Mornin,

Sounders shut out TFC
PAUL ATTFIELD

TORONTO — It took just a quarter of an hour for someone to highlight the gulf in class between the two sides at BMO Field. The fact that someone was former Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg should come as no surprise.
The one-time captain of the Swedish national team took just two touches to provide the winning margin, the first to teammate Nate Jacqua, and the second to dispatch the return ball past the despairing dive of Toronto FC goalkeeper Greg Sutton.

Toronto FC's 'backsides kicked': Coach
John Carver rips TFC for brutal effort following defeat in home opener
Daniel Girard

So much for all the optimism.
Toronto FC, riding high after a win and a tie to open their third Major League Soccer season, returned home – and down to earth – yesterday, losing 2-0 to the Seattle Sounders.
"It was a disgrace," coach John Carver said of TFC's effort. "We've had our backsides kicked."

TFC's effort was 'a disgrace': Carver

There wasn't any smoke coming out of John Carver's ears.
He didn't stomp his feet, kick any trash cans, or pound his fist on the table.
It was a calm and composed Carver, someone who was in complete control, who fielded questions in the media room at BMO Field following Toronto FC's 2-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday.
Toronto's coach was famous for wearing his emotions on his sleeve and letting the heat of the moment overcome him in the majority of post-game news conferences last season.
Not this time.

Expansion Sounders spoil Toronto FC homecoming

Seattle Sounders FC certainly don't play like a first-year MLS soccer club.
Seattle kept its undefeated streak intact by spoiling Toronto FC's home debut with a 2-0 victory on Saturday at BMO Field.
Freddie Ljungberg and No. 1 overall pick Steve Zakuani provided the goals for Seattle, giving the expansion team its third consecutive victory to start the season.

TFC silenced in opener
By Ryan Johnston
TORONTO -- When it is cold outside the only way to stay warm at an outdoor sporting event is to cheer. On Saturday, Toronto FC fans nearly froze to death as Toronto lost its home opener to the Seattle Sounders 2-0 at BMO Field.

After two games on the road (1-1-0) to start the year, a typically Canadian spring afternoon welcomed the team back to the city to begin the first of its 15 home dates. But it was an atypical home-field performance from the usually reliable Reds that led to its first loss of the season.

Weather, or not?
By Ryan Johnston

As Marvell Wynne accepted the Man of the (Mis)Match trophy a colleague and I discussed (http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20090404&content_id=235438&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp) how all week Toronto FC trained indoors and then on match day the team looked like it had forgotten how unpredictable the elements in Canada can be come April.
Just coincidence, you say.
All week the Seattle Sounders trained outdoors and on Saturday it handily beat its opponent on a cold, windy afternoon by the lake. Not a stretch from the cold rain the team sloshed around in at BMO on Friday. Or the snow it trained in a week ago in Seattle. (http://www.soundersfc.com/media-library/Videos/Features/2009/04-April/090401-Let-It-snow.aspx)
Mere coincidence, TFC has five Canadians in the starting 11, you say.

Ljungberg fires up Sounders
By LORI EWING, THE CANADIAN PRESS

Freddie Ljungberg has long grown accustomed to the spotlight as one of soccer's most recognizable figures, whether it's on the pitch delivering precision passes or posing for underwear ads as the former face of Calvin Klein.
Still, the Swedish midfielder was surprised by the rock-star reception he has received in Seattle.

Disappointing Result For Reds In Home Opener

TORONTO -- After a season-opening win in Kansas City and a draw last week against the defending MLS Cup champions in Columbus, Toronto FC entered their home opener against Seattle looking to make a statement that they were going to be one of the league's elite teams in 2009. Unfortunately for the Reds, the statement ended up being that the team's road to improvement won't be an easy one in the wake of a 2-0 defeat to Sounders FC.
"It was disappointing, simple as that," said defender Kevin Harmse. "We had some good points on the road in the first two games and ... I don't know, [it was a] bad day at the office. We were second to everything, not nearly good enough."

Woke up feeling worse about the team. This game's going to linger for a long time. It'll give confidence to every team coming in here.

Where did the Edu money go?

Cathal Kelly is a hack journalist who obviously was looking for something bad to happen yesterday to justify his article, but when (obviously) nothing did turned to alcohol as his subject.

As hilarious as it is that the Star still employs him (it's a very credible newspaper in my opinion), he still gets tons of articles and in turn traction with soccer-hating people. Completely blows my mind and makes me sick.

