I think part of the problem may be that teams from Europe want to come, or are coming, in the last half of July, or early August, but the hole in the TFC calendar is between June 27 and July 11, where they have two weeks off (during the Gold Cup)

So my money's on a team from the Americas.

Boca or River would be fabulous, but others could be great also.

How bout some competition from the FIFA Club World Cup? I figure we should take an early look at who we'll be facing once we get there :)

Gamba Osaka from Japan?

Adelaide United?

Would be great to see some teams from places other than South America/Europe.

I read on Voyageurs that, briefly, there were tickets on sale for a Whitecaps v Everton match but that listing was quickly pulled from Ticketmaster. The date was listed at the 28th which made no sense in light of the all-star game on the 29th.

I think most people go to see TFC, not the visiting team - although a top-end visiting team would definitely create more excitment and draw more attention to the game. Having said that, there are lots of teams in England's the lower divisions that have bigger followings than many 1st division teams in other countries.

Ok so european team and they probably but not definitely never played a home game in the snow.

Eliminates Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey.. all of the north European teams...

Tough one.. Partizan, Dynamo Zagreb? Random French team? but most would be definite no for snow game. Can be one of the Ukrainian teams from the south of the country. Chernomoretz Odessa? (previous Vitti loan team).

I would love to see one of the top East european teams play here. Something different, would make for a fun game I think. As long as we take this game just for entertainment and field mostly subs

Maybe one more hint? Have they ever won any european competition? Nationality of the coach maybe?

If Leeds United were to come over, whether they remain in League One or win promotion, the ground would be filled. Same goes for Newcastle United if they go down. I reckon Nottingham Forest would draw more than a handful as well.

... because we all know that these countries get lots of snow ? I was more thinking that the team must come from one of these countries (add southern France) - probably one of the World Football Challenge participants - Milan or Inter - this would support the announcement (or is it still a rumour ?) that BMO is hauling in grass specifically for this event.

I would love to see Newcastle, I seriously think we have a chance of beating them. When we lost to Villa, it was only because we had Monsalves in net. No disrespect to the kid, but he is too young to handle that kind of a game and if we had Sutton or Frei in net the score could easily have been 2-2 or even 2-1 to us.

I like the idea of playing mid-bottom EPL teams - they are well known and I feel that TFC on a good day can compete with these guys.

...but it's a friendly. There's no way in hell the opposing team (or even TFC) will risk injuries, and wont be playing flat out. Yeah, TFC may care, but i can assure you the game would mean nothing more than a training exercise to the opposition.

That fact that Paul is teasing us makes me think it's going to be a very good team.

Could it possibly be a big team on grass? Maybe at Skydome? There are no Jays or Argo games there July 2-11, which just happens to coincide with the two week hole in our schedule.

Pfft, it will be a team that some people here will be really exited about ("omg, I've followed them since I was a kid!"), some people will be really pissed off at ("who the hell wants to see another english team/a team that didn't make champions league/a team that did I haven't heard of from a country that doesn't speak english"), and some people will be ambivalent about ("well, I guess it would be interesting to see them, they have a few players I know").

Essentially, the outcome on these boards is already decided. In fact, we should start a thread now that says "The friendly is going to be _______" then everyone can throw in their reactions ahead of time.

Bets: Giambic will hate them because Mo did something wrong, and Tim90 will ask for free stuff.

Bets: Giambic will hate them because Mo did something wrong, and Tim90 will ask for free stuff.

lol - Just need to add the 'I don't go to friendlies we should not play these meaningless games in mid season' crowd. ie: where I fit in :)

That fact that Paul is teasing us makes me think it's going to be a very good team.

Could it possibly be a big team on grass? Maybe at Skydome? There are no Jays or Argo games there July 2-11, which just happens to coincide with the two week hole in our schedule.

lets keep the match at BMO...the skydome is NOT our home...If our opponents are Barcelona, Real Madrid, to Watford or Sunderland, lets keep the game in our home park

LA and Barcelona will be playing at the Rose Bowl.

Not that 'facts' or 'prcendents' are something you are liable to consider.

The Sounders are playing CHELSEA and BARCELONA.

In one season, they are playing two teams who are better than anybody who has ever stepped on the pitch at BMO Field.

F BMO field, i wanna see what we look like in a facility the size of the sky dome.

The equation is thus-

Seattle plays at Quest Field, a football stadium of 60 000 or whatever. That capacity is a huge incentive for those big teams in terms of $.

TFC won't play its friendly at the Dome- its part of the season ticket package at BMO. End of.

I am pretty sure the $ of an agreement with another ownership group to use the Dome isn't as lucrative as playing at BMO. The only way we will ever rock the Dome is when there is absolutely no choice but to play there when we are in the winter knockout rounds of the CCL. They'll have to make it happen then.

I'd be interested to know what kind of money Seattle is dishing out to play both teams. They have to be going in to the red to do this wouldn't they??

I am quite happy sitting in my seats in section 110.

Not necessarily. See, with TFC, our success in season's ticket sales kind of ensure we won't get a great (expensive) friendly. With 16,000 odd season's tickets sold, plus half season's (some have friendly right?) and giveaways, you're probably looking at about 3000 tickets for sale where the team playing matters (they will or won't buy based on that team). Do you know the kinds of prices they would have to put on those 3000 tickets to justify bringing Man United here?

Seattle isn't quite the same. They have what, 40,000 seats that aren't held by season seat holders? Charge a crazy amount for each of those, and you can bring in a great team and still make money.

Lay odds it will be at Rogers Centre and it will be vs one of the three Italian teams on their North American tour. All they have to do is relocate all season ticket holders to a spot similar to the ones they have a BMO to make this happen. I personally would love to see this friendly at BMO but for it to work has to be done at Rogers Centre.

I can't imagine it'd be at the dome. It just means scalpers will JACK ticket prices.

Also: Never seen this mentioned before, but is it possible to add temporary seating at BMO? I know its possible in some stadiums, but I don't know where they could really do it at bmo. Still, if possible that'd have to be done right?

Scalpers are jacking prices no matter where the game is.
Can't live in fear of them.
Their would be tone a of tickets picked up by casual fans.

You could add seats in the beer garden.

Trouble is you can't add many .. tops 1,500 I would guess.

From what I have heard from the inside, they are trying to get a big European club...I also have heard there are plans for up to 3 international friendlies in the mix as well

I read an article the other day that suggested it was Real Madrid, but when I forwarded this to someone, and apparenlty TFC have tried to get the statement retracted.

How would scalpers JACK ticket prices?!? There would be an additional 35 000 tickets that would go on sale to the general public. The scalpers would have to purchase most of them before they could raise the prices.

Remember, Celtic played Roma at the Dome a few years back. The Dome was nearly full, but not sold out. Also, Liverpool played Porto and there were even less people there for that game.

The Dome is the only way to go if we want to play against one of the top teams in the world. You need to lay grass, and you need the additional ticket sales to make laying grass a possiblity.

Personally though, I think mid-season friendlies are ridiculous.

Naw. I no big friend of the corporate ownership, but even I know they wouldn't do that.

Now could they talk smack about looking at grass for BMO for the next 20 years, and never do it? That they could do.
