All the tie-break math -- with style and colour, besides!

Very nice, we were all trying to explain this to one another yesterday. Pretty much all of us knew what it took (to a certain point) but a lot of us failed at explaining it to others, leading to further confusion.

But the best way to win this thing, is to win tonight!

Hey Ben - just one correction - Vancouver actually beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the '79 Soccer Bowl, 2-1. Although winning the semi against NY in NY was pretty darned big...

math? bah!

they just need to win, which should be the default mentality for every game anyway.

1 Correction in the article Ben, if your tie breakers are correct (and I have no reason to doubt that) then a 2-0 (or more) win by Vancouver tonight leaves us dead in the water, and Vancouver takes the trophy (even if we beat Montreal by 10). That scares me (I had hoped we could win, but not lose, the tourny tonight).

This is what I'm worried about, though I'm not sure if head-to-head goal differential counts in this case. I hate the wording on the CSA web page, which reads as follows:

Greater goal difference in matches between the teams concerned (if more than two teams finish equal on points)

I'm not sure why more than two teams need to be tied in order for head-to-head GD to take into affect. I'm inclined to believe that this clause is a typo, and a two-goal-or-greater Vancouver win will give our left-coast rivals the silverware.

well... I guess I'll worry about the finer points if it gets that far.
First we got the possibility of a TFC win... then a TFC tie... then even a TFC 1-0 loss doesn't kill us. What are the chances anything more than those possibilities will occur? someone do the statistical analysis ;)

Whoops! Yes, Vancouver DOES advance automatically if they win by two or more goals tonight. I've edited the story accordingly.

Just freaking win.

And then beat Montreal.

That would put a stamp on this competition.

If Vancouver gets a two-goal lead tonight, both teams should hire lawyers on the spot.

Haha, so true! This could be the first year we see nothing but question marks on the Voyageurs' Cup.

Everyone relax. CSA just issued a clarification:
http://www.canadasoccer.com/news/headlines.asp

This says Vancouver CANNOT win the tournament tonight. After total points in games between tied teams, the next two tiebreakers, goal difference between tied teams and total goals between tied teams, only apply if there are more than 2 tied teams. Since it's only TFC and Vancouver, they don't apply.

It's all there in the CSA release. Probably because it was impossible to understand what they said the first time!

I decided to delete my entire story. There just wasn't enough certainly left to run with.

I'll take another run at it if TFC loses tonight.
