Mornin,
Sounders shut out TFC
PAUL ATTFIELD
TORONTO — It took just a quarter of an hour for someone to highlight the gulf in class between the two sides at BMO Field. The fact that someone was former Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg should come as no surprise.
The one-time captain of the Swedish national team took just two touches to provide the winning margin, the first to teammate Nate Jacqua, and the second to dispatch the return ball past the despairing dive of Toronto FC goalkeeper Greg Sutton.

Toronto FC's 'backsides kicked': Coach
John Carver rips TFC for brutal effort following defeat in home opener
Daniel Girard
So much for all the optimism.
Toronto FC, riding high after a win and a tie to open their third Major League Soccer season, returned home – and down to earth – yesterday, losing 2-0 to the Seattle Sounders.
"It was a disgrace," coach John Carver said of TFC's effort. "We've had our backsides kicked."

TFC's effort was 'a disgrace': Carver
There wasn't any smoke coming out of John Carver's ears.
He didn't stomp his feet, kick any trash cans, or pound his fist on the table.
It was a calm and composed Carver, someone who was in complete control, who fielded questions in the media room at BMO Field following Toronto FC's 2-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday.
Toronto's coach was famous for wearing his emotions on his sleeve and letting the heat of the moment overcome him in the majority of post-game news conferences last season.
Not this time.

Expansion Sounders spoil Toronto FC homecoming
Seattle Sounders FC certainly don't play like a first-year MLS soccer club.
Seattle kept its undefeated streak intact by spoiling Toronto FC's home debut with a 2-0 victory on Saturday at BMO Field.
Freddie Ljungberg and No. 1 overall pick Steve Zakuani provided the goals for Seattle, giving the expansion team its third consecutive victory to start the season.

TFC silenced in opener
By Ryan Johnston
TORONTO -- When it is cold outside the only way to stay warm at an outdoor sporting event is to cheer. On Saturday, Toronto FC fans nearly froze to death as Toronto lost its home opener to the Seattle Sounders 2-0 at BMO Field.
After two games on the road (1-1-0) to start the year, a typically Canadian spring afternoon welcomed the team back to the city to begin the first of its 15 home dates. But it was an atypical home-field performance from the usually reliable Reds that led to its first loss of the season.

Weather, or not?
By Ryan Johnston
As Marvell Wynne accepted the Man of the (Mis)Match trophy a colleague and I discussed (http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20090404&content_id=235438&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp) how all week Toronto FC trained indoors and then on match day the team looked like it had forgotten how unpredictable the elements in Canada can be come April.
Just coincidence, you say.
All week the Seattle Sounders trained outdoors and on Saturday it handily beat its opponent on a cold, windy afternoon by the lake. Not a stretch from the cold rain the team sloshed around in at BMO on Friday. Or the snow it trained in a week ago in Seattle. (http://www.soundersfc.com/media-library/Videos/Features/2009/04-April/090401-Let-It-snow.aspx)
Mere coincidence, TFC has five Canadians in the starting 11, you say.

Ljungberg fires up Sounders
By LORI EWING, THE CANADIAN PRESS
Freddie Ljungberg has long grown accustomed to the spotlight as one of soccer's most recognizable figures, whether it's on the pitch delivering precision passes or posing for underwear ads as the former face of Calvin Klein.
Still, the Swedish midfielder was surprised by the rock-star reception he has received in Seattle.

Disappointing Result For Reds In Home Opener
TORONTO -- After a season-opening win in Kansas City and a draw last week against the defending MLS Cup champions in Columbus, Toronto FC entered their home opener against Seattle looking to make a statement that they were going to be one of the league's elite teams in 2009. Unfortunately for the Reds, the statement ended up being that the team's road to improvement won't be an easy one in the wake of a 2-0 defeat to Sounders FC.
"It was disappointing, simple as that," said defender Kevin Harmse. "We had some good points on the road in the first two games and ... I don't know, [it was a] bad day at the office. We were second to everything, not nearly good enough."
