Mornin'

Defining draw
Gerry Dobson
There are defining moments in a season, and Saturday’s 3-3 draw with D.C. United might turn out to be one for Toronto FC.
D.C. is a place that had never been kind to the Reds. Even though this result in the end felt somehow like a loss, to gain a point in a stadium which had historically been a disaster for Toronto, is like a win.

Seems as if this "second team in the GTA" babblefest has struck Gareth Wheeler.

Second MLS team in GTA would be a welcome move

Been saying it for a while: there is NO reason that Woodbridge AC, or Mississauga City wouldn't bring an AWESOME, awesome, presence to the league. Imagine that derby!

Looking like he's willing to let bygones be bygones, Garber speaks nicely about Montreal:

Expansion continues to be of interest to most readers and there were many posts regarding the status of Montreal as a potential MLS market. We continue to be impressed by the Saputo family's commitment to the sport in Montreal. The Impact is a very popular team (they attracted 55,000 fans to their Champions League match vs. Santos) and play in a soccer-specific stadium in downtown Montreal.

Joey Saputo is working with a variety of local government entities on a plan to expand the capacity of Stade Saputo. I believe Montreal is a very viable MLS market and I plan to keep in regular contact with the Saputos as we continue to develop our future expansion plans.

It would be great if we played MTL 4x /year, twice for the V-Cup, and twice in league play.

Not really news - but I will put it hear, Denime. You can start a new thread, if you wish.

DeRo's Blast a Goal of the Week favorite

Good morning folks. As we get ready to kick off the new week with a fresh assortment of posts, I wanted to get the day started with the best goal of the weekend. It came courtesy of Toronto FC's Dwayne DeRosario, who looked to have a game-winner before a late penalty helped D.C. salvage a tie.
I'm sure Mike Magee's late equalizer will get its share of votes for Goal of the Week, but DeRosario's run and blast is, for my money, the best effort of Week 8.

That SSG has a super-hot girl-next-door look about her... very nice!

As for a second MLS team in GTA... I certainly wouldn't object... it would be fun to have a local rival.
I would even be happy to see a Toronto USL club arrive.
That would still give the Canadian Championship some added punch!

And yes... Toronto needs more depth on the roster.
But I am holding out hope that someone will arrive when other leagues conclude their business.
I would rather be patient and get the right person.
At least by waiting this long, TFC gets a good look at the current lineup and is able to assess where help is needed most.
Make it happen guys!

^ yeah... I'm not too certain... surely there are a lot of footie fans in the GTA still who are not into TFC yet.

But I think if you brought a team in (whether it be MLS or USL), and gave them a classy looking stadium, with a roof and intimate atmosphere, then people would find the experience attractive enough to get into. I bet there are some folks on the TFC STH waiting list who don't follow the team closely yet want to get tickets. People like that might jump at the chance to get season tickets to another team.

Sounds ludicrous now, but I could definitely see this happening one day... and why not?

IMO, places like 'sauga, Vaughn, Hamilton and even Oakville have a much larger more 'soccer loving' base than say Columbus or KC.

And while yes, the majority of people on the SS waiting list are "TFC" fans, I'm sure a good number of them would pounce on the opportunity to get season tickets for another GTA team.

No way missauga would work, this is not Everton Liverpool.

Alot of fans of TFC come from Mississauga.
The defining factor would be to find out were all the fans are located.

Best bet would be to put a new team in Durham:D.....

Last Week: Tied D.C. United, 3-3, on Saturday.
This Week: vs. Chicago Fire on Saturday (4pm, Direct Kick)
Outlook: Playing on the road and without Carl Robinson, TFC overcame a sluggish start to tie D.C. in a match it could have easily won. If there's a negative it's that Toronto goes yet another game without a goal from a forward.

^^ those are interesting attendance stats!

I'm sure MLS is paying close attention to numbers like that, and is making sure that any new cities will drum up the same support as Toronto and Seattle.
I think Philly will have a good turnout.
Same with Vancouver and Portland.
And if Montreal get in, I think the same could be said there too.
I think as these new teams come into the league, you will see overall attendance rise.
*fingers crossed!*

very sad....very very sad....

You could also see it as hopeful. Seattle and Toronto are accounting for 30% of MLS attendance but if the trend continues, Philly will add to that and I think the article is wrong about Red Bulls not improving their attendance in their new stadium.

To the 2nd team in the GTA argument: A lot of people are naturally contrary. They see how we support TFC, and given the option, would actively cheer against us. Its the way things work. I can think of 2 or 3 of my friends who currently support AC Milan and Chelsea, who deem us unworthy of attention, who I'm SURE would jump all over another team. Just as a natural reaction to us. Remember: Every action has an equal and an opposite. I was thinking about Durham as a region, but to be honest, I dunno if theres enough Durham pride for that. I'm not convinced Hamilton could really support a club. Maybe the Niagara region, but its too small. Scarborough is still too Toronto. Maybe Vaughan is the way to go....

Roogsy
05-12-2009, 12:44 AM
There is no other region outside of Toronto. Put a team in the east, nobody in the west would want to go. Put a team in the west and you cut out the east.

Right now TFC is the perfect storm and it cant be replicated. Anyone who thinks it can, is deluding themselves.

Sorry - Are you saying that Toronto is the reason for future MLS expansion or responsible for a teams success in the West Coast?

I think he means that without what happened in Toronto, Seattle may not have developed into the popular club that it has. I believe the Sounders brass (amongst other candidate ownership groups) met with TFC management prior to their franchise bid to pick their brains over Toronto's success. Can you imagine what would happen if they went to KC or perhaps Columbus? Paul might be able to confirm all that.

Oh, and unless we see MLS divided into 2 seperate conference like MLB or the NFL, we're never going to see a second club in Toronto or the GTA. I suppose another USL club could be a possibility, but I don't see it getting the sort of support that TFC enjoys.
