Meddling by MLS `last straw' for Carver
`It's all about image ... Obviously I wasn't the right image for the league'
Daniel Girard

For John Carver, the last straw was not a fine from Major League Soccer for publicly criticizing officials.
It came when he was told, after coaching Toronto FC to its biggest win of the young season from high atop the pitch at BMO Field, the league was ordering him back to the sidelines for the next game.
"You can only put up with so much," Carver told the Toronto Star in an interview yesterday, two days after news broke of his resignation as head coach six games into his second season.

Junior Academy team opens with win
Makubuya scores twice against Shooters

In extreme weather conditions the Junior Academy Program opened up their preseason campaign with a 2-1 win against Italia Shooters reserves on Saturday at Esther Shiner Stadium. It was a testing day for both squads as weather conditions impacted the quality of the football played. However, the Junior Academy had the better scoring chances as a combined squad of trialists and squad players battled the elements.

2009 Power Rankings: Week 6 Comment

http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/4772.gif 1 (1) Chivas USA (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=4772) 5-1-1 The new, improved and slimmed-down Zach Thornton has resurrected his career in goal for Chivas. However, midfielder Sacha Kljestan is still in a deep funk.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/182.gif 2 (2) Chicago (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=182) 2-0-4 Brian McBride is finding his stride with his MLS-leading fifth goal. However, Fire settle for another 2-2 tie.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/4771.gif 3 (6) Real Salt Lake (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=4771) 3-2-0 An absolutely dominant performance, as the eye-catching 6-0 score was a true representation against overmatched New England. RSL outshot its foe 29-6.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/9726.gif 4 (4) Seattle Sounders FC (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=9726) 4-2-0 Kasey Keller's return helps to end Seattle's two-game losing streak. He's been the best goalkeeper in MLS bar none.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/7318.gif 5 (10) Toronto FC (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=7318) 3-2-2 Things looked bleak a week back, but two wins at home help brighten the mood -- at least until John Carver's stunning resignation.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/186.gif 6 (5) Kansas City (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=186) 3-3-1 Wizards suffer tough loss in Toronto, but Curt Onalfo's boys are in a lot better shape than they were at the beginning of the month.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/189.gif 7 (3) New England (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=189) 2-1-2 Back down to earth with a bump after a great start. Youth gets you only so far, but experience is what you need when under the cosh.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/184.gif 8 (7) Colorado (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=184) 2-2-2 The Rapids' inability to garner more points at home is one of the league's great mysteries.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/193.gif 9 (9) DC United (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=193) 2-1-3 After just a month in MLS, Chris Pontius is making a strong case for Rookie of the Year.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/6077.gif 10 (11) Houston (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=6077) 1-2-2 A week off gives the Dynamo a chance to regroup, but they are already 11 points behind the leaders in the West. Ade Akinbiyi will not be the answer.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/183.gif 11 (8) Columbus (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=183) 0-2-4 It can't get much worse than this for the defending MLS champs who are stinking up the joint right now.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/191.gif 12 (13) San Jose (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=191) 1-3-2 Were there really some people out there that thought this team was a potential MLS Cup winner?
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/190.gif 13 (12) New York Red Bulls (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=190) 1-4-2 Juan Carlos Osorio's tinkering isn't taking; The Red Bulls have already used a league-high 24 players. He did have a plan, right?
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/187.gif 14 (15) Los Angeles (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=187) 0-1-4 A point at Colorado is another good sign but the wins have to start coming soon. Landon Donovan has scored or assisted on each of the Galaxy's six goals so far this season.
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/i/clubhouse/badges/185.gif 15 (14) Dallas (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=185) 1-4-1 Dario Sala's red card is just the latest indication of FCD's defensive ineptitude.

MLS truely is shite. They dicate to our (former) manager where he may or may not sit and now they 'prefer', not to respond - hypocrites.

So what if he wants to call the game from the press box. MLS is all about 1 thing, control. That's why it's a single entity and players sign with the league not the team. One day it may change but until then this is the garbage we have to deal with.

I hope Carver ends up watching the game next to me when he returns later in the season. :)

SSG - nice, not a fan of the hair.

Coed - yummy as always.

I don't have a problem with single-entity in theory, but in practice the league is way to heavy-handed. Also there is a real problem with transperancy, no-one really knows what is going on.

http://www.metronews.ca/toronto/Sports/article/219739--concacaf-cancels-rest-of-under-17-soccer-tournament-in-mexico-over-swine-flu

NEW YORK - The remainder of a youth football tournament in Mexico was cancelled on Monday because of fears about the swine flu epidemic and Mexico City's top football clubs said they expected to keeping playing behind closed doors in an effort to slow the outbreak.

CONCACAF, the governing body of football in North and Central America and the Caribbean, said its under-17 tournament in the border city of Tijuana had been called off. Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and the United States had already clinched berths in the under-17 World Cup. They were to play semifinals on Wednesday with the finals and third-place game set for Saturday.

Canada was eliminated from the tournament over the weekend and the team travelled by bus Sunday morning to San Diego. Players made their way home from there Sunday and Monday.

The football body also postponed the second leg of its Champions League final on Wednesday in Cancun between Mexican clubs Cruz Azul and Atlante. The game will be played May 12. Atlante leads the two-game series, winning the first leg 2-0.

CONCACAF said the move was made "to safeguard the health of players, officials and fans."

Interesting, that in the Star article, it says that Carver chose the 4-3-3 formation. So he deserves at least part of the credit for the win.

I'd tend to give credit to Cummins for the subs on Wednesday, and of course he did them on Sunday. Very intelligently done, and helped to seal the win.

Good to hear some truth coming out about the situation with Carver. Too bad there is nothing we can do about it. What a load of crap that they tell him where he should be for the game. If MLSE chooses to hire him and are ok with where he sits to watch the game then why should the league care. Walter Smith from Rangers stays in private boxes almost all the time and comes down to the sidelines at necessary times in the match. I don't see the issue. What a pile of crap.

Well, I feel bad now that I ripped into Carver in the other thread. I still think it was a rash decision, but at least now I understand his reasoning.

Still think he should have toughed it out, though.