Why are there so many negative/gossipy/sensationalist journalists out there just to get TFC?! Is this a problem with the Toronto media, and likewise occurs with the Jays, Leafs, and Raptors?

I'm glad Carver publicly tore into his team. Yesterday was an abject disgrace. Utterly unforgivable.

Kelly's article was just spiteful and stupid.

As for why soccer gets picked on, it's simply because there are organized groups, so there's an easy target.

I still have a sick feeling. I take losses too seriously, especially at home. I am just glad we don't have to wait long to get things back on track. But, I am even worried about next week. Dallas will be even more desperate than us.

The Star's credibility on sports can be questioned when they enter into promotional arrangements with a particular team, several years involved hyping the Raptors and nowadays it's the floundering, massive money-losers formerly known as the Blue Jays.

With the Star's constant coddling lip service, they're now known as the Blown Jays.

Sports editor Mike Simpson is a baseball fan from Stratford, but even a bit of a hypocrite in that regard. He deigns to write nice, feel-good pieces about the Inter County baseball leage for the Maple Leafs game program yet can't allot the team one iota of coverage in the paper.

Under his reign of unrelenting negativity, criticism and bitterness, you wonder why the paper bothers to cover sport at all.

Reading Kelly's whibbling article, it sounds like he spent the entire game on the 'front lines' standing alongside the brave members of the 'Thin Blue Line' that seperate south end fans from the rest of the world.

You wonder if he's so desperate to be at the centre of a storm that he'd be down there hoping his goofy glasses would get him recognized, verbally abused and eventually the target for tossed beer cups so he could take this pathetic story line to another level. Don't let that happen, it's a terrible waste of good beer.

Bear in mind, the Star was consistently vocal in its opposition to the building of BMO Field and the subsequent operational rights of the stadium to MLSE after they were awarded an MLS franchise.

Now that the team is beginning its third year of unprecedented success, and MLS is prospering and expanding in the hardest of times, it must be hard for a once-proud shaper of public opinion to accept its growing irrelevancy.

Cathal is a hack for sure, but was anything he wrote today that untrue? The use of the word firm seemed totally uncalled for. A firm is a goup of hooligans. And I don't think any of the supporters groups meet this criteria. I'm tempted to file a complaint with the press council about that one.

And he keeps talking about these "new" rules on streamers? Uh ... are these the "new" rules on streamers that came out in 2007??????

Good morning boys & girls,

Just wanted to see how you all were feeling this morning- me? I'm fine, thanks for asking. The sun's out here in Seattle and the Rave Green stand atop the the table, all's right with the world.

Just wanted you boys to keep your chin up, you seem like a lively bunch and some of your fair weather fans abandoned you in the second half. Honestly I would have loved a draw had you asked me before the game, I was nervous about the environment and how you boys do it up there. I thought you guys brought the environment in the first half, the Reds didn't reciprocate on the pitch, though.

Cheers, we'll see you boys in August, come on out, we'll put on a show for ya!

Here's the comment I left on the Star article. For those who haven't seen the print edition, it was on the front page, above the fold!

A headline chasing a story? Note that no players or coaches provide comment (despite their unwavering support for the support groups). Their statements are publicly available, I'd suggest checking them out. How about comments from the league, who've said repeatedly that TFC is the model for a successful franchise, in part to our 'atmosphere.' How about including comments from the new Seattle Franchise, that stated pretty clearly that we're the model to beat? Not even comments from the support groups themselves, despite painting them all of with the same brush. Their missions statements are also freely available. Of course people get carried away, but that is true of anywhere alcohol is served.

I fucking furious about the Cathal Kelly article. How is such a hack piece of journalism given front page coverage?

This was a great article ... Definitely has a point when it came to Seattle settling in and taking advantage of the weather conditions better than ourselves.

Cheeky bastard :)

Yesterday's second half was more displeasure at our team for not showing up. Losing, provided the team gets stuck in, I can live with. Yesterday was a jagged pill to swallow. And such is football. You lot are enjoying a good run, results don't lie and you deserve it. We'll bounce back, but today is a day for much venting.

Well said Jonathon and the only good article with anything insightful in it was the one regarding the weather and what might have happened had we practiced in the real weather as seattle did. HHMMM i wonder if TFC will be working in the cold outside from here on out? i hope so.

The coffee is not helping to clear my head and reading this surely confirms the fact that we got pawned.....
Some countries have public executions for a reason, today we should have had one..

more coffee will be needed.
