Johnston finally forced to shore up his back end
LANCE HORNBY (lance.hornby@sunmedia.ca)
Mo Johnston had no choice but to make a move to help his depleted back line this week.
Under fire in some quarters for not acting sooner this season to improve depth, Toronto FC's director of soccer acquired veteran Major League Soccer defender Nick Garcia from the San Jose Earthquakes yesterday, as well as the rights to Canadian forward Ali Gerba, for a third-round draft pick in next year's draft.

Toronto FC Media Relations
Toronto FC announced Tuesday that they have acquired defender Nick Garcia from the San Jose Earthquakes, along with the discovery rights to Canadian forward Ali Gerba. In exchange, San Jose receives Toronto's 3rd round selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. As per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. To make room on the roster for Garcia, Toronto FC goalkeeper Greg Sutton has been released.

Reds get even stronger in the middle
Acquisition of Garcia adds to options at central defence
TORONTO -- Toronto FC began the season with a starting back line of Marvell Wynne, Adrian Serioux, Kevin Harmse and Jim Brennan. On Saturday against New York, Serioux might be the only active member of a defense corps that has undergone some major personnel changes in just a few days.

Brennan doubtful for Red Bulls clash
Captain could miss match at BMO Field Saturday
Toronto FC could be without Captain Jim Brennan for Saturday's match against New York Red Bulls at BMO Field (kick off 8:00 p.m. live on Rogers Sportsnet). Brennan was forced off with an ankle injury during the defeat to LA Galaxy and Coach Chris Cummins isn't hopeful of having the left back available.

Hard-luck Sutts
Gerry Dobson
Even when it became apparent in the preseason that rookie Stefan Frei would be installed as Toronto FC's starting goalkeeper, there was never any urge to move one of the other two. Carrying three goalkeepers always seemed like a luxury; especially when you consider that the starter was not costing the team any meaningful dollars, only salary cap space.

you'd have to believe Gerba is coming....
that video that was posted on TFC TV and then taken down said "Ali Gerba - Newest player acquired" not "Rights to Ali Gerba acquired" and you think they wouldn't put up reels for a player they only have the rights too. I think it was just a matter of someone hitting the "upload" button a day too early.....unless something fell through.

Not drinking the Mo Kool-Aid.

Under pressure from fielding a lousy team -- he TRADES!
This is a diversionary tactic.

No way Gerba would be as good as a DP, but he'll probably cost a lot of cap space.

Wouldn't be a first time. ;)

Don't get me wrong,I would like to see Gerba playing for TFC ASAP.
But until I see him playing my excitement is put on hold.

denime.....sorry if I am going to make you laugh again (but I probably won't since the same joke told twice isn't that funny)

The reason why Mo has called for a press conference, is that he is announcing that he is the new DP because he wants to play against Real Madrid on grass.

Today's co-ed girl (http://coedmagazine.com/category/girls/daily-snapshot-girls-2/) :) well if Garcia can play like he did a few years ago then yippie...if not then :(

Everyone's been asking for this Gerba guy, so hope he lives up to the hype. Hey we have a handful of allocation cash that we need to use, so that should help. Hey at least Mo made a change.....finally....I think this calls for some Dairy Queen

Not sure that there was much choice on the backline. Given the injury to Brennan and the absence of Wynne and the well-documented play, especially of late, of Velez and Harmse, and there are precious few options with the existing group. I think that acquiring Garcia is a positive move, but not the move that would put us over the top (I'm not sure that we can ever see the top right now). Our backline hurt without Garcia, having him can only help.

Gerba is another interesting piece. If he is better than anyone else on the roster, then he, too, is an improvement.

I don't buy into the DP thing anyway, as long as even a portion of DP money is allocated within the cap. Put it completely outside and then I think there is a point to it.

Is it just me, or does it seem that this deal must have had some of that allocation money in it...??? I know it hasn't been reported (not that I'eve seen yet), but to land an experienced defender, and the rights to a Canadian international we have a chance at signing, you'd think we'd have to give up more than a 3rd rnd draft pick...

Side note - I am now craving a Dairy Queen banna split! :yum:

I'll just say this:

We rid ourselves of a backup keeper, who despite his professionalism, did not look good this year and for stretches last year. His positioning has always worried me. He was also making decent coin.

We obtained a starting CB with MLS experience (loads), which we really need. It sounds like his strength is his football IQ and his coolness under pressure, which we also need.

We also obtained Ali Gerba's rights. While he hasn't lit up the universe at club level, I think he's a good option and will score some goals in MLS (provided we can sign him).

Does Mo get the free pass? Nope. However, he has partially addressed two of our biggest needs. I, like others, am cautiously optimistic about this trade.

Well said. I, as a supporter of this club, also see the signing/rights deals as a positive until proven otherwise. Gotta have faith in the FC, plain and simple.

Now if Mo moved on to releasing Barrett and Vitti, we'd be really on our way. Whacking Barrett and Vitti would open up two international roster spots and will be necessary if TFC is to sign Jamie Smith from Aberdeen, as I still hope will be the case.

Ya... what ever happened with the Jamie Smith "formal offer"?

I find it hard to believe that this guy showed up in Toronto and had a "4 day trial peroid" and not one journo who supposedly go to all the practices has seen him and written about him. This sounds more like MLS rumour stuff everyday. If anyone has anything to add here it would be helpful

Here is an interview with Nick Garcia from Centre Line Soccer.com

When Nick Garcia woke up Tuesday morning, he thought it would be like any other day. Yet just a few hours later, he was in the airport, waiting to head to Toronto to take up with old teammate Mo Johnston.

Seems that it has been a while since Robbo last penned a column. Checked online to see that the last one was May 28th. Looking forward to seeing what he has to say.

Have I missed them being posted here?
