perhaps all the negative press was a boost for viewers to tune in and expect to see the stadium being burned to the ground.

That is reasonably good news.

I hope they don't disappear after the performance on the field though.

Those ratings arent a good thing.

I cant imagine many of those viewers went away thinking 'I cant wait to watch more of that'.

IMO...especially if TFC has a good run this year, and Vancouver coming into the league...then by 2012..soccer will only per surpassed (in viewership) by hockey...nobody gives f*ck about the Craptors and interest in baseball has been waning for years...

It is too bad they don't broadcast all our games but I guess it makes sense, away games are not as exciting as the home ones.

put it this way... After 40 fricken years were still catching leafs games and radio broadcasts at record numbers and with no championship in site..

the true fact is that toronto and the gta has some seriously devoted fans.. im sure tfc will lose alittle but they will eventually be back again.

I think those empty seats were a result of the people who bought tickets and tried to sell them on ebay and KIJIJI the site I bought mine from had something like 20 left friday night at five.....I think the scalping market is oversatuated and as a result a lot of these guys just lost money...serves them right!

Just for comparison:

The first CBC game in 2007 had a rating of 188,000.

The first CBC game in 2008 had a rating of 108,000.

I got the numbers here: http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=676383

What was the highest rating for a TFC game last year, I seem to remember some over 100,000 viewers but also there were some with like 20,000- 25,000. I remember one game during the first season was like 15,000.

I think this season the best ratings will come from CBC while the worst will come from GOL, that will just happen due to the fact that CBC is available in far more homes than the latter.

Sportsnet will come somewhere in the middle, depending on how much of the network it will be shown on, I think if it is going accross all four channels it will come in closer to CBC than GOL. I will be interested to see how GOL's broadcast rates compared to how the Score did during its two years of doing games, or to be proper broadcasting games because I can not actually remember if the ever did a broadcast of their own or just picked up the one from the oppenent, who loved those Galaxy guys.

I'm not sure Gol TV even gets rated. Not all channels sign up for that.

I don't think Gol will do that poorly... what you seem to forget is that people that DO have Gol TV are also WAY more likely to tune into a TFC match then any other tv viewer.

Gol has been good so far, good pre/post match shows, the feed from the US stations have not been the best but thats not gols fault...If i had my
way all TFC games would be on Gol..but thats me...

I found this over at BS taken from the Globe, I think the CBC drop came from the fact that quite a few games were shown on their Bold/CC channel rather than the main network. Also the is quite a difference when Sportsnet shows it across the country rather than in just one or two of its regions.

Toronto FC's poor season produced a mixed bag of TV audiences. The CBC averaged 85,000 viewers for 13 telecasts, down 35 per cent from last year's 130,000. Rogers Sportsnet averaged 49,300 for eight games, up 51 per cent. The Score's average for six telecasts was 35,000, up 28 per cent.

empty seats = scalpers!!!

we can't be upset that there were empty seats at BMO...it just means that TFC/ticketmaster/etc sell too many tickets to people that aren't fans! if there was a limit of 4 or 6, people couldn't buy 100 (scalpers) and try to make a profit...

empty seats means people weren't dumb enough to pay $90 for $23 seats!!!!

don't worry about who's not at the game (that's their loss) worry about those fans that do show up!!

i hope you're right, but my worry is they make enoguh money on the sales they do make to more than off-set their losses on unsold tickets.

besides, i think if we'd had 15 degrees and sunshine with nothing more than a gentle breeze the place would have been at capacity.

I hate to be negative, but...

The numbers would have got a bump by Seattle fans in the lower mainland.

(but it is interesting that they beat the Raptors in Ontario)

How many of those, really? Seattle and Vancouver have been bitter rivals in USL1 for the past several years.

Holy cow, I really dont understand the negative perception on this...my initial reaction was wow...those are pretty impressive ratings. They beat the raptors in Ontario which to me is a HUGE deal notwithstanding the raptors are having a horrible year. And the national numbers are also impressive.

I wouldn't say 'bitter' rivals. We save our bile for those feckless fucks in Portland.

I would say about 1/3 of the people I know watched the game on CBC rather than on FSC. However, I would guess that the CBC ratings don't include any US viewers, but I really have no idea.

I'm sure there was a 'Ljungberg' factor to this game. I'd be shocked if the 'Cunningham' factor brings in as many viewers :)

I would have hoped for something more than 140K for the opener, but if we can AVERAGE 140K through the season (ON CBC), that would be significant.

Almost double the Raptors in Ontario. That is significant. Yes, it was game one for TFC and yes the Raptors are down and out but it is a number that will surprise some of the old guard.

... and as for next week and the rest of the season, a winning team wouldn't hurt would it! Let's hope!!!

I wouldn't say nobody cares about the Raptors.

They are among league leaders in the NBA in both attendance and season ticket sales. We sell out most games, outside of when we play really bad teams. When the team was making playoffs, we sold out every game, were on National TV in America, and had great ratings.

A lot of people are also boycotting Raptors games right now because TSN decided to put a ton of games on TSN2 (like last nights game). Making it impossible for most people to watch it, as Rogers does not offer TSN2.

They are one of the most valuable teams in the NBA, being valued at 400 million by Forbes. Which is just 44 million less then the Leafs and 356 million more then TFC. Their operating income is also one of the most in the NBA.

Not to mention Steve Nash may be joining the Raptors next season if PHX decides to terminate his contract after this season. (He said he wants to play here and he loves JT).

The Raptors may also be drafting DeMar DeRozan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4nptX_MCxY). Who just declared for the draft this morning. He is pretty much a carbon copy playing style wise as Vince Carter (obviously needs to improve). Draft Express has us picking him at number 9.

TFC has a long way to go before they match the Raptors in support level. I would love to see it, and I would love to see MLS grow, but give it some time.

more performances like Saturday and the numbers will drop dramatically.

also the Rap game was a nothing game. the team isn't going to the playoffs and interest in the team has gone down. Comparing #'s to the Raps doesn't mean much.
