Dichio shines on Sunday
By RYAN JOHNSTON

TORONTO -- If anyone was to make Toronto FC supporters forget about John Carver, it was going to be Danny Dichio.
The dearly beloved Dichio scored his first goal of the season in Toronto's 1-0 win over Kansas City on Sunday at BMO Field;
one day after the dearly departed Carver announced he was resigning as coach due to personal reasons.

Toronto FC suddenly grabs top spot
Shakes off weekend of tumult for stylish victory over Kansas City
Daniel Girard

It's a new era and a new position – first place.
Toronto FC players, stunned by Saturday's resignation of head coach John Carver, put the off-field distractions aside last night to defeat the Kansas City Wizards 1-0 at BMO Field, vaulting to the top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference standing.
"We've had a hard couple of days, as you've all seen, and we just wanted to get that win," said Danny Dichio, who scored on a low, right-footed shot from about 10 yards that snuck just inside the left post past a diving Kevin Hartman in the 54th minute.

Changing of the guard spurs troops
PAUL ATTFIELD

TORONTO — "We need to put the era of John Carver behind us now."
While Toronto FC director of soccer Mo Johnston waited until after yesterday's 1-0 win over the Kansas City Wizards to draw a line under what he described as a "traumatic week," it was patently clear that this passage in the team's history had actually come to an end Wednesday evening.
When assistant coach Chris Cummins signed off on a new-look team sheet in Carver's stead that night it signalled a changing of the guard. With Carver out of the dugout, the team played with a freedom and attacking flair sadly missing from the first five games, running out a 1-0 winner over league-leading Chivas USA. That may just have been the final straw for the Englishman.

Toronto FC top Kansas City 1-0
John F. Molinaro

As far as excuses go, Toronto FC had a great one to cite had things not gone their way.
Instead, Toronto blocked out all distractions and put in a thoroughly professional display with a 1-0 win over the visiting Kansas City Wizards on Sunday evening at BMO Field.
The match was played under a cloud of uncertainty a little more than 24 hours after John Carver dropped a bomb by announcing his resignation as Toronto coach, with the Englishman citing "personal reasons" for his decision to walk away after 15 months in charge.

Health at crux of Carver's exit
By LANCE HORNBY (lance.hornby@sunmedia.ca)

Having their head coach quit barely a month into the regular season caused great unrest in the Toronto FC office and dressing room this week, but no one wanted John Carver's health to suffer.
And there seemed to be a valid concern in that area that led in part to his resignation this week, with the official cause linked to his ongoing battles with Major League Soccer's philosophy and officiating.
"He had certain things, and I don't want to go into that because that's John's private life," manager Mo Johnston said last night, his first comments since the 44-year-old Carver's departure became official on Saturday.

Johnston Talks About Carver's Resignation
By Mark Polishuk / MLSnet.com Staff

TORONTO -- John Carver's surprising resignation as the head coach of Toronto FC left the team's players, coaching staff and management all somewhat stunned that the man who has led the Reds since the start of the 2008 season would no longer be roaming the BMO Field sidelines. "We sat down with the coaches the other night after JC had handed in his resignation and it was difficult," said Mo Johnston, TFC's manager and director of soccer. "We weren't happy campers but it's started to sink in. It's started to settle in. ... We need to put the era of John Carver behind us and move forward."

Long Week Ends With Win
By Mark Polishuk / MLSnet.com Staff

TORONTO -- Arguably the busiest eight-day stretch in Toronto FC's short history ended exactly how the club wanted -- with the Reds in first place. In a week that included two other games, an injury to star midfielder Dwayne De Rosario and the surprise resignation of head coach John Carver, TFC came into Sunday's match with the Kansas City Wizards using the tumult of the previous days as motivation -- and the 1-0 result indicates that the mindset worked.
"I don't think it was a distraction, I think it may egged us on a little bit," said forward Danny Dichio. "We wanted to show we have a great team spirit here and no matter what happens with the [coaching] staff or any of that ... we have to go out and show the fans that we're strong as a unit."

