Garcia gets good feel for Toronto's game
PAUL ATTFIELD
Entering the dressing room at halftime last Saturday, Toronto FC's newest acquisition must have wondered what all the fuss was about.
Nick Garcia's first 45 minutes in TFC red had been a virtual walk in the park. The home side had converted two of its five shots (albeit at the second time of asking in both cases) in taking a 2-0 lead through Sam Cronin and Danny Dichio, while the New York Red Bulls had never seriously threatened (showing why they had failed to score an away goal all season) despite six shots to their name.

Groundbreaking week for TFC
GARETH WHEELER (gareth.wheeler@suntv.canoe.ca)
Toronto FC moved up its midseason state-of-the-union to last Thursday, giving the club's upper brass a chance to clear the air with certain media members after a less-than-stellar week.
The round-table included everything from the business operations to the on-field product.
You've got to give Mo Johnston and Co., credit -- they answered the tough questions in a straight-up manner. And agree with him or not, the fiery Scot is steadfast in his belief in the team he has assembled.

Whitecaps almost a lock to advance
Ben Rycroft (http://www.metronews.ca/toronto/columnist/179696--just-soccer-by-ben-rycroft)
Barring any miracles this Thursday, the Vancouver Whitecaps should advance to the CONCACAF Champions League. The only way they wouldn’t, would be if the Montreal Impact were to fall on their faces and allow Toronto FC to four or more goals.
Toronto has only scored four goals once in its short history. And Montreal has only allowed four or more goals once in the last three years. So, as I said, barring any miracles, Vancouver will be moving on.

Danny D has set up his retirement position:

TORONTO FC STAR JOINS THORNHILL SOCCER CLUB
Danny Dichio becomes Technical Director at Local Soccer Club
June 13, 2009
Thornhill, Ontario - The Thornhill Soccer Club has appointed acclaimed soccer star Danny Dichio as its new Technical Director. As Toronto FC’s star striker, Danny has agreed to offer his extensive experience as both prolific goal-scorer and internationally certified coach to the Thornhill Soccer Club. In assuming the role of Technical Director, Danny will focus on improving technical ability amongst players and coaches. He will update and improve training techniques for the Club’s House League and Competitive teams by holding training sessions and coach workshops for local squads.
Danny will also serve as Chief Scout for the Club.

Nice find, Oldtimer.

I was really hoping that we could start a letter writing campaign or other to convince Double D to stay on 1 more year. Does this news mean that he has made a commitment to a full time position next year or are there some options to keep him around as a striker next season?

I guess to put the question more simply: Is the door absolutely closed to another year with team?

If his stats stay as they are at the end of the season, I would strongly argue that we need to organise a Stay for one more, Danny campaign.

This is definitely not a job that will allow him to retire... The amount he is being paid is very low - less than many other technical directors in the area. My understanding is that this is very much a part time role so that he can still have plenty of time to focus on TFC.

He does a great job with the kids and will definitely help Thornhill.

Toronto FC set out on Mission: Improbable
Ben Rycroft (http://www.metronews.ca/toronto/columnist/179696--just-soccer-by-ben-rycroft)

A near impossible task lies before Toronto FC as they head to Montreal Thursday.

Having lost to the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 in an everything-should-be-fine-as-long-as-you-don’t-lose-2-0-to-the-Whitecaps situation, Toronto must now defeat the Montreal Impact by four or more goals in order to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.

This is Thornhill Thunder Soccer Club we're talking about???

I counted about 60 house league youth teams:

http://www.itsportnet.com/leagues/6961/documents/2009YouthGroups.pdf

Plus maybe 10 rep teams... Not sure on the adult side how many teams there are.

My kid is part of this organization and I was part of setting up the budget for one of the rep teams. If he is making $100k I'm not sure who's paying...

Interesting trade

Noonan hasn't quite worked out for the Crew, being injury ridden and never quite adapted to Columbus system. The thing is, the Crew are very thin in striker/attacking midfielder depth wise, so unless the Crew got someone lined up to sign, it's an interesting move.

He's got 150k salary I think too.

1st round pick might be too much to pay for Noonan, despite his goodpast MLS experience

Uh, I've got a couple of friends who've been directors for amateur soccer, and they say anyone who thinks they're getting 80K a year for "technical director" is kidding themselves. The president of the whole league doesn't get 80k.

This is usually a relatively low-paying job coupled with travel expenses. Given that DD already made his money before he even moved to Canada, money likely isn't a concern. He's probably doing it to a) work with his kids and b) get his remaining certificates.

TORONTO -- Danny Dichio took a few giant strides toward the noisiest corner of BMO Field, turned his hand as if to crank up the volume control and swiftly booted the corner flag off its base.
And with that, Toronto FC's troubling June swoon was on its way out the door.
Dichio's goal in last night's 2-1 nail-biting win over the last-place New York Red Bulls doesn't end all the questions about this club's viability for playoff contention, as Toronto wavered at the end. But it does bring a three-game Major League Soccer/Nutrilite Canadian Championship losing streak to an end and put them back in the horse race for first place in the East with a 5-5-4 mark.
And Dichio, a favourite son since scoring the first goal in franchise history three years ago, couldn't help but be aware of the rift that developed between management and fans during the slump about the scheduling of friendlies and the issue of real grass at BMO. Thus a little fence-mending with the denizens in the south-east section after he struck.
As dazed Bulls goalie Danny Cepero dragged himself up after Dichio buried a Pablo Vitti breakaway save, he looked right at a giant banner that unfurled to read "Danny Says Eat It." It was Dichio's third goal of the season.

Nice, KD.
