Cristiano Ronaldo to Toronto FC

It will change few of the minds who are set against going to the Real Madrid friendly in Toronto Aug. 7, but it would appear that Cristiano Ronaldo has taken another step towards joining the Spanish giant.

Fresh off the signing of Brazil's Kaka, it was widely reported (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2009/06/ronaldo_in_america.html?wprss=soccerinsider)yester day that Ronaldo had met with Real Madrid doctors in L.A. - for what is perceived to be a physical assessment ahead of the international transfer window opening in a few weeks.

If the transfer were to happen and Ronaldo were to play (far from even likely, teams tend to rest stars for friendlies like the one against Toronto and they'll be playing in DC just days later) it would dramatically increase the appeal to European football fans who tend to turn up their nose at MLS.

Whether it is the level of play in MLS not being the world's highest, or just a simple euro-snob thing, those who tune into the EPL but tune out MLS, represent a large, untapped market as far as attracting fans to Toronto FC games.
This friendly with Real Madrid has angered the loyal TFC supporter groups on a lot of levels (ticket prices, re-scheduling, grass) but, like it or not, with Europe's biggest club and some of it's biggest stars coming to Toronto, it's going to extend soccer's reach into the community here on another level.
Whether those who the team reach out to stick around after Europe has gone back to Europe, remains to be seen.
Cheers

This is false advertising.

They should be sanctioned. The article should be pulled. Ben Rycroft is a Paul Beirne mouth piece.

Ronaldo isn't fit.

This is just intentional mis-information to sell tickets.

How do all the It's called footbal people (who are web people) get press credentials? and all the other web people get theirs pulled?

You know...Ben Knight...SweetOwnGoal...all of those "journos"

Nothing personal but this is being discussed in 3 other threads at this time. Not to mention the offensive title. Aaaaannnd, Ronaldo isn't fit, as already mentionned.

Ben Knight worked for the Globe, and was one of the best soccer voices in the city.
Duane R. is a web guy, so I'm not sure how he has gotten credentials.
Ben Rycroft writes for MetroNews (which prints the paper 'metro') so he's not just a web guy.

and I don't think Duane R actually has press credentials. He's just a blogger with an opinion.

This is the key word - I could write a blog/fanzine - does that get me credentials?

It's precissely because they don't have press credentials, and are not constrained by resources, or having to appeal to the lowest common denominator, that they do proper footy reporting. IMHO!

did you ever work for accredited media and your job was to cover the TC?
Ben K. did. Ben R still does. Duane did not, and he doesn't have press credentials (I'm pretty sure anyway)

I disagree, they are at times more or less fans vs. objective. What seems to be missing is some fun - that's what we had before MLSE/TFC wanted to launch the feces bucket called TFC TV.

Yes - No - and past tense.

Nah, we got a better player coming in, GERBA!!!

I wonder if players will want to sign for TFC just to play real madrid in the friendly.

I like the (I'm pretty sure anyway) disclaimer. Safety first!

I've asked around and heard a different opinion/answer on the press credentials thing.

Look. I'm all for people doing their job. I understand 100% that MLSE/TFC is a business, unfortunately they aren't doing this for the love of the game...I get that.

My main personality failure is I can not accept being mis-lead or lied to.

It's becoming increasingly obvious, that the success of TFC in the stands, is a house of cards built on lies and moles.

All for one...they sold us.

It just sucks that we find out now that the experiential marketing has worked.

Harder to walk away...so they better be prepared for people getting pissed and fighting for what they have been led to believe is part theirs.

Yes - No - and past tense.

you were answering the first question?

I know your take on this, and agree that some of the best TFC coverage came from non-accredited sources (like GoTFC). I think it's a shame they lost access, but that's an issue from years ago that probably wont change. Some people still do quality coverage without any permission (like the majority of 'It's Called Football' which is strictly independent)

Yeah because we need 5 newspapers to report the exact same score every week and little else that interests footy fans. Where else can TFC fans read or hear about players, tactics, MLS issues, coaching challenges, and other interesting information and opinion regarding their team?

Thank god for bloggers and other new media adopters that provide substantive information on the issues fans care most about.

people in MLSE are doing it as a job, we all know that, but I honestly believe that guys like Ben Knight (and the other Ben and Duane) are doing it because they love the game. Certainly it doens't look like they're getting rich off it anytime soon.

If the transfer were to happen and Ronaldo were to play (far from even likely, teams tend to rest stars for friendlies like the one against Toronto and they'll be playing in DC just days later)

In a contract that includes the placement of temporary grass and without doubt a huge appearance fee you'd have to be crazy to think MLSE haven't got some guarantees of who will make appearances on the pitch.
My best guess is it will be a game with unlimited substitutions allowing RM to play the required first team players as specified by the contract and then sub them off once the specified obligation has been reached, Having said that I have to note that neither Kaka nor Ronaldo were under contract to RM at the time of the announcement of the match and therefore RM may well not be obliged to play them.

It was a combination of the rifle post and this one in the news thread

Ronaldo coming?

Time to dust off the old sniper rifle I guess.

Anyone want to hang out with me atop the food building? I'll bring sandwiches.

Anyways...really not a big deal. I know it was a joke. Just saying, it was a bit much. I personally don't joke about killing anybody with a sniper rifle from a rooftop.
