Should TFC have cheerleaders? I have seen them at other MLS stadiums and it is fun, it might be a way to get casual fans into the game, who would ever say no to a hot chick shaking her booty.

That is a horrible idea. Other teams employ that gimick, in order to get American fans into the game. We don' have that problem.

No way. Frankly, I don't think anyone should get paid to stand half naked in front of 20000 people. And it's "just not footy".

So .. no thanks. There's other places for that. If I'm at BMO, I'm there to see footy not booty.

Hey, I just coined a new phrase!

I voted "No", but my real vote is "Don't Care". As long as they aren't obtrusive.

I remember a thread here a while ago, talking about MLS team mascots, and what a joke that would be in Europe, until a couple of people pointed out that most EPL Teams actually have mascots. :D

I'd prefer we didn't have cheerleaders, but I wouldn't put up much of a fight about it if we did. Some North American sports conventions are inevitably going to seep into MLS, as much as some want them out forever.

Cheerleaders just aren't needed at Toronto FC matches, simple as that. One of the best things that our club has going for it is that compared to other teams in the league, all the ancillary things like contests, promotions, and other functions are fairly low-key. Sure, we'll have a Pizza-Pizza or Carlsberg competition during halftime, but that's nothing compared to the sort of things you see at a Raptors, Jays, Leafs, or Argos game.

I think the fact that so much focus remains on the game itself is possibly our strongest point.

ya this is how they do it in South America, in countries like Columbia and Brazil. But i believe the cheerleaders only come out at half time and you dont see them at all durring the game. I wouldnt mind if they danced at half time (maybe it could solve are problem of having the stadium half empty at the 45th minute), but dont have the cheerleaders out dancing and saying there stupid cheers all game long like you see in the USA at basketball and Football games.

Doesn't belong at a football match.

If you won't come for the footie, don't come.

I don't think that TFC should have ANY of the other trappings
of North American pro sports during game play. This means
no shots of fans on the scoreboard, no 'kissing cam', no giveaways
like the 'pretzel minute' or the 'season seat holder of the game'.

Just stick to the game. The rest is all fluff.

having said that, if they want to do that shit before the game,
or after the game, I could care less. Just keep it out of the 90 minutes.

Here comes my insighful answer: no.

It just doesn't belong in the world of football.

same can be said about mascots, but clearly there are LOTS of
big international clubs that use both cheerleaders and mascots.

I always take issue when people say that 'traditional clubs don't ____'
when a lot of the most storied and traditional clubs DO use modern gimmicks.

http://d.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/empics/20090314/20/1282573414-soccer-barclays-premier-league-manchester-united-v-liverpool-old-trafford.jpg

^ yes it's lame, but if one of the biggest clubs in the world does it....

http://www.futebolinterior.com.br/imgArtigos/Image/Personalidades/Boquetes/Poster_450.jpg

^ Boca Juniors use very scantily clad cheerleaders, but they are from South America....

for the record, I don't want any of these gimmicks to be use for TFC,
but the idea that 'traditional clubs' don't use them, or that they just
"don't belong in the world of football" is far from the reality.

Mexican League (http://deportes.aol.com/futbol/mexico/galerias/porristas-1)

Argentinean League (http://www.barra-bravas.com.ar/fan.htm)

Isn't the objective of cheerleaders to get your team/fans going? As long as they are in RED and CHEERING for OUR team, why not have them? It gives the lovely women of the GTA a chance to be part of something and possibly help out their futures. As for the people that say it's not part of football, take a look at Jack's post, which by the way is GR8!

You know what...kids will not remember some dumb mascot giving them a t-shirt when they grow up.

Kids will grow up and want to be supporters. Otherwise it becomes something they did as kid that they outgrew over time.

No need to gear anything towards the kids. Keep the core market as is 18-45

i don't think you remember what being a kid is like Jack. i was 6 years old when i went to see my first pro game, and it had a huge effect on my love of the game. I'm not saying we should fall into the trap of catering to kids, but i would certainly like to see more of them doing something for half time than cheerleaders.

and you can't tell me a kid wouldn't remember kicking a ball around in front of thousands of people in a pro stadium.

Yeah, you've got a good point.

