This is something I like to do when we play European competition, check out their forums and see what they're saying about us. So I checked out the MCFC forums and this has the most stuff in one place. I'd check out Tigres and Milan as well but I suspect those wouldn't be in English.

Another thread, same kind of thing, TFCA is described as tough by media but City fans seem to think it will be a cakewalk given how our academy is only a year old.

Not an unfair comment, particularly in that the Milan team is supposed to be a weaker side and the MCFC team is the youth FA Cup winning team.

Wow, Vancouver are in easy group compare to TFC.

Well we have to be weary from judging the toughness of a group simply based on how good the senior club is. Remember, this is the academies/U-18 teams and can be completely different from the senior team in relative skill. Of course, the name of the club is important (monetary resources are important) but it's not the be all end all.

I guess in short is that it's very difficult to determine which group is the toughest.

im sure after the great results they are getting from this tournament,
you better believe its not going to be their last

considering Dallas cup is considered to be top 5 youth tournament in the world,

so they should go to MIC Cup (Mediterranean International Cup) thats a presitgous tournament

you never know we might see TFC at the FIFA Youth CUp

Ha, that was me.

I was being objective. Their academy is incredible. I'm a little torn on this one, but I have to pull for City - at least their academy players can play for their team eventually! Hell, there's probably just as good of a chance of a player from the City Academy playing for TFC in the future as a player from the Toronto academy!

Come on you Purples!

Edit: Oops, quoted the wrong message. And I'm hardly talking shit about our academy. I'm sorry, but it would be shocking to me if the TFC academy competes well against the reigning FA Youth Cup winners.

regarding the academy progress issue -- i was interested to see the disagreement Vancouver had with MLS. Vancouver has not finalized an agreement on what happens with their academy. Lenarduzzi said MLS wants to look at Vancouver's model. With the CBA negotiations coming up this year, and Vancouver on the way, I have a better feeling about possible changes to the academy setup by 2011.

I still don't understand why the restrictions are so absolutely harsh (maybe they don't want to undermine the college system???). I know that MLS is worried about competitive balance (some cities just don't have the same pool of youth to draw upon), but even teams with the best youth pools can't sign every single academy kid anyways. They'll find a couple, and that's great for MLS. The rest that a great academy would develop would migrate to other teams to find jobs. As well, if teams are graduating many academy players to the main team, that means other players (college players maybe?) will be displaced -- fodder for other MLS teams without strong academies to sign.
Not to mention that a good academy kid will probably come cheaper than an international (a cost savings for MLS). Hopefully Vancouver's example influences MLS.

I suspect youre right rocker. The current academy situation is incredibly outdated and im sure the league knows it, im also sure we will see some FO's that were late to move for whatever reason (generally greediness and the Krafts come to mind immediately) will prob oppose with the majority in favor. Im definitely looking forward to the changes that the CBA might incur on the same hand its not the best time financially for anyone so i do hope that that doesnt effect it too much

Just my view, so take it for what it's worth...

The Man City academy is obviously well organized and well prepared for the game and for the pressure.

That being said, I think that we will be flying out of the gates, we will be quick, and bring a fast, upbeat pace to the game. I hope to dis-orient Citeh, basically hit them so hard that their heads start spinning.

They are probably not use to our style, and are going to go into the game underestimating us...way underestimating us!! which will be great for us. Citeh will be very complacent and thinking it's gonna be a cakewalk....Neely and Bent will guide our troops to VICTORY!!!

I predict 2-nil for us at the half and a TFC WIN 3-1 final!!

Come on Neely!! Come on Bent!!! COME ON YOU RED's!!!!!!!!

I have one question about the TFC-A, is it still a NCAA Friendly program, what makes me bring this is that Amadou Sanyang (http://toronto.fc.mlsnet.com/players/bio.jsp?team=t280&player=sanyang_a&playerId=san771006&statType=current) is currently playing for them and he has signed a MLS contract with the Reds. NCAA rules say elgibility is lost when you play on the same team as a pro.

What makes me bring this up is if this is the case, the TFC entry in the CSL could become a combination of a reserve/academy team. With no MLS reserve league this year it could be a good place to get some of the bench players some competitive minutes especially with three goaltenders on the roster.

According the MLS Player Associaition site Sanyang had a salary for $40, 563.55 as of March 15th, 2009. I wonder how the MLS/TFC would explain to the NCAA that he is not currently a pro if an issue came up in regarding to one of the Academy player getting a scholarship. I know Tyler Hemming had his elgibility come into question after player for London City of the CSL during one summer.

Because he's not actually getting paid yet. The contract represents his compensation for the entire season; but they're likely banking it until he moves to the senior team, then giving the two Gambians a living allowance or something.

Thanks for the info, I figured it was something like that, with Gomez on the roster already he could have invited Sanyang to stay at his place since he is already collecting a MLS paycheck, it would likely be a little more organized than that but you get the drift.
