Undeserved Scrutiny

After surviving the 70km/h biting winds off Lake Ontario and a heavy heart from the 2-0 defeat at the home opener, Sunday morning was going to prove difficult enough to crawl out of bed. But then to be greeted with the shocking discovery in one local daily, penned by the city's most famous doom merchant, that the club I love was on the cusp of a "ticking time bomb" was enough to go back under the covers. Not out of fear, I mind you, but rather from the overambitious absurdity of how an individual can turn an inch into a mile despite the absence of substance.
Several times I have written on the traditional media's ignorance of soccer, particularly because it is not considered "big" by the commercial standards of North America - which themselves are now in question. But suddenly soccer had become the focus for this local sports coroner not because he saw the positive start to Toronto's third season with 4 points on the road before coming home. But he was out patrolling the grounds hoping to find villains and catch them in the act of "hooliganism" to garner headlines.

Hold on a second, folks...let's not misconstrue this as an official response from TFC. It's an opinion piece written by one of their staffers appearing on their website, not a media release.

It's very encouraging, but I'd still like to see some sort of official release from the club.

Now a days with brand management being so important I doubt that the corporate blog was not vetted by the communications department.

even though it's not an official release or anything like that,
they did call out some local reporters in (online) print for everyone to see.

After several days of mulling it over, I've come to the following conclusion:

Very true and on their own website...someone at the big club had to approve this for it to be posted....

Exactly my point about it not being an official release.

Like I said, it's a very encouraging sign, but an official press release would be nicer. Not that I expect that to happen (nor am I asking for it).

At least if they put the name on this thing we'd know where it's coming from.

All you need to know is that it's from a TFC staffer, which - as mentioned previously - almost certainly means it was vetted and scrutinized by someone in authority at the club.

Quite possibly one of the most well-written and thought-out articles I've read in several months.
