Baseball Manager Tony LaRussa Sues Twitter

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gqd0f6CoYrMnmbQdeH0zrqdIVpFgD98KHBQ01

The lawsuit claims that someone created a false account under La Russa's name and posted updates, known as "tweets," that gave the false impression that the comments came from La Russa. The suit said the comments were "derogatory and demeaning" and damaged La Russa's trademark rights.

I can guarantee you I did not make this... I first found it from re-tweets by http://twitter.com/callitfootball who is the writer for TFC stuff in metronews.ca, but nice try.

If this is a fake, it was probably someone from these boards (hence the red patch comment). Just as a word of warning, if someone did this, you may get more than you bargained for (MLSE probably has a few lawyers in their employ).

Oh, I agree it's funny, I'm just glad I'm not the one who did it. As Wagner said, there is precedent, and when dealing with a company (or the representative of that company) and saying things that can impact real financials (talking about a revenue generating event with false information) you can get SCREWED financially. Canada might not be big on punitive damages, but we seem to do fine with compensatory damages (and a good arguement could be made here).

When I first read it I thought his last update said that they would be on the FIELD, not the stands... That is why I questioned the legitimacy of it (because the other updates weren't all that bad), but yea, it's obviously fake.

The "Are you happy now Red Patch?" comment seems to point to someone that reads these boards though.

If you're someone famous or someone in the public eye (pro sports, on air talent) - its probably a good idea to make a bunch of twitter accounts with your name, and variations of it (using all your e-mail addresses), to avoid things like this happening...

Yah, great move for La Russa to sue a company that doesn't make any money. What a douche bag.

There is no case to be made against Twitter or the person who posts as another individual. It's a publicity stunt by La Russa because the poster made comments about the Cardinals player that died earlier this year.

What do you mean by publicity "stunt?" It is possible that because LaRussa knew the player who died he thought the phony twitter was in bad taste - and, of course, done anonymously.

LaRussa would have preferred to punch the little twat who did it the face.

yeah, and I think Mo would know he played for Celtic then Rangers ... it may seem minor but I think you'd name the teams in order

geeez ... a least this person could do a little research before attempting a prank

45 mins of the #1'st team WAGS? You put it that way maybe the high price for these tickets is worth it. But now that Ronaldo is comming its may end up looking like a gay pride parade in the section

Twitter does not have a revenue source (yet) - they do NOT make any money. Do some research - you'll be surprised.

Here's one of many articles you can find on the subjet: http://weakonomics.com/2009/04/07/how-twitter-makes-money/

You hit the nail on the head - he filed the lawsuit not to win but to make sure everyone out there knew it wasn't him.
