Early goal from Hamse stands up as the winner as TFC opens tourney with solid victory
Daniel Girard

Coming into last night's game against the Vancouver Whitecaps there were questions whether Toronto FC would rest some of its starters for a busy stretch of league play.

Whitecaps a damp squib this time
Eric Koreen

With clear skies on an idyllic Canada Day last year, the Vancouver Whitecaps scored a major upset at BMO Field.
With the early May weather offering something different last night, so did the Whitecaps' fortunes.

TFC downs Whitecaps
PAUL ATTFIELD

Toronto — Turns out they were serious. Toronto FC spent the days building up to the kick off of last night's Nutrilite Canadian Championship telling anyone who would listen that they were not taking it lightly this year after 2008's second-place finish.

TFC finally solve Whitecaps
THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO -- Toronto got the win but squandered more than a few chances Wednesday night, needing a great late save by Stefan Frei to preserve a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the opening game of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship.
The game should not have been that close. Toronto outshot Vancouver 12-2 (9-2 in shots on target).

Reds get revenge on Whitecaps
Harmse strikes early to give TFC Nutrilite win
By STEVE BUFFERY (steve.buffery@sunmedia.ca),

The Vancouver Whitecaps couldn't keep out of Kevin Harmse's way last night.
Appropriately enough, it was a Canadian, Vancouver native Harmse, who provided the goal for Toronto FC as the MLS representatives downed the Whitecaps, 1-0, in the first game of the Nutrilite Canadian championship, played in front of 19,811 at a cool and wet BMO Field.

Ya Paul menitoned that last night. 16000 was a mistake. At the game, theres no way there was less than 17 or 18000 people actually IN the stadium, forget tickets sold

^ hmm. looked closer to 16,000 than 18,000 from where i stood.
(and i mean before the rain which sent a lot for cover.)

Great news today. Here's one more which discusses a bit why Cronin wasn't in the line-up: he had a bit of a knock and felt stiff but there's no reason he shouldn't be fit for DC.

Whitecaps loss has a silver lining

The mood in the Vancouver Whitecaps dressing room moments after Wednesday's 1-0 loss to Toronto FC was disappointment. It could have been one of relief .
Players could have been thankful Toronto didn't win the opening match of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship by a wider margin. That's because goal differential could play a vital role in the final outcome of the three-team tournament between the Whitecaps, TFC and Montreal Impact.

Good to see Nana and Ibbe out there last night. I'd like to see them start against Montreal. It's a good opportunity for them to play in an important game.

We should've buried so many...

It's still the biggest problem with this team.

Someday they'll just have to open the bank and get a DP.

Someone who can finish MOST of his chances is the only reason we are not in command in the east.

This team has never had a finisher.

after a good match last night...which we need to address that damn finishing..argh...here is a yummy coed girl (http://coedmagazine.com/category/girls/daily-snapshot-girls-2/)that i'm sure none of our players could score with either hehe.

That's the smallest crowd I've seen at a TFC game…I doubt there was even 16k.

There were tons of empty seats in my section as was the case in the West Stand.

The four seats in the row in front of ours were empty…and the row in front of that and the next!

and a bonus, girls of coed magazine May Showdown (http://coedmagazine.com/2009/05/06/miss-coed-may-2009-showdown-vote-now/#more-74132)...just because I was so happy leaving the game last night :)

We will face a stiff challenge in DC, so hopefully the lads will be up to the task. TFC doesn't do well against possession-oriented teams like DCU.

hope DeRo will be okay, he kinda pulled up a little bit in the last few minutes last night. Don't know if anyone else noticed. He did a fantastic job last night, you could definitely see a glaring difference between the levels. As much as USL pundits like to say their league is superior in all aspects (I want to laugh all the time), but level of play is different. Vancouver is one of the top teams in USL1 this year already through the first 5 matches and won it last year. They were easily dispatched last evening (well should have if we could finish).

We were lucky to get away with the win.
I am over the moon at the points, as this tournament is what I really care about . . but.

It was not a good performance (again) we can be SO much more.
When will we see a muliy TFC Goal game at BMO?. . . . still waiting.

Last night was a GREAT chance to stomp on the necks of Vancouver.
and send a message to those Impact Charlie Uniform November Tangos.

This better not come back and bite us on the ass.

DC Looked good in that Draw with KC.
Moreno is a beast.
Serioux, Atta, Velez, and Jimmy are going to have to REALLY watch it.

:drum: TORONTO FC - FTW !!! :drum:

I came across this article ahead of the Glasgow Old Firm match this weekend.

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/display.var.2506697.0.rangers_midfielder_mo_edus_g oing_to_be_up_and_running_thanks_to_strike_legend_ mo_johnston.php

MO EDU reckons he can make a major impact for Rangers on his Old Firm debut - after getting a unique insight on what to expect in the world-famous fixture from Mo Johnston.
Edu is almost certain to get the nod to play at Ibrox on Saturday from Gers boss Walter Smith after a series of highly- impressive displays in central midfield in the last month.

I was not impressed with the match either, techno. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. If not for Frei, they would have tied it at the end. We have played much better; perhaps the elements had something to do with that.

This is actually the reason we don't play in a better league.

This is actually the reason we don't play in a better league.

Well no, that's actually because there is no other league close by that will take us.

But I think I know what you meant :)
