Tournament founders deserve recognition
Winner of Voyageurs Cup determined tomorrow
Ben Rycroft (http://www.metronews.ca/edmonton/columnist/179696--just-soccer-by-ben-rycroft)
To know where you’re going, you have to know where you’ve been.
And as another widely successful Nutrilite Canadian Championship reaches its culmination tomorrow with the Vancouver Whitecaps hosting Toronto FC, it’s important to remember how the Voyageurs Cup came to be.

TFC wilts in heat
Gerry Dobson
We knew it would be hot. And we knew Houston would play well.
Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear told us before the game that in his opinion this is the toughest climate anywhere in the league.
It’s brutal, especially in the summer months.
But nobody saw this one coming.

Toronto FC concedes 'A Bad Day In The Office'
There was no hiding from the fact, and to his credit, Chris Cummins did not try.
Toronto FC had, like the top two buttons of his collared shirt, come undone, and the interim head coach conceded it had been "a bad day in the office."
His team conceded three goals in five minutes of play in the first half against the Houston Dynamo, digging a hole from which it could not climb. Toronto lost, 3-0, stumbling into another busy week with two losses in its last three games.

is dobson right about the mathematics of Tuesday's game? I mean, yes, if TFC wins the game, they win the cup. But he says a tie also wins TFC the cup... but a tie would stand TFC and Van on even terms (7 points) with the same goal differential. if TFC then lost to the Limp Act in the 4th game, Van would get in, right?

The only consolation from the beating we took this weekend is that every other team that matters to us either lost or drew. And how about FC Dallas spanking the Fire 3-0? Go Kenny!

I'm pumped for tomorrow -- we win and we're international, baby!!

Dobber only makes sense if there's some different tiebreaker I don't know about like head to head play?????

cuz if the first tiebreaker is head to head play, then yes, a tie is all TFC needs. But the Wikipedia entry says otherwise.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Canadian_Championship

I wish we could get this cleared up.

Rocker, your math seems right to me, that 2-nil win over the Limpact makes all the difference, TFC need 2 pts to clinch, its almost impossible for Toronto to win the Tourney with 1pt out of 2 games, as they will need a Goal Difference of 0.

rocker

wait, this article:

http://www.montrealgazette.com/story_print.html?id=1613972&sponsor=

says:

If two or all three sides are tied with the same number of points, the tiebreaker will be the greater number of goals scored in games among the teams.

Is this what Dobson is getting at?
That if TFC ties Vancouver, TFC has the greater number of goals in the 2 games with Vancouver, cuz we already have a 1-0 win.

...or the Lamepact. But yes, that was my math as well: though TFC and Vancouver are tied in points and goal difference, Vancouver is currently ahead on goals scored (3 to 2). The next tiebreaker after that is away goals which Vancouver also leads (1 to 0) but that's just because TFC hasn'T played away yet.

The confusion seems to come from the tiebreakers: we need to find the official rules of the competitions, perhaps at an official site. Where might that be?

At this link, they place TFC first in the standings and say so in the text: http://www.canadasoccer.com/tourney/FIFA_Clubs/national.asp

Here, they say TFC needs a win or a draw to eliminate Vancouver: http://www.canadasoccer.com/news/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3656

But I still can't find any rules as to the tiebreakers.

CONCACAF also has TFC first, perhaps applying the head to head rule?

HAZAA!

http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3107

Apparently, whoever wrote the Wikipedia page took his tiebreaking information from here, when they first announced the tournament last year. So either:

1. The official site is just wrong and a draw will not eliminate Vancouver.
2. The tiebreakers have changed from last year and a draw will eliminate Vancouver.

Perhaps, but this looks like it was taken right from the official site because the formatting is exactly the same.

This whole situation is quite confusing based on the fact head to head has never been in the equation...

maybe even the media just knows if we draw the whitecaps that we will kill l'impact in Montreal...

it's lame that this isn't posted anywhere officially. it's such a short tourney that being tied in points is very possible.

The Whitecaps win sets up what could be a title match next Tuesday 2 June at Swangard Stadium in Vancouver. Toronto FC needs a win or a draw to eliminate the Whitecaps and clinch the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship; Vancouver needs a win over Toronto FC as well as help from the Impact on 18 June.

Yeah, and the lack of an official posting just serves to confuse fans and members of the media. Imagine if there's a draw tomorrow. The fact that we don't know if that would be enough to clinch the title just sucks the buzz out of this whole match.

Rycroft's article really hits home considering Toronto is now posed to win the tournament. I agree completely with him in that we should be simply calling it the Voyageur's Cup out of respect for the supporters who got the ball rolling for this competition.

Agree in the extreme, Cash. To call it whatever sponsor has their name on it this year (for we all know it's bound to change eventually) is forgetting who has come before.

I'll let the broadcasters worry about calling it something they're paid to call it.

Forever Voyageurs

It's the Vcup.

So am i understanding this correctly, Goal Difference does not count in determining the standings for the NL Tourney?

^ I was always under the impression that the winner is decided first by total points; then if two clubs are tied, by total points scored between the two tied teams face-to-face.