My issue was with catering to kids completely, but I don't mind giving them a way to feel more involved. Just don't make them the main focus. And this is from a doting dad of a 4-year-old princess who has me wrapped around her little finger :p

Is there really a problem with 20-something girls in short skirts, smiling, giggling and shaking their booty? Seriously? Guys? Soccer, Hockey, Fishing, Camel Racing, Curling, Competitive Eating, Golf, and Speed Skating could all benefit from cheerleaders.

There isn't anything wrong with appreciating a beatiful woman and speaking as a former competitive cheerleader who ended her career fairly early due to WAY too much pot smoking, cheerleaders just have no place at a football match unless it is American FB, which is barbaric and in my opinion kind of a rediculous sport.

The only purpose having a cheerleading squad at BMO would serve is having eye candy for the massive amount of drooling, drunk, borderline pedophelic pervs that go to the games. This is not to say that you all fall into this category. Also, bringing in a squad would suggest that we need a group of girls, who have probably never watched a game in their lives to get us riled up to cheer for our team.

So for the few that agree that a cheerleading squad would be beneficial to our already sold out stadium, maybe you should go down to the Brass Rail (as was already mentioned) and ask them to put on the game. At least you'd be able to see them up close and personal and if you're lucky you might even get a lap dance.

Roogsy

Who goes to the washroom during the half? I certainly don't. The crowds are too much, the lineups are too long and I wind up back in my seat well after the half has started.

I have more of a problem with the stragglers getting to their seats late than I would with a group of hot chicks dancing at halftime.

I don't get you people sometimes.

The only reason a team will bring in cheerleaders is to squeeze more money out of a sponsor.

The cheerleaders brought to you by, ".....".

Again, I love women, but even at the half what purpose does it serve? They come out do a little dance for 2-3 minutes - usually bad - and then leave. What are they going to do for the rest of the game? Stand by the sidelines. In the end it's pointless.

Just because I don't like cheerleaders doesn't mean I don't like women, nor am less than a man. At least strippers you can interact with them and they can fake an interest in you.

Now get to them to do some work like serving beer, help out with tifos, etc. then we're talking.

The finger point and TFC, TFC would work great. And a brass band at the gates on the way in. One of the best memories of some Argos and Jays games was when the hoopla started before getting into the park, the band playing, the flags waving. The aforementioned party hosts could be at the gate with a soundsystem helping out.

I don't mind as long they're hot (:hump:) and don't do their dances during the game.

Nope.

Ever been to the Raptors? It's like a promoter with ADD threw up all over the building. Dancers/pancers/music/crap/adds/contests/puzzles/giveaways/takeaways/horns/1000,0000,000 other stupid things.

Agreed. Raptors overdue it! Worst is when they play music during the game (especially when the fans are chanting).

That's the NBA. They know their audience.

This really bothered me at the one and only Raptors game I went to...

Had very good TSN tickets (wasn't courtside or anything like that) and was looking forward to seeing the sport from a live perspective - and HEARING it... Players calling plays, the chirping, chatter etc etc - instead all I heard was the background mix from rap tunes...

Anyways... :topic: which is hot chicks, I mean eye candy, I mean cheerleaders...

Carts...

No thank-you. The whole point to cheerleaders is to pump the crowd up and lead the cheer, but the supporters already do that. They would be a distraction more than anything else.

Cheerleaders that know the songs? :scarf: With flares? :flare: And can beat the drum? :drum: While drinking beer? :drinking:

hmm...

We have cheerleaders for some teams in Japan. They only come out during the walkout before the game and between halfs. Not like those stupid cheerleaders in columbus that "try" to have their cheers follow along with the chants...they look silly.

Sorry, I feel strongly about this. I would consider the introduction of cheerleaders to be an insult on par with bringing in racist guidelines for player recruitment.
When you consider how strong women's soccer is in our nation and MLSE has done nothing in the area of providing a pro women's team, it would be so insulting to say "hey TFC is willing to pay women to be scantily clad movers and shakers on the sidelines, but not pay women to play the game".

For that matter, it might be a reflection of how things have changed since the Raptor arrival of 95, but I would trade the Raptor Dance Pak for a WNBA team in a heartbeat.
Women in sport has moved beyond cheerleaders...

Is this seven-year-old poll still active? Is that why the thread keeps getting bumped?

Yeah, that was the issue. I've closed the poll and I'm locking the thread.
