, would also be an interesting venue if full. Pretty tight and steep. It's also next to the city bullring which should make you wary of anything on the hot dog vendors carts.

Thanks for the info!

It would be strange if we win the league, but qualify by beating Vancouver/Montreal and then we DON'T get a pass on the 1st round. I would hope that something would happen there to fix that issue.

I think the whole problem is that it is counrty represented and not league. If it were by league then we would be able to go through the MLS. I think the MLS is only league in the CONCACAF where 2 countries are involved.
In the long run I think it's better this way. In some way if forces the CSA to at least try and build up the domestic aspect of Canadian soccer to the point where more teams can come in the NCC and make it into a proper Canadian Champions League.

no because Champions League starts the end of August, while this years standings dont end untill November.

So who ever finnishes the top 2 spots of the MLS season this year, plus the MLS Cup winner of this year and the US Open Cup Champion will qualify for next years Champions League.

if Canada didnt have its own slot and we had to qualify through MLS it would be much harder. And we also wouldnt get to play meanningful games vs Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps. Having Toronto enter through Canada is good for us, and the rest of Canada. My hope is in the next few years they add some more Canadian teams in this Canada Cup to see who makes it to Champions League. It really will create more interrest across Canada, and help create more money for smaller Canadian soccer teams.

1. Pachuca did not qualify

2. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CONCACAF_Champions_League_2008-09

3. The Canadian team is not seeded. They have to go thru the preliminary round to qualify for the group stage.

I'm surprised that Pachuca didn't earn automatic qualification by winning the final CONCACAF Champions' Cup...

Ah yes, thank you. I hadn't seen your post when I posted the question again.

So a two-game playoff. Wow -- that's actually a lot to go through just to get seeded or not.

And then we can field a $2m squad against squads of $10m players.

I could see the CSL and the PCSL having a tournament to see who would send one club to make the tournament an even 4 clubs. Then after awhile I could see the CC expanding the format to include more clubs....baby steps.

Nothing like that to get MLS to raise the salary cap...
