Toronto FC keeper steals show
Rookie goalie's strong play allows Toronto to emerge with draw against visiting Crew
Daniel Girard

Before kickoff yesterday, Toronto FC rookie goalkeeper Stefan Frei was presented with a stylish new Esquire watch as the team's player of the month for April.
He then turned in a performance making him the early leader for May's award.
Frei made seven saves, including four in the final 22 minutes, as TFC came away with a 1-1 tie against the Columbus Crew before 19,988 fans at BMO Field.

Barrett helps TFC secure draw
PAUL ATTFIELD

TORONTON — In the swirling winds of BMO Field, Toronto FC's bend-but-don't-break philosophy was sufficient to earn a 1-1 draw against the still-winless Columbus Crew on Saturday, but it would have been a non-starter without Stefan Frei in goal.
With his defence parting like the clouds thankfully did in time for the second half, the rookie goalkeeper was called on time and again, and although his run of two successive clean sheets came to an end with Emmanuel Ekpo's 54th-minute goal, Chad Barrett equalized and Frei emerged with his burgeoning reputation still intact.

TFC coach Cummins preaches democracy

He's been officially in charge of Toronto FC for only a few days, but it's fair to say that Chris Cummins cuts an entirely different figure than John Carver.
During his 15 months as coach, Carver, although often engaging, was known for his high level of intensity, and ruled Toronto FC with an iron fist, leaving no doubt as to who was running the show and where the buck stopped.

Barrett secures late draw
THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO -- Toronto FC coach Chris Cummins could live with the point. Robert Warzycha, his Columbus counterpart, was left to rue missed chances and wonder what the Crew have to do to finally get a win this season.
Chad Barrett scored in the 64th minute Saturday to give Toronto a 1-1 tie with Columbus and ensure the MLS champions remained winless this season at 0-2-5. The goal came 10 minutes after Emmanuel Ekpo had put the visitors ahead.

Barrett goal keeps Columbus winless

TORONTO -- Chad Barrett scored in the 64th minute Saturday to give Toronto FC a 1-1 tie with Columbus that kept the MLS champion Crew winless.Toronto (3-2-3) extended its unbeaten streak to three games despite some defensive lapses. The Crew, who lost highly respected coach Sigi Schmid to the Seattle Sounders in the offseason, are now 0-2-5 -- the worst start in Columbus' 14-year history and the worst for a defending champion.

DeRosario fails to get the call
By BILL LANKHOF (bill.lankhof@sunmedia.ca)

iming is everything. Yesterday it was not on Dwayne DeRosario's side.
DeRosario, his hamstring healed enough, replaced Danny Dichio to start the second half. For TFC, it almost paid off with a comeback victory.
He was knocked down just inside the penalty area in extra time.

Toronto FC hold defending MLS champs to tie

Eric Koreen, National Post
TORONTO -- Chris Cummins could not deflect the attention off of himself any more quickly.
After his first game as Toronto FC's official interim coach, a 1-1 draw against Columbus on Saturday, a reporter asked Cummins if he felt that the team was his own.
He basically recoiled as it was being asked.
"It's not my team. It's the club's team. I'm here doing a job. I keep saying, it's not all about me," Cummins said. "It could be someone else sitting here giving you this.

TFC is good and lucky, again
By BILL LANKHOF (bill.lankhof@sunmedia.ca)

The weather was frightful and, for a while yesterday, so was Toronto's Major League Soccer team.
Toronto FC showed nothing to indicate it could beat defending MLS champion Columbus. Defenders tripped on each other; the forwards gave Columbus netminder Andy Gruenebaum a busman's holiday and Toronto's midfielders looked like they were playing in a phone booth. Last year, they would've lost a game like this.

Crew, Reds play to second draw of season

TORONTO -- A 64th-minute goal from Chad Barrett earned Toronto FC a point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday at BMO Field. Emmanuel Ekpo gave the Crew the lead 10 minutes earlier, capping a slaloming dribbling run through the TFC defense with a cool finish. But Barrett's header off of a tremendous cross from Sam Cronin drew the Reds level, despite being outshot 17-5 by a game Columbus side.

Frei stands tall for Reds in draw with Crew

TORONTO -- Toronto FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei lost his chance at a team goalkeeping milestone during Saturday's match with the Columbus Crew, but in the wake of a seven-save performance that salvaged a 1-1 draw, there wasn't any disappointment about this lost entry in the record book. "Stef comes up with big saves for us and he's got a great head on his shoulders," said Toronto FC interim head coach Chris Cummins. "We talk about individuals stepping up the mark and being a difference, and he was the difference again today."
