I was just watching the Crew feed of Saturdays game on MLS Matchcenter and at the 3:45 minute mark of the game he said the seats were empty because people have taken cover from the rain... except for the nutjobs behind the net, they love to sing and throw their stuff on the field. :hump:

Well to be honest, what else are they supposed to think?

I get excited at the prospect of the weather being terrible because it won't bother me. Just another thing to shrug off.

First of all anyone affiliated with Columbus shouldn't talk about how many people we have in seats.

Second of all, that's plain rude from the commentators. Every teams commentators are slightly biased but this is rude.

Very unprofessional.

If you've ever been to Columbus, you won't be surprised to learn that it's a term of endearment down there.:D

I thought it was kinda unprofesional when I heard it, he tried to cover his tracks by saying "its a great atmosphere" a few seconds later

I don't think it was meant to be insulting - probably just calling them "nutjobs" because they are hanging out and singing in the pouring rain, instead of running for cover like non-"nutjobs". :D

Of course, that's still ridiculous, because you're one hell of a bullshit "fan", if you can't endure a bit of fucking rain to cheer on your team.

Don't take it so personally, think of it as term of endearment. To be fair, it was pissing down rain. Staying to watch a sporting event isn't the norm.

To be honest, I got sick of the people around me going on and on about the fucking weather. At one point I said, "Hey, you know what's a distraction from the rain? THE GAME."

Ya it's no big deal. Kind of funny really ..... and c'mon, let's be honest. We all know a few "nutjobs" in the south end.

happy to be a nutjob singing my heart out for the lads in the piss rain. Best atmosphere at BMO is when all the ebay fans take cover from the rain and leave it all to the hardcore.

I'm not sure why this is even an issue.
Most of the time, when someone calls a person a "nutjob", it's usually an affectionate name for being boisterous or outrageous, in a fun way.

Most of the people I know in the RPB are in fact "nutjobs"

And that's a good thing.

if he had said retarded dumbasses, ok, then I'd be pissed. But not about this.

Hell, if I'd been out with the "nutjobs", I'd be quite proud really

I have to say the South End looked awesome when it rained. For whatever reason, it really turned up the intensity and volume of the chanting. NEE did a good job at the game too.

Exactly! It was a rain, big deal. Now if it were raining fire I would have at least have had to consider putting my hood up.

It's because they don't get it.
There's no jumbotron telling people when to make noise. There are no cheerleaders or people running around trying to drum up support during commercial breaks. Things like that...they don't get it.
It's not that they're being critical, far from it, it's just new to them.

For example Peter King SI's main NFL writer has a Monday Morning QB column...here's an excerpt from today's, where he calls Citeh supporters but jobs.

I got away with my wife to visit my brother and his family in England over the weekend, and we took in a Barclay's Premier League soccer game between Manchester City and the Blackburn Rovers. City won 3-1 in a thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes of sport -- my first big-league soccer game in England.
Lots of interesting things. No drinking in the stands (but a ton of it outside, and underneath the stands), and no constant getting up and down to go get pizza and beer and whatever. I've never seen so many suits and women in fine dresses at a sports event, except maybe for the Kentucky Derby; the sidelines and club seats were thick with fashion plates.
The enthusiasm of the crowd, particularly the end-zone nutjobs, never wavered. From the opening kick to the end of the game to the walk back to Manchester Piccadilly station to the train from Manchester back to my brother's train stop 80 minutes south, the chanting and drunken (I'm assuming) exuberance never stopped

I heard that it goes back to the days of whale hunting in the artic, boats would stop off at a port to get provisions and have fun with the ladies but it was very cold and oral sex was the easiest way of cumming and keeping warm. The shooting sperm resembled the whales blowing water out of their vents when they surfaced for air

I learned it originated in the Victorian era and simply meant "below". Many theories and I guess we'll never know the right answer LOL

as an aside, Peter King, an American football, reporter used the term in his column today too to describe Man City supporters as a compliment

From the opening kick to the end of the game to the walk back to Manchester Piccadilly station to the train from Manchester back to my brother's train stop 80 minutes south, the chanting and drunken (I'm assuming) exuberance never stopped. Some of the chants were silly -- "We got Keith Andrews, who needs Robinho?'' was one of the Rovers fans' favorites, referring to their star and the one from Manchester City they hated -- and most I couldn't comprehend, but they never, ever stopped.

Yellow-coated police formed a barrier in the end zone between the Blackburn and Manchester City supporters, but the cops never had to lift a finger from what I saw.
I walked away wondering if there's anything in America like the constant hum of a 90-minute match with the kind of tradition football in Britain has. I'm not sure there is. Maybe a big college-football rivalry or a Red Sox-Yankees playoff game, or Canadiens-Leafs when both are hot. I don't know. I doubt it. And I wondered: Could an NFL team in London ever hope to generate the kind of fervor this does? I don't see how.
