GolTV And Premier League: Gol TV Declares Interest In US TV Rights

After announcing that GolTV has renewed its TV rights to the Bundesliga for the next three seasons (http://www.bundesligatalk.com/goltv-renews-bundesliga-tv-rights-for-next-3-seasons/499), a GolTV executive has revealed that the US TV broadcaster is also interested in the TV and/or Internet rights to the Premier League which are up for renewal in the next 30 days for the 2010-2013 seasons.

In an article in MultiChannel News (http://www.multichannel.com/article/231365-Gol_TV_Nets_Bundesliga_Renewal.php), GolTV COO Rodrigo Lomberto stated “We’re evaluating the situation to see if there is a way we can participate,” he said, adding that “we have the funds” to be in that game.
GolTV’s interest in the Premier League TV rights is quite surprising. In the past, the network has shown Liverpool TV and Arsenal TV (http://www.epltalk.com/goltv-pass-on-arsenal-tv-and-liverpool-tv/978), but the last Premier League TV rights deal cost $59 million in the United States (http://www.epltalk.com/espns-premier-league-dilemma/5481). The price tag may be out of their reach, but it’s possible that they could share part of the rights deal alongside one or more of the other bidders: Fox Soccer Channel, Setanta Sports and ESPN.

In other GolTV news, the network is planning on having HD broadcasts available as early as next year. “We’re having discussions with our distributors. A lot of the matches from Europe are now being shot in HD. I think you’ll see some of our programming in HD during the second or third quarter of 2010.”

That's GolTV USA, not GolTV Canada :)

It may not apply to us in Canada.

Getting the EPL on Gol would be great....but still setanta canada still has those rights, and cant see them giving it up dispite the problems of setanta uk

I know, but those changes may not apply to us until they apply to CRTC.

Just saying.

I wouldnt say 90%, maybe 75% but yes the majority is the same. I work where the actual canadian master control is so as soon as i hear anything about us getting ready to build the HD aspects of this I will let people know too

HD MLS is great.

You can really see the empty seats.

And Seattle have really nice seats... especially considering they are an expansion franchise. Much nicer seats than ours...

EPL rights are sold separately for Canada and the US. I doubt if GolTV US pulled this coup off it would affect us, however if Setanta goes tits up in June all bets are off.. Games could end up spread accross FSW, Gol, RSN and The Score.

Time will tell, but all I care about is access to the games.

Only people who haven't watched sports in HD would say that (or those with small tvs...)

This won't apply to our GolTV. Not yet, anyway.

Once you go HD...you never go back. It's like watching a movie in black and white when you don't have to.

not sure why, but whatever I watch from europe, soccer, motorcycle racing or F1 always seems to be in SD. I know they have HD camera's there cause I watch MotoGP via their onlien feed sometimes and its clear as day. its annoying as fuck
