But for those who think that decision – "probably one of the hardest in my life" – means the end of his playing days is close at hand, Robinson, 32, says think again.

Ottawa city council threw cold water on Eugene Melnyk’s plans to build a soccer-specific stadium Monday, calling their business plan “below expectations” and sending them back to the drawing board.

For Melnyk, it’s a massive blow. Despite not being included in the 2011 expansion, it was quietly being suggested that MLS commissioner Don Garber still favoured their bid, and if they could get a stadium deal done, they were a shoe-in for 2012 or 2013.

Melnyk will hold a press conference next week to address where they see their bid going. At this point, it’s going nowhere unless they pair their bid with Jeff Hunt and his CFL hopes.

Looking at how things are developing, I'm gonna hazard a prediction and say that if Ottawa is going to get a new stadium and pro sports team, it will be part of a CFL franchise deal under Hunt's management. I don't think MLS has the time to wait around for Melnyk to get his house in order.

QFT.

As usual the city of Ottawa is in "analysis paralysis" about what to do with the stadium proposals in general and Lansdowne park in particular.

The residents of the city are upset with the lack of proper public transportation and see the stadium/professional sports proposals as a diversion of funds and effort.

The need to fix the cities infrastructure means that the sports promoters will have to fund greater portions themselves and they didn't get to be rich by taking unreasonable risks.

The CFL group proposal has a leg up simply due to its dealing with the inner city site that the city already owns and has to spend money maintaining at present.

Last home game for the Senators this evening... and then no organized sports, of a pro or semi pro variety, will exist in the city for the whole summer! :(

I hope Melnyk digs in his heels. Get a new proposal and forget groundshare. MLS doesn't need more of it.

You know, it's kind of funny Ottawa telling Melnyk his business is flawed...

Maybe Melnyk needs to cough up a little more of his own cash.. cuz I don't believe the Hunt group was gonna contribute anything of its own. This could be just the first step of a negotiation.

Did you guys see the Canadiens are up for sale by Gillett, and an article I read elsewhere was that Georgey was the one who suggested they lowball MLS on the entrance fee. Now 10 groups have been given private access to examine the Canadiens financial books, and Saputo is one of those groups. He's probably too cheap to buy the Canadiens, but if he did, that might solidify a second MLS expansin bid attempt (along with actually paying the proper fee ;)

Melnyk will end up the winner in the long run....sorry but the CFL in Ottawa has been done to death...no one cares about that league
the only Canadian city smart enough not to support it..

Flawed story. Incomplete reporting... as usual.
Makes no reference to what the city would do about the Ottawa 67's hockey team. They cannot play in kanata... it would kill the team.

Hunt, from the Landsdowne live group, owns the 67's and the city must decide what to do as far as assisting them as the civic centre arena is in dire need of repair.