Two & counting
Cummins off to a big start
By LANCE HORNBY (lance.hornby@sunmedia.ca)

With two wins to his credit and the team in top spot, you can say Chris Cummins has a good chance of landing the Toronto FC job for the balance of this MLS season.
Cummins and assistant Nick Dasovic made FC (3-2-2) stand for First in Conference last evening as it beat the Kansas City Wizards 1-0 at BMO Field on Danny Dichio's goal in the 54th minute.
Manager Mo Johnston said the coaching situation would be addressed tomorrow.

Questions abound, but no answer to Carver departure
Garth Woolsey (http://www.thestar.com/opinion/columnists/94652)

Who needs him? Not apparently Toronto FC.
Cruel but true, the professional sporting life goes on for the (presto!) first-place team without head coach John Carver. He was nowhere to be found for yesterday's thoroughly entertaining and convincing 1-0 win over the Kansas City Wizards at BMO Field.
But for one reason or another – there are many, apparently – the man they call J.C. doesn't need Toronto FC, either.

Reds Hang On For Victory
Dichio Scores Lone Goal
By Mark Polishuk / MLSnet.com Staff

TORONTO -- A second-half goal from Danny Dichio put Toronto FC atop the Eastern Conference after a 1-0 win against the Kansas City Wizards on Sunday evening at BMO Field. Dichio's conversion after a nice pair of passes from Marvell Wynne and Sam Cronin was the only score for Toronto on an impressive attacking performance for the side. It was the second consecutive victory for TFC and their first since the surprise resignation of head coach John Carver on Saturday. Assistant coaches Chris Cummins (who also led the team last Wednesday with Carver watching from a private box) and Nick Dasovic were in charge of the team on Sunday.

Johnston hints MLS officials drove Carver to resignation
By Eric Koreen

TORONTO — After the first training session of the week on Tuesday, then-Toronto FC coach John Carver took the reporters on hand aside for a tutorial.
He cued up several plays from a 3-2 loss to FC Dallas two days earlier that he thought featured questionable officiating.
“Do you see what I’m dealing with?” Carver rhetorically asked the reporters on hand.

Lots of reading today. I'm glad to see that we get the good coverage we deserve. I wanted Vitti to pot one yesterday so badly. I still think he will have double digits by the end of the season.

SSG's aren't too shabby just no the usual.

First in the East.

Gotta pinch myself. I'm so used to our team being "loveable losers" with "great support," it's hard to adjust to having a winning team. Must... adjust...

don't worry, there's still lots of games left in the season, and we can still go either way.

I think it's going to be a nail-biter of a season.

Credit where due. Daniel Girard has done a good job of covering the team this year in the Star. Nothing fancy, just straightforward reporting. Don't miss all the silly personal agendas that the idiot and Morgan Campbell brought to their coverage.

Wish Norm Da Costa would get back into column writing for them. He was excellent.

And in case John Molinaro was wondering if he'd make good press-box company, he is a charming and knowledgeable chap to talk soccer with.

nice to see us at the top... but there are several teams with a game in hand on us... things could change quickly.
Hopefully the momentum will continue to build though...

Yes normalizng for games in hand, it's basically 5 teams within a point or two of each other in the east

but it's sweet, we're one of the five, and NY and Columbus aren't

Man, the whole story with Carver is turning into a regular Soap Opera isn't it? So many theories and opinions.

Looking at the positive, at least we've got people talking about the team.

I think the principals involved have brought this on themselves. First by insisting for days that nothing was going on, then by sorta kinda pinning it on Carver's health.

None of which changes the only real fact that we know, which is that TFC made massive lineup and formation changes the second Carver stepped out of the picture.

Geez, Cummins doesn't even have his own wiki page.

I bet he used to be Aquaman or something like that.
