Yeah Paul, keep marketing that friendly as a good thing. If it's not Barcelona, ManU or AC Milan then I'm sorry, but they probably won't be no Real Madrid. If you had two teams that were so similar then you could've just made us pay for the other one.

That would exceed my expectations - either River or Flamengo.

I assume you think it's River, which I agree with.

They need to announce that Aug 8 River-Juve game next week also (as part of the TFC-RM "details"). Could get interesting for the SSH - we may be "forced" to buy both the TFC-RM and Juve-River games. If so, I may be grumpy.

Real Madrid game is not for TFC supporters, it's a shameless attempt to see if theirs 20,000 RM fans in the GTA dumb enough to be gouged by ML$E.....

TFC are being pimped out for a Real Madrid "home game" at BMO.

There's a bigger target market than that.

- Suits who will take clients and expense the tickets
- Euro soccer fans in this town who have never been to BMO.

So it will be River.

The question then becomes...people weren't impressed with Independiente as a friendly opponent....how will River be received.

This been posted elsewhere yet? Anyway, River confirmed:

Toronto FC announced Saturday that Club Atlético River Plate of Argentina will visit BMO Field in the annual Carlsberg Cup on Wednesday, July 22 2009.

River Plate will be the team’s fifth international visitor to Toronto to play in a friendly, and the second team to battle for the Carlsberg Cup. In 2007, Toronto FC welcomed Portuguese side Benfica and English Premier League club Aston Villa, while in 2008 the club played host to Mexican side Pachuca (Carlsberg Cup winners) and Argentinean team Independiente.

“To bring a club of River Plate’s history to Toronto is very exciting for us,” said senior director of business operations Paul Beirne. “They are a team steeped in tradition and once again we are pleased to host such an opponent at BMO Field. We look forward to another exciting game with some South American flair that our fans will enjoy.”

I agree. River Plate is popular club, and has a lot of history, but its not Chelsea. Though of all the big clubs coming here, how many would command such a (relatively) low match fee? Since the majority of tickets are already included in the season ticket packs.

The people who aren't excited about River (all the crap about the friendlies aside), you need to go find some clips of games. First of all, they are perenially at the top of one of the toughest leagues in the world. Second, they have one of the greatest histories of any club in the world. Thirdly, ITS ARGENTINIAN FOOTBALL! Watch how the Argentines play! Thats why its called the beautiful game! River is to Independiant what like..... the Dodgers would be to the Tigers. Short of Boca, this is as good as it gets in that league. And if you don't believe in the quality of the domestic ball there, go check out how many club world cups teams from there win

To be fair...the FO has been having problems booking the July 22 date. They couldn't announce anything because they didn't have anything firm. You can't announce something you don't know yet.

The Real Madrid opportunity was dropped on their laps and they took it. Can't fault them for that either.

Where they screwed up was thinking fans and supporters were going to overlook the money-grabbing opportunity if nothing was going to be given back. Especially when it puts the team in a difficult position of giving up a home game during a long away stretch and moves a fixture (that's a no-no). They underestimated how upset people would be. Couple that with a couple of weeks of poor results and what you have is a powder keg waiting to go off. They should've realized that powder keg needed defusing.

You'd be right, except for the fact that it was the Globe and Mail that leaked the information about Real Madrid, much to the chagrin of FO.

So who is to blame for the leak?

The people who reported the info, or the people who created the info?

If you going to blame the Globe then you are just shooting the messenger.

If the FO doesnt let the cat out of the bag, the Globe has nothing to report.

I'm gonna be honest, I'd take River over Chelsea. I think maybe I've just had my fill of European clubs and like the change of pace teams like Independiente, River, etc. can offer.

Well, as A Chelsea supporter I wouldn't :D

But I get your point. IF TFC continues with the friendlies in the years to follow it's good to see teams from other parts of the world.

Agree with the friendlies or not, River Plate is a great club and TFC should be given credit for bringing in a team of this quality.

Even if there was no leak, the fans and media aren't stupid. The club had to move the NYRB game because time was running out. People than put 2 and 2 together.

Oh for sure, they are a good opponent for us.

The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to agree that friendlies are becoming more of a hassle than they are worth. I used to be down with the All-Star game as well, but now when you look ahead at the schedule we'll be having once Vancouver and Portland are playing in MLS, in addition to a potential 4-team NCC tourney, you can plainly see that we're going to have to drop some unnecessary matches.

An MLS season with us playing 19 teams home and away in addition to NCC matches is gonna be killer on the players when you throw in the ASG and mid-season friendlies.

I've been to very few non-TFC games in my life so I like the friendlies, but with everything else going on I agree with you, they will have to be cut. I don't think they need to scrap the ASG, but it should be moved to after the MLS CUP, hold it in Miami or Hawaii like the NFL Pro-Bowl.

I'm not blaming the Globe, but they were the one who broke the story. The leak could've come from anywhere from Real Madrid, to MLSE sources, to some executive assistant at MLSE. Leaks happen, and always will happen, and they make it impossible to control PR campaigns.

The original indictment was that the FO was stupid with the way they handled the PR for this. My point was that it was impossible to handle the PR since it leaked before they were ready to announce it.

River Plate will be the team's fifth international visitor to Toronto to play in a friendly, and the second team to battle for the Carlsberg Cup. In 2007, Toronto FC welcomed Portuguese side Benfica and English Premier League club Aston Villa, while in 2008 the club played host to Mexican side Pachuca (Carlsberg Cup winners) and Argentinean team Independiente.

Two teams in 2007, two in 2008... does this mean one more team is still to be announced, or are Real Madrid the other team?

Did you read any of the other posts on this site before posting? River and Real Madrid are the 2 friendlies.

Ya, okay. Didn't read too closely. I didn't hear that the Carslburg Cup (that oh so coveted prize!) was at stake when the Madrid game was announced. I only heard it at the announcement of Juan Pablo's former club. Hey listen buddie, some of us drink at night, to wind down from a hard day's work, and so we might miss a few pertinent details. A little forgiveness here, eh?
