Recession is hitting US attendances in some places, although I suspect the number below for Columbus is just par for the course.

From Steve Goff's W. Post blog.

After sluggish attendance figures early in the season, it was nice to see these strong numbers: 20,272 in Toronto, 23,317 in Los Angeles and 28,746 in Seattle. On the flip side, defending champion Columbus is averaging 11,000 after two home dates, including just 7,465 on Saturday. Weather at kickoff was 49 degrees and clear.

wow..... that's a big showing for Seattle. And I like seeing that people are still going out to watch LA play even though they know that Beckham won't be there.

That was for the SuperClassico (LAG v CUSA), derby match.

Anything less than a sellout is usually low for the SuperClassico. That said, 23k is a helluva lot better than 7k and change. Anything around 7k is a complete embarrassment for a Saturday game.

^ Agreed, which just makes the "fans of the year" award from those two morons last season even more ridiculous.

7k - what an appalling turn out. :noidea:

What a joke Columbus is. 7465 came out for them on Saturday? Pathetic.

Great numbers for Seattle, though.

KC pulled in less than 7k two saturdays ago.... However, the weather was pretty bad to say the least.

I just checked out ebay and there is a shit load of tfc season tickets getting sold. This explains empty seats that would have otherwise been filled last season.

Everybody thinks the 14 000 waiting list is only made up of die hard fans, I tend to think there are plenty of die hard scalpers on there too.

weren't there a slew of AP articles early in the season saying MLS won't have any attendance slumps and the league is doing everything correctly? Perhaps they were blinded only by us and Seattle.. I can't say much for any other teams

The KKKrew don't count. Soccer moms don't show up in cold weather.

No, it didn't say that. It said MLS was better prepared to handle an economic downturn than other leagues. That doesn't assume that attendance will stay level with last year, just that they'll be economically stronger at the end of it.

Columbus Crew and KC fans can thank TFC and Seattle for subsidizing them, given the disproportionate revenue TFC and Seattle must be giving to the league :)

7k in columbus is embarassing. Even Salt Lake is getting only 11 or 12 WITH the new stadium.

On the plus side, TFC and Seattle have set the bar really high now and MLS can strive for more of the same from any new franchises that buy in (or are relocated). In fairness, when the league was just starting up there was no way they could be that choosy about who they let in, and some level of kudos is fair to the original and early franchises who started this whole thing up and have stuck with it. Without them, there would be no league for the lifes of TFC and Seattle to play in.

But yeah, given the current level of MLS, 7k is still crappy beyond belief.

Getting that number with a brand new stadium is very dissapointing...

Columbus getting 7k - I can only think the league will start to at least ponder moving the club - just think about options...
