PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 30, 2009) – Major League Soccer (MLS) Philadelphia 2010 today revealed the date for an announcement ceremony to unveil the club’s name, colors, logo, and ticket pricing. The celebration will be hosted at City Hall by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter on Monday, May 11 at 11:30am.

The Mayor will be joined by team, local and state officials when MLS Philadelphia reveals its long-awaited identity with just over 10 months remaining before First Kick. Club supporters and soccer enthusiasts are encouraged to join the historic festivities in Dilworth Plaza on the west side of City Hall at the intersection of 15th and Market Streets.

“This is truly a defining moment for our franchise, and we couldn’t be more excited to proclaim our identity to the soccer world and our loyal fans,” said MLS Philadelphia CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz. “We’ve created an authentic brand that reflects Philadelphia’s deep-rooted history and the wealth of feedback gathered from our supporters. The arrival of top-flight soccer in Philadelphia is about to feel decidedly more tangible.”
The club recently held a “Fan Vote” campaign enabling supporters to choose among four proposed team names or submit a write-in vote.

“Our team name, logo and colors will shape the foundation of our identity,” added MLS Philadelphia President Tom Veit. “The process of developing our character will continue when we hire a coaching staff, sign players and expand our front office. We’re dedicated to doing things the right way and building an organization that represents the hard work and passion of Philadelphians throughout the Delaware Valley.”

With well over 6,000 season ticket deposits collected to date, the team will also announce ticket pricing for the under-construction 18,500 seat stadium along the Delaware River waterfront in Chester, Pa. Current season ticket depositors will then have 30 days to add seats to their accounts using their existing priority number. For more information on becoming a season ticket holder, please visit www.mlsphilly2010.com (http://www.mlsphilly2010.com/).

Philadelphia Union has won according to MLSR... but we all know how reliable MLSR is!

drewski
05-05-2009, 07:26 AM
AC Philly was another one I heard was in the running

EDIT:

actually it was MLSR that reported it was the likely winner, and would be announced back in March

http://www.mls-rumors.net/2009/03/expansion-welcome-ac-philadelphia-most.html

Philadelphia City and Philadelphia SC were also in the running according to them.

Philly Union is the best out of them IMO. Its not a euro knockoff and it has meaning to the history of the city.

The 4 choices were:
SC
AC
City
Union

Ives did an informal vote on his site ... More than 3,600 votes were cast in SBI's informal poll on naming the Philly team (http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2009/01/philadelphia-settles-on-finalists-for-team-name.html), and it was a very close race. Philadelphia City won the SBI voting with 30 percent of the voting while AC Philadelphia (27 percent) and Philadelphia Union (26 percent) followed closely behind. Philadelphia SC drew the least support among SBI readers with just 14 percent of the vote.

Kinda hard to call them Philadelphia City when they are located outside of the city in Chester.

As for the colours, would it be blue and gold like the flag?

In my opinion, the greatest tragedy would be for a city as politically and culturally historic as Philadelphia to simply rip-off the name of a high-profile existing European club (AC Milan) or create a newer stylish identity with no regard to civic heritage.

Philadelphia Union or Philadelphia City would both be cool, but I would rather see something more imaginative. I still stand by Independence FC.

In a perfect world, the team would call itself Philadelphia Athletic. But since MLB would sic their vulture lawyers on them if they did, I'd go with Philadelphia Union. It has a nice Euroy feel to it and it would be an original name for an American soccer side.

Going with AC or As would just make the newest MLS team look like a sad imposter. My mates in England laugh so hard at some of the stupid fucking names in MLS. REAL Salt lake? I mean come on, seriously? Some of the franchise names which are typically American are also pretty stupid in my book (that goes for all sports not just MLS though, eg the Mighty Ducks, etc), but I still think MLS teams should be building their opwn identity, whatever that is, rather than ripping off something utterly meaningless like Real this or AC that. Generic terms like FC, City etc you can understand, but I would love to see Philly go with Union, Independence or something similar over a hopelessly sycophantic and loving glance at an Italian or Spanish side.

Using "Real" does seem a bit manufactured for Salt Lake but I have no big problem with it, it's better than a typical NA name for a football team. Which by the way, Mighty Ducks is pretty lame, but I would add this team to contend for the title of stupidest team nickname: the Miami Heat. I mean, what the hell? It's not tangible, and just refers to a temperature which is basically the speed at which atoms move. Just awful.

But getting back on point, Union would be my favourite were I voting.

Adidas were very, very smart to get the central MLS contract for all the franchises. This is the fastest growing sport in North America. They are getting massive exposure with each new franchise that opens up in MLS and soon there will be kids wearing adidas MLS gear coast to coast in both the US and Canada.

It wouldn't have been asking too much for Philadelphia Union to put a F.C. or S.C. at the end of its name to identify what it is. Philadelphia Union left alone without the identification of a "football club" sounds like a WNBA team.

As a descendant of Loyalists, I am offended by their name. Stupid American Revolution.

Personally, I think these historical images and phrases are perfect for a club like Philadelphia. It would be great if other clubs got on board and started recognizing their heritage as well.

No, they won because the damn French ran a naval blockade keeping the Brits and Loyalists from their supplies and reinforcements. Wars aren't won by "they wanted it more" that's just what Hollywood movies tell you.

Fine, they want to celebrate their heritage, that's cool. But, why not put FC after Union so another club in this league becomes universally recognizable? Someone in Southeast Asia may not follow MLS but if they hear Toronto FC, they instinctively recognize what that might be. If they hear Kansas City Wizards, Philadelphia Union, San Jose Earthquakes, an unknown would think these are teams from some other stupid American sports league that US sports marketers try to shove down the throats of the world unsuccessfully every day. The league has to operate by global means. That means recognizable names without marketing gimmicks, paying attention to FIFA international dates, embracing free market player transfers and none of this communist "draft pick" "trading" "salary cap" and "allocation" bullshit. All of that stuff is holding Toronto FC and the quality of the league back.

communist? if MLS was a free market it'd be dead.
And we'd get outspent by the fucking LA Galaxy, while a third of the teams would go bankrupt. then we'd have TFC fans complaining, "how come MLSE doesn't spend as much as the Galaxy.. ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!1"

salary caps are awesome. they give us a chance. the best way to increase quality is simply to raise the cap amount. voila.

and that handy dandy draft got us Stefan Frei and Sam Cronin without having to get in a bidding war with the LA Galaxy or Seattle Sounders. we should be thankful.

Nice! I was never really a big fan of his, but I gained a ton of respect for him after reading a biography on Phil Lynott (called "The Rocker"). After Phil died, most of his rock'n'roll friends moved on with their lives as if nothing happend (probably in denial of their own problems) but Midge made sure that Phil's mother and daughter were taken care of. He set his mother up with trust worthy business managers and started a trust/college fund for his daughter. Years after Phil's death, Midge kept in touch with his family to make sure that they doing Ok.

Seeing as they are within the circular part of the crest and not inside with the shield or above the crest itself I don't think it's reaching. Although looking at it again, I would have put the word Union in place of the stars and had the stars surround the crest.
I think the only people whose opinion really matters are the Union supporters. We can critic it and make observations but we aren't the ones who have to live with it and Union supporters like it so that's what truely matters.
