View Full Version : What should the Derby be called?

SweetOwnGoal

Don't think I can add a poll here, so I'll simply open it up for discussion...

The TFC - Montreal game needs a name. All great derby games have one.

My comments are here (http://www.24thminute.com/2009/05/whats-in-name.html)
What do you think?
Some suggestions:
The Canadian Derby
The Dominion Derby
The 401 Derby
The St. Lawrence Derby

take derby out of the title altogether, it seems like a dumb word for two teams with the space of a couple small european countries between them.

I like the 401 connection, we do have that in common.

With all due respect to our U-Sector brethren, I can't stand that name.

Is this game a classic? Not yet

The "Superclasico" in LA is a farce! It's a joke. The Superclasico is River Plate vs. Argentina which has been going on for over a hundred years. I hate the fact that they call LA Galaxy vs. Chivas USA "Superclasico". There's nothing super or classic about it. It's a marketing farce. Fuck this marketing bullshit.

If this gets called the SuperClassique Canadien (and why the hell are we putting the name in French, the language of the province where MONTREAL comes from?) then we're a joke.

Bah...I need some coffee.

^^ completely agree Jack..this game is neither super nor classic. It's such an arbitrary thing to try to name this. Like Kingpin showed earlier, 95% or Derby's arent' named as much as they are described, through their region or city. The only one's with names are monsters, like the old firm, or a real Superclassico. Why on earth are we trying to follow in the LA Galaxy's footstep here.

My superior use of the internet - or his extreme wrongness? :)

And to keep on topic, I have no issue with naming the game if that's what fans want - that's what fans are for. It's better than having TFC shove the Trillium Cup bile at it's fans - That's worse that 'SuperClassico'... So my feeling would be to beat TFC to it before we end up with something really impotent.

It may be marketing bull****, but it works. I've seen the Trillium Cup mentioned here with importance. Anyway... Oh, and yes - it should be in English...

So true - that's why I think it's better if the fans beat them to the punch. I know it's not the best solution - but it's better than the alternative. I would just want to ensure that it is original, unlike your aforementioned reference to LA.

Guys...it's just for fun. It's probably the writer in me that desires to see a name evolve and having a "debate" over what that name should be is just a way to pass the time until we head down to BMO tonight.

A 14-year-old kid was killed up off St. Clair yesterday. That's serious stuff. This is just football.

And I don't care what anyone says. This is a derby. No, it's not a local derby like you see in other parts of the world -- you may have noticed that's not possible here. But, when you put it into a Canadian context, it is.

Doesn't need a name yet. What happens if Ottawa is awarded a franchise? Then the Derby becomes Ottawa and Montreal and we're on the outside looking in at whatever cute name we prematurely ejaculated to. This rests on the expansion Ottawa's shoulders.
Ottawa in MLS? I think it's safe to say that won't happen.

I think we should just call it the Voyageur's Derby, seeing as that is the cup Toronto and Montreal and Vancouver are battling over. Or get a suitable corporate sponsor and name it that - like the Molson Canadian Derby. :canada:

The Claque Derby
"a group of admirers; in old French, the claque was a group of people paid to applaud or disturb a piece at the theater; in modern French, it means "a slap"; "clique" is used in this sense (but in a pejorative way). "

i like it, the claque is the supporters groups, our theater is the pitch, the slap is those french pussy puffs!!!
i just thought about this name now, i think we should come up with name and descriptions and have a real vote!!!

The Cunningham Cup

(why? - well there's complicated reasoning here...suffice it to say if we need a name that will conjure up some sensitivities and history, 2 things important to derby games, well this could be it..)

The Upper/Lower Derby?

The East Dominion Derby?

^^methinks flush is on to something with this one

... that being said, i kinda agree with jack, in that it's too early really and we don't want to force a label on this (cough*trilliumcup*cough), toronto v. montreal is fine for now and some name will just kinda naturally come along

Didn't read the whole thread so forgive me if it's been mentioned previously but: FWIW, MLSR seems to favour the St. Lawrence Derby. Not that I'm trying to imply they're the authority on this, just as an FYI.

'the dominion derby' is great hence the dominion of canada
or the 'confederate derby' (sounds Yankee but... confederation july 1st 1867 qc and on the two original provinces)
worst case scenario: the fur trade derby
